I wish she hadn't. Bullies should not be allowed to win. It just emboldens them.

@Carrotsticks23

If I was a Sussex university student right now I'd be utterly utterly ashamed and embarrassed to be a member of an institution that bullied a woman out of her job for talking about womens rights. Its disgraceful. The absolutely irony of talking about feeling safe on campus whilst simultaneously starting a protest about an individual.

Sussex is supposed to be a Russel group university, what happened to debate? How can you operate as a university if you can't give an opinion? It makes a real mockery of them as a university

Sussex is not Russell Group. They are ranked in top 50 unis.
PeriChristmas · 28/10/2021 20:06

@FrancescaContini

Agree - fuck them. They don’t deserve her integrity. Hell will freeze over before I let my DC go to a university like this.
You know it's the students not the uni right?
MarshmallowSwede · 28/10/2021 20:07

The only bright side is that many people will see just how ridiculous all this is being held hostage by the tra lobby.

PeriChristmas · 28/10/2021 20:07

@ArtemesiaK

💚 Proff Rob

Yes, yes, but he's male.
TyrannosaurusRights · 28/10/2021 20:24

@PeriChristmas the students not the uni? Oh if only the poor uni had some policy on the topic of appropriate behaviour and a related disciplinary procedure for students

Being "in the top 50" basically means 46th - 50th. Otherwise you:d be in the top 45 or whatever.

And I for one am glad Doc Stock has shaken the dust of that place off her feet and I hope her career trajectory is meteoric from here on.

I have her book - bought it after hearing her speak on R4 - and I've read it and what's more, I can confidently state she is no transphobe but a very compassionate and respectful human being.

This is Sussex's loss. What academic worthy of the name will want to work there now?

Datun · 28/10/2021 20:28

Fucking hell. It's 2021 and a woman has been hounded out of her job because she says sex is real?

prudencepuffin · 28/10/2021 20:29

Tyrannosaurus - thanks for the link - I note it is a disciplinary offence for a student to:
"Cause actual or potential stress or harm to others"
WTF - what else could you call this?

littleburn · 28/10/2021 20:30

I hope she sues the arse off them for constructive dismissal.

NoToast · 28/10/2021 20:31

@Blessex. Did you say Red? I'll be right there (and bring one of my own and the Tyrell's).

I'm sorry you're sad but I truly think the signs are there that opinion has shifted. It's not the end: the fracture lines are still there and bitter for sure, but things have changed.

meadowbleu · 28/10/2021 20:31

@Carrotsticks23 I wholeheartedly agree.

Is it opposites day? Wtf when did they do this?!
the University of Sussex has vigorously and unequivocally defended her right to exercise her academic freedom and lawful freedom of speech, free from bullying and harassment of any kind.

Carrotsticks23 · 28/10/2021 20:45

I thought it was a Russel group! Either way it's supposed to be a good university, it's around 20th in most rankings. They are supposed to be intelligent students, they don't have to agree but how can you operate as a university, particularly a philosophy department, if you can't have differing opinions?

Blessex · 28/10/2021 20:45

@NoToast yep tonight we will need 2 bottles of red, a mound of Tyrells and then tomorrow morning we would dust ourselves down and start the resistance again!

ButtonSister · 28/10/2021 20:50
@buttonsister buy it from anywhere. You can order online from Hive and that works with local bookshops. Postage is free.
Ideally I'd like to buy from somewhere that supports/promotes women's rights, I do generally use Hive in preference to Amazon, but if there is another seller actively supporting women's rights I'd go with them.

PermanentTemporary · 28/10/2021 21:01

I hope she has made a ton of money from Material Girls and has got a spectacular job somewhere else, another country out of the Anglosphere.

Surely it has to be Tunnocks and not Tyrell's

NotBadConsidering · 28/10/2021 21:17

And people say cancel culture doesn’t exist Angry

SpringCrocus · 28/10/2021 21:18

I have huge sympathy for Doc Stock.
I hope she sues the asses off SU.

NoToast · 28/10/2021 21:23

With appreciation and respect then, we need a session in the Bluestocking in honour of Kathleen with much Tunnock's and Tyrell's.

I really hope she's ok.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 28/10/2021 21:36

Kathleen Stock has been incredibly courageous as she's endured this torrent of bigotry.
If anyone wants to feel a bit better, just take a look at the many many hundreds of comments under the article in the Times. Men and woman universally expressing support for her and horror at how she's been treated:

Now who will they target next now that they know the authorities will do nothing to stop them?

nauticant · 28/10/2021 22:07

This is a lead story on The World Tonight on Radio 4. That's one of the more hard news programmes on the channel. For some reason the story didn't get picked up on the Today programme at 5pm, presented by Evan Davis.
