FFS, Murdo Fraser read and liked Helen Joyce, now Boris is doing something decent...

Gncq · 21/10/2021 17:33

Well, that's something I suppose.

The UK has a prime minister who despite being a (insert chosen derogatory term) and has _ (insert long list of examples of total ineptitude and disaster), does understand the basic tenets of living in a pluralistic society.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 21/10/2021 17:36

Well, well, well.

I would dearly love to have been a fly on the wall at number 10

StillWeRise · 21/10/2021 17:37

hmm
this man is outside my 'even a broken clock..,' parameters

Helleofabore · 21/10/2021 17:39

As usual, thank you for the share token igneo.

ArabellaScott · 21/10/2021 17:43

Okay, then.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 21/10/2021 17:44

As I've said elsewhere, I'm expecting a clarification or a leak from Carrie's allies.

Carrie Johnson, the prime minister’s wife, delivered a speech at a rival event hosted by the LGBT+ Conservatives in partnership with Stonewall, where campaigners attacked the decision to allow the LGB Alliance to set up a stall at the conference. They argued that “trans people’s rights to exist is not a topic that is up for discussion”.

I could not be more pleased if I were to proved wrong. The more time that elapses for Margaret Atwood, the more pleased that I am for my expectation to have been wrong for her as I thought she'd walk it back/apologise/pledge herself to re-education within 24 hours.

The other thing that I would be delighted to be wrong about would be the continued use of the argument that anyone is questioning anyone's rights to exist - that has been a gratuitous rhetorical device and abhorrent frame for a very long time.

DraintheBlood · 21/10/2021 17:57

Bj is not quite as dense as everyone believes him to be. He can do math and realises what might secure votes. Of course if that involved saying he would suck a tw cock he would say that. But the math shows it doesn’t.

*I should add the disclaimer that bj knows to pay big bucks to people who know math and can tell him what will get him most votes. It maybe optimistic to suggest he can figure this out himself.

** paying out the big bucks to the counting peoples who tell him where he’d get most votes still makes him bigger in the brain than the opposition at present.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 21/10/2021 18:05

Exactly. He knows what is not a vote winner.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 21/10/2021 18:16

I am so pleased to hear this....I know LGB Alliance and Stonewall were both at the recent Tory party conference. I would expect Johnson to support free speech and in speaking out on this, it makes me feel better about the Tories continuing to stand firm against self-id and generally getting the worst stuff rolled back.
I was a bit miffed when he said 'people with endometriosis' with regard to poor David Amess but given the tragedy not appropriate for me to put on a thread.

DismantledKing · 21/10/2021 18:18

Even a stopped clock…

MrsOvertonsWindow · 21/10/2021 18:28

This represents the massive sea change in public opinion in recent months. I've sometimes thought that women don't have to do much more than shed sunlight on the extreme demands from so many adherents of this ideology. Not just the batshit demands but the levels of anti democratic, anti safeguarding demands along with the continual bullying of women. The Nolan podcasts are a perfect example of how once you uncover what's underneath it's evident to most people that the demands are not compatible with a democratic society.
This is chickens coming home to roost.

Lottapianos · 21/10/2021 18:32

One of the things I hate most about this whole debate is having to side with people like Nick Ferrari, Carole Malone, and now Boris fucking Johnson. Ugh

Bouledeneige · 21/10/2021 18:37

It's hardly surprising. The Conservative party are engaged in a 'culture war' against woke politics and in favour of populism. Much like Trump. It makes for uncomfortable allyship - there are many other aspects of the anti-woke agenda that I would be very opposed to.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/10/2021 18:40

I don't think it's too surprising that BJ is in favour of free speech is it?

The last sentence of that piece though... They argued that “trans people’s rights to exist is not a topic that is up for discussion”.

Too right. It literally isn't - afaik there is no discussion on that topic because no-one disputes trans people's right to exist. Such a disingenuous slur on LGBA to imply that's what they think.

DraintheBlood · 21/10/2021 18:41

Why do you have to side with them?

This is the problem with tribalism. It becomes about whose side you are on, rather than looking at the issues and deciding based on viewing facts with unbiased eyes. No one wants to be in the looser club so they keep denying reality so they can hang with the cool kids.

I’d be willing to bet there’s a fuck tone of posters on here I’d hold vastly different views on other issues from. Plenty I doubt I’d even like in rl. I’m very anti social and introverted. It’s not personal, I just won’t like you ; ) I’d rather be on an island on my own than anybodies bloody side.

None of that changes how much I agree on this one or saying so.

Yes, in my mind the cries of "you don't want us to exist" is typical teenage hyperbole.

RepentMotherfucker · 21/10/2021 18:51

You can say what you like about Boris but, 'that man doesn't know which way the wind is blowing' probably isn't a criticism he hears much.

Pay attention Kier. The wrond side of history is coming for you...

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/10/2021 18:56

What a topsy turvy world we live in.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 21/10/2021 18:57

@DismantledKing

Even a stopped clock…
It shouldn't have taken this long. Other Tory Ministers have expressed concerns about the threat to free speech in Universities and there is talk of tightening laws. But who will enforce them? Lots of (women) academics have been suffering abuse and intimidation for so long. Students need to learn that their right to hold a different viewpoint does not allow them to intimidate and bully. Why should the taxpayer fund students to hurl abuse at academics?
Mollyollydolly · 21/10/2021 19:03

Good it gives them legitimacy against the lunatics. The fox batterer will be on blood pressure tablets.

AnyOldPrion · 21/10/2021 19:08

My jaw hit the ground when I read the thread title. I was not expecting that. I am no fan of Johnson, but this is confirmation that this has now become mainstream. Sunlight everywhere. I fear that the other parties might somehow still stay on that treadmill, because falling off is going to hurt, but sooner or later, it’s going to happen.

I couldn’t agree more. And Julia Hartley-Brewer. Ugh. And yet here we are 😒
JuneOsborne · 21/10/2021 19:10

I don't know if it is all about votes and being calculated. I think he knows it's all ridiculous and is simply saying as much. It's often the Conservative way to be dismissive of anything 'beneath' them and that's what he's doing here.

'Yes, yes, let the minority shout and stamp, but the reality is that this is a storm in a teacup'. Most often, that dismissive attitude is about things we hate, but when it comes to this stuff, I think it's the right tack.
