This sounds interesting.

A special ‘Nolan Investigates’ podcast drops tomorrow afternoon on @BBCSounds. An 18 month investigation into the influence of a lobby group on public bodies throughout the UK. More details in the morning

It seems to be about Stonewall.

Anyone know more about it?

There is some chatter about it on Twitter.

twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1448205588253618176?s=21

(Tweet from JCJ says:

Okay, at last, here it is.

The BBC Ulster documentary on the influence of Stonewall on public life in the UK.

Many GC women have been interviewed for this.

Let's take the lid off this thing shall we?

@sashagabadon

I haven’t listened yet but didn’t have high hopes as every time I have heard speak on this issue he has to my mind been firmly in the pro self ID / anti women camp. Wonder what has made him change his mind?

From what was said it sounded like one of the researchers on the team (Thompson?) started digging in and wouldn't let it drop.

So in other words he probably listened to a man he knew rather than immediately take the word of Dr Nic or whoever was on the show before.

I suppose it's also possible that whilst being broadly sympathetic to the issue he's someone who takes a dim view on this sort of underhand lobbying no matter the issue.

I had to google Owen because I had never heard of Owen but now I have seen Owen it's totally opaque to me what sex Owen actually is. I have literally no idea. Hmm

Help me someone? Is it the sex that normally gets shit like being Mayor handed to them if they fancy it or is it the one that gets death threats if they say stuff?

@nauticant

Mayor Owen Hurcum now on making an utter fool of themselves.

How an earth did Nolan and his team get all these people to speak to them in such a revealing way?

I think it's probably to do with what sashagabadon said: I haven’t listened yet but didn’t have high hopes as every time I have heard speak on this issue he has to my mind been firmly in the pro self ID / anti women camp.

If Hurcum and Cohen and others also thought he was on 'their' side, they would have been happy to talk to him, thinking he would present what they said in the most positive (for them) way.

Skipped to the Ofcom episode. This is dynamite.

Ofcom told Stonewall that they were helping LGBT rights by taking action against a local radio station as a presenter had said that they would be uncomfortable with their 6 year old child not changing in a single sex changing room.

Heads should roll.

If that's the reason they decided to unguardedly engage OldCrone, then I would expect all hell to break loose when word spreads about this podcast.

Thanks, I've downloaded this. If no (official?) transcript emerges, I can start on a quick'n'dirty transcript tomorrow.

I'm on episode 3, excellent stuff so far.

My only criticism is that they're not asking what 'living as a woman' actually entails.

(Because I'm almost certainly not doing it right.😉).

Thinking about it, I doubt it was a long con/ hiding his views. More he hadn’t given it that much thought ( like most people) and then the penny dropped whilst investigating? And then realising what a potentially massive story it is like Kids Company and once you see it, you can’t unsee it ( like Kids Company)?

As a fully paid up not self identifying deaf woman I would be thrilled and grateful if anyone could do a transcript.

That makes sense:so could he be the Canary in the coal mine,and other heads might pop over the media parapet now?🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 I fear the hope I'm feeling

We all know that David Bell has a good grasp of the issue and a good ability to explain what he knows but when he's explaining it to a newbie who is actively asking questions ... well, it's quite something.

This doesn't work for everyone and it's not as good as a transcript but do you use Chrome's caption function with podcasts (I find the captions are decent).

I've also been known to turn on the 'dictate' function for MS Word and use that to create a transcript (can need a fair amount of work but I'm used to reading transcripts full of errors).

On the BBC?

Late to the thread;

I checked 3 times that was listening to bbc sounds just now.

I'm particularly delighted that children's tv programmes were mentioned.

It's clear the bbc has been slowly distancing themselves from things like mermaids etc.

It explains why there has been a distinct shift, certainly on BBC Radio 4, recently. Justin Fletcher and Emma Barnett in particular have been doing superbly, asking the hard questions.

I just hope Jenni Murray is feeling vindicated.

I very much like the way he keeps saying TRA things to his guests, so that they can demolish them.

Listening to the Hurcum episode - he's talking complete bollox. Constantly hesitating as he has to catch himself to stop saying the words man or woman. It's actually sad as he's so self important and self obsessed but has nothing of any substance to say. Tragic.

I used to chat to Stephen occasionally when he worked at Salford. I'd shake his hand tonight .. dynamite. I'm so delighted to hear this on the BBC.

Ok, this sounds good! Maybe the self-ID comments on Radio 5 a few weeks ago were him not showing his hand till this was ready...

I'm loving listening to Hurcum. It's really illuminating, and just letting Hurcum talk with the occasional gentle prompt is just genius.
