She says:

I’m taking the OU to court for failing to protect me from being harassed for gender critical beliefs. We need to stop this happening to any other academics.

Hello, Jo. You deserve every ounce of support that's rightly coming your way.

Leafstamp · 18/10/2021 17:17

@ProfJoPhoenix

Hello gardeners.

It's been such a hard couple of days and reading your comments and watching the crowdjustice fund go up has been thrilling, supportive, terrifying and overwhelming. So many women are giving less than £25 and apologising for the small amount. It's made me realise what a tremendous honour and duty I have to make sure we win. This is not for me - let's face it I am at the end of my career and there are no more glittering prizes to be had because I have had them all. But equally, the university can take nothing from me. The last two years of my life - ever since I spoke out against Stonewall and for single sex exemptions (which are perfectly lawful!) to be applied in prisons I have been hounded by academic colleagues. Not students. Colleagues. The University of Essex unlawfully blacklisted me. My colleagues at the OU got on the bandwagon. Once I and colleagues launched the Open University Gender Critical Network (THANK YOU MAYA), it was open season.

I have survived much in my life. The harassment brought me to my knees earlier this summer. But, I am standing up, proud and ready to fight - and HELD by all of you. Your show of support has given me such strength.

So, this will be the hill I die on. Nothing will stop me now - I believe in professional responsibilities and ethics. I believe in academic freedom. And, I am gender critical and hope to be among the first academics developing this as a legitimate academic perspective.

Thank you for all the support so far. Imagine the show of force if we smash the goal by the end of the week. The Open University will realise they are not just dealing with 1 professor but with an army.

We need a few more shovel fulls, please and spread the word. And if any of you want to contact me - please do. I'm easily found.

It's truly an honour to support you Jo, thank you for taking the time to pop on here and message.

I'm not an academic, nor indeed employed, so I am in a good position for this to be the hill I will die on too. If you need anything from us here, just shout.

Sending you strength and good wishes

Lovely to hear from you @ProfJoPhoenix I am so glad you are doing this, and have recognised that not everyone might be able to fight this fight so you are fighting for them too. Hold strong. We need some brave voices out there. Some of us can only quietly cheer from the sidelines but we are rooting for reason to prevail at the Tribunal

StandUpStraight · 18/10/2021 18:03

Solidarity, Jo. Am so thankful to you for having the courage - and frankly, the energy - to fight this. I’m so angry, for you and for every woman who faces a mob when she speaks the truth and stands up for the rights of women and girls in the face of an incoherent and basically stupid ideology that has nothing but fear to support it. I’ve absolutely had it. I am ready to march on the streets. Failing that, will dig again tonight.

All of this, and the lift it gives me to watch the total going up and realise the depth and strength of support out there is a wonderful thing.
Bideshi · 18/10/2021 19:38

Dug. Will keep on digging.

This is where I am too. Thank you Jo Flowers (And may I say you have fabulous taste in glasses!)
MsGoodenough · 18/10/2021 20:10

I have just dug. Thank you for doing this Jo.

Grumpyosaurus · 18/10/2021 20:36

Someone else was gardening at exactly the same time as I was.

Leafstamp · 18/10/2021 20:40

I’ve absolutely had it. I am ready to march on the streets.

Me too.

An OU Free Speech Society is being formed for current and former students and staff, in support of Professor Jo Phoenix's right to free expression. To follow or join: www.afaf.org.uk/our-friends/free-speech-at-the-open-university/.

Wildfart · 18/10/2021 22:04

The fund has increased by 23 pounds a minute since opening.

WarmthAndDepth · 18/10/2021 22:36

Thank you, Jo.

ProfJoPhoenix · 19/10/2021 09:49

Morning gardeners. (apologies for cross posting - there is another thread on mumsnet and I want the message out)

54K carrots. FIFTY FOUR THOUSAND! This is so very important. The more carrots we get and the quicker we get them sends a very important message to my employer. It means that they cannot frighten and sweat me out with legal fees as they will know that I have an army of gardeners behind me that will not let that happen.

I know I've been asking daily, but please, please get the message out. As many carrots as we can muster please. Let's smash the target in record time (which is a week). We are so very nearly there.

Please also take time to read the comments. There are old students of mine from 20 years ago supporting me. People from all over the world. All of your wonderful mumsnetters.

I'll pop back again tomorrow with another update.

#DinosaurRoar

Thank you.

I will pop back regularly to give pep talks, but also, genuinely to get to know you and chat with you.

x

I have donated a small amount and will do a larger one on payday.

Yepnothatfeeling · 19/10/2021 10:08

Professor Jo - I have donated and will do so again. I am in awe of your courage - thank you so much for doing this.

McDuffy · 19/10/2021 12:44

Thank you for doing this! You have us all behind you.

Amiwronghere · 19/10/2021 17:11

I know you in real life @ProfJoPhoenix and wish I could publicly support you without risking my career. Thank you so much for your bravery.

Fallingirl · 19/10/2021 17:18

This is worth highlighting:

… The more carrots we get and the quicker we get them sends a very important message to my employer. It means that they cannot frighten and sweat me out with legal fees…

It is horrific that employers can so easily swat employees in that way, but of course something for all of us to be proud of, that it will not happen to women in this fight.

Leafstamp · 19/10/2021 17:37

Controversial, but is it worth tweeting JKR?
