I wish she hadn't. Bullies should not be allowed to win. It just emboldens them.

@MargaritaPie, it would be great if you understood what 'constructive dismissal' actually meant.

It would be bloody fantastic if you would open your eyes and accept that people who disagree with you have a right to free speech, and that holding screeching demos and hounding someone isn't 'raising concerns' but is outright bullying. Wasn't she advised to bring security to campus?

Honestly, I don't know why I bother to engage with you.

How? She left entirely on her own accord

Oh good grief- what do you think "constructive dismissal" means?

It means the employer has created, or failed to deal with a, situation in the workplace which is so toxic that it becomes intolerable to the point an employee can no longer continue in that workplace.

I thought of constructive dismissal too.

viques · 28/10/2021 23:28

I am sorry to hear this, but completely understand why she has resigned, why the hell should anyone put themselves through hell to try to educate ignorant spiteful bullies and ultimately make their lives better. Their education will be the poorer because their thinking won’t be challenged.

I only hope that in ten years time when this crap has flowed under the bridge those entitled farts are mature enough to reflect on their actions and realise how appalling their behaviour has been.

I would like to thank the students and staff of Sussex University who spoke up and raised concerns regarding her views and her association with the controversial LGB Alliance.

More gaslighting shit from you.

Is there any situation where you don’t think that women deserve whatever abuse and bullying they get?

morningtoncrescent62 · 29/10/2021 00:03

Kathleen's resignation does indeed send all sorts of terrible messages about how you can bully someone out of their job. But that's no reflection on her. She's been through sustained attacks on her since 2018, and that's just what's in the public domain - there's probably lots more we don't know about. Through all of them she's remained calm and dignified. I can't begin to imagine the toll it must have taken on her, and I wish her nothing but good things. Shame on everyone who had a part to play - the students and colleagues who attacked her, the managers who did nothing to stop the harassment apart from issue a statement far, far too late, UCU who sided with bullies, and senior colleagues who could have spoken up but didn't (no blame for the junior colleagues on temporary contracts who've been cowed into silence). Some worrying implications, though, for the rest of the sector.

@Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet

Really hope the BBC cover this - they have done stories on Kathleen recently. It would be great for the general public to see how a female academic has been hounded out of her job by a bunch of aggressive and intimidating students.

'Most marginalised' my absolute arse.

Sending strength to Kathleen, I hope she is OK.Flowers

There was an interview with Selina Todd on the World Tonight.

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0010xq2

There's an interview with Peter Tatchell at about 10 minutes, followed by Selina. I got the impression from that interview that there won't be a constructive dismissal claim but that what she (KS) felt most strongly about was the lack of support from colleagues. She'll be making a statement in a few days so we will know more then.

nettie434 · 29/10/2021 00:42

Bother - I was going through the thread and answered the Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet post only to go back to the thread and find that Nauticant had already posted the link. Ah well. Worth saying it was a good interview with Selina twice though!

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 29/10/2021 00:58

The university is a disgrace, as is her union. I hope she sues for constructive dismissal, and gets a role as an expert commentator in the mainstream media.

MenoMom · 29/10/2021 01:42

very sad to read this, but fully understand why she's taken this step - it must have all been so exhausting. hope she got a decent pay-off, the least the university should after letting her down so badly.

MargaritaPie · 29/10/2021 01:45

The University were on her side. They gave statements in her support and made it clear that any protesting which crossed the line into bullying or harassment is unacceptable. I don't know what else the Uni could have done and I don't see any grounds for a lawsuit.

I think this whole situation will backfire on the TRAs.
Rhannion · 29/10/2021 01:47

And on universities all over the UK. Who the hell would want to teach a bunch of ungrateful, ignorant sods?

Nonsense and you know it.
MargaritaPie · 29/10/2021 01:49

"a female academic has been hounded out of her job by a bunch of aggressive and intimidating students"

Or "a professor affiliated with the LGB-Alliance caused so much concern amongst students many protests and complaints were made"

How one chooses to put things into words does make a difference in how it comes across.

Rhannion · 29/10/2021 01:52

The university had a duty of care to Kathleen as did her union and both failed her. She can leave with her head held high, her integrity intact and hopefully move on to better things.

She has the right to associate herself with any gay & lesbian rights group. She also has the right, as do the rest of us to say that trans women are trans women and trans men are trans men, nothing less or more.
MargaritaPie · 29/10/2021 01:56

This is the statement given by the Instagram page if anyone's interested in hearing the students' views on this.

Indeed, and you have a habit of using words to create utter nonsense. I can see you've found a new target for your shit-posting after the MM case has been discontinued.

Rhannion · 29/10/2021 01:57

So the words we use and how we use them do matter after all ?

MargaritaPie · 29/10/2021 01:59

"She has the right to associate herself with any gay & lesbian rights group"

That's correct she does, and if she's a Uni professor then students also have the right to speak up, protest and complain if they have any concerns.

As expected, the balaclavaed bullies sound as thick as pigshit. What a waste of an education. And taxpayers’ money. To think that people are working minimum wage to keep these spoilt little fascists in university where their intention is not to learn, but to demand that their Professors think like they do.

I , for one, can’t be arsed to read the utterly ridiculous word salad they no doubt have come out with, so I’ll just get back to reading the excellent book The Radium Girls by Kate Moore about a group of strong, brave women who wouldn’t wheest just like Marion, Kathleen, Lisa, Ceri and many others. 💪

Thanks for posting it.

I was very interested in hearing their views and had hoped that there might be some small steps towards self awareness of badly this campaign against a lesbian academic has backfired.

I'm sadly disappointed and left questioning what you think posting this diatribe of hateful nonsense (that would not be out of place in a 70's comedic skit) will achieve?

Frankly it's exactly what we GC women hope the lurkers get to witness.

BreadInCaptivity · 29/10/2021 03:24

It's hard to read on IG so photo attached that you can hopefully read.

If not see below for a taster extract.

I'm assuming the spelling might reference a preference for the American "z" than English "s" or maybe just an inability to geolocate one's spellchecker.

"We have organized as a network of autonomous actors - and it is due to our anonymity, plurality of tactics and decentralized structure that we have succeeded.

Fuck the national press media who happily collaborated with the university and Stock to turn this into a debate about 'free speech' and 'academic freedoms'.

I hope some bastard at some tory rag
has to sift through this for quotes and correct our spelling mistakes.

For those reaching out to this account, we will not speak to the press because we will never debate, discuss or organize on the terms of the people who have enabled discrimination and transphobia.

This has been a campaign to get Stock out of Sussex, for the sake of the safety and protection of trans and non-binary students. And it fucking worked. Direct action gets the goods"
