This sounds interesting.

A special ‘Nolan Investigates’ podcast drops tomorrow afternoon on @BBCSounds. An 18 month investigation into the influence of a lobby group on public bodies throughout the UK. More details in the morning

It seems to be about Stonewall.

Anyone know more about it?

There is some chatter about it on Twitter.

twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1448205588253618176?s=21

(Tweet from JCJ says:

Okay, at last, here it is.

The BBC Ulster documentary on the influence of Stonewall on public life in the UK.

Many GC women have been interviewed for this.

Let's take the lid off this thing shall we?

It's Friday night. That's when her arguments become their most potent.

Our student union used to have a 50p cinema ticket deal and half price beer at the bar.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2021 19:08

Thats what student unions should be about Kitten.

Mrsjamin · 15/10/2021 19:12

What I really like about this is that you can totally say "oh I've been listening to a really interesting podcast about stonewall" if the subject comes up and as its a BBC podcast you can totally not sound weird or biased about suggesting it's worth a listen. Ben Cohen and nb mayor expose this dangerous ideology with their own free speech. I've already spoken with someone who works at the BBC about it and they are going to give it a listen.

KittenKong · 15/10/2021 19:12

Oh yes, also very cheap snakebite, oh my...

RightsHoardingRaptor · 15/10/2021 19:34

@Mrsjamin I did exactly that today!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2021 20:13

I had a pint of snakebite a couple of weeks ago . . . it was like a pint of my lost youth!

Snakebite, and draught Guiness were my tipples of choice, depending on my mood.

@buckeejit

Just skimmed the thread & excited to listen to this.

Nolan is a bit of an eye roll figure here in NI but I thought this shows a bit of how backward we are that this is how it's posted by PPNI on Facebook. So many folk here don't even have this on their radar as an issue.

That seems like a toxic-masculinity, homophobic reaction to me. Serious journalists should take on the sort of glory projects that involve guns and danger and drugs and gangs, and probably involve going undercover and having secret meetings in underground car parks and handing over suitcases of used banknotes. Not chatting to non-binary persons about how dyeing their hair makes them special. We should be kind to the gays, because... y'know. Punching down, lads.

The commentaries in response are interesting.

I can open the paper but not access any comments, Hadrosaurus. Frustrating!

If you click this:

and then click on the commentary titles, does they not open?

WarriorN · 15/10/2021 21:25

I've just seen "Nob-binary" on twitter, describing episode 4, spelling mistake but apt!

WarriorN · 15/10/2021 21:28

Sorry, inappropriate cross post.

It was in relation to the mayor.

WarriorN · 15/10/2021 21:36

Last tweet (but a few) by Sally Hines on the matter. After only tweeting about KS for a few days.

This is what I hope is my last tweet on what has happened at Sussex. This is not only about Sussex and it’s not just about an individual. The particular academic at Sussex is no worse or no better than certain other academics elsewhere.

(Not last tweet. Don't really get what she's actually trying to say. Probably a lot of academics are transphobes.)

ResistersScot: Just make it your last tweet, Sally. Ever. Go and get some chips.

@Mrsjamin

I don't know whether it makes me proud that we on mumsnet have been talking about this issue for years (I know it's been 5 and a half years for me) or whether it is just thoroughly depressing that it has taken so long, too long, for other people to take this seriously So many children have been through gender affirming treatment in that time 😔. We're now at a point when males are in women's prisons and women's sentences are lengthened if they misgender them. 😕 How long before this podcast really gets the exposure it deserves?
I hear ya. It's a mixture of pride, solidarity, depression and irritation!
Mrsjamin · 15/10/2021 21:58

Sorry but Grin at nob-binary

Lurker for years with NI ties. Never posted before, have just been reading and learning. Often with my mouth hanging open. Have learned so much from you wonderful women, thank you. Also have been quietly digging and supporting for years in service to my children.

Glad to see some voices from NI, it often feels like I'm shouting into the wind when I bring up any of the strands of this issue with NI locals or with ROI folk. Praying the tide is turning and am sharing this podcast as far as I can.

Helleofabore · 15/10/2021 23:08

I am just listening to Hayton and Hurcum’s interview. It strikes me that I am hearing the exact arguments we heard for transitioning teenagers we have heard from posters over the past years. And those arguments don’t sound any more plausible now than they have in the past.

So much of it is bollocks. The ‘it is completely harmless and reversible’ always, always ignores female health risks. Every. Time.

And the mayor takes umbrage at Debbie Hayton’s discussing sex, by conflating gender with sex.

Never does the mayor ever indicate they have any idea about women or girls. It really is like they have never read anything that they consider ‘unsafe’.

I was yelling "safeguarding" at that episode more than once.

Scotland's Civil service deletes the word mother in the maternity policy so that they can rise up the stonewall leaderboard, the Telegraph reports. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/10/15/scotlands-civil-service-deletes-mother-maternity-policy-stonewall/

Blessex · 16/10/2021 06:15

What really upsets me is how many MPs (including the deputy leader of Labour) are running to Twitter to defend Stonewall. They clearly have NOT listened to the podcast. I mean how depressing is that? They can have a view without listening to something the whole country is now starting to listen to. The brainwashing is palpable. I mean how many deleted tweets will happen on Monday after a weekend of listening.

What is heartening are the replies their tweets are receiving.

The other depressing thing is how quick they are to defend Stonewall and how none of them have defended women like Kathleen Stock.

I won’t forget this Angela Raynor. Or even Jess Philips who DELETED a tweet with a favourable guardian article.

How brave is Rosie Duffield.

WarriorN · 16/10/2021 07:29

I've noticed exactly this.

Those defending stonewall haven't listened.

Was going through the QTs of stonewall's statement, none of them have listened!

Started replying with "did you listen? Especially episode 5? Why not?"

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2021 07:36

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus

Thank you - dunnit!

It was me being an idiot! Confused

I don’t understand how they leap to defend Stonewall without listening to the podcast first? Surely you’d be a bit interested to hear what the journalists have found before you swear your allegiance? Why does Stonewall have such a strong hold over them?
Helleofabore · 16/10/2021 08:43

I think Nolan has been quite balanced in that he is pulling up Malcolm Clark using language such as ‘cult’ etc. He is allowing trans people (Hocum) is under that umbrella and allies such as Cohen to have lots of time to discuss.

The fact that their answers lack merit is not being pushed except when they come back to them in later episodes. It is being left to listeners to understand the complete lack of coherency with some mild direction from the presenters.

I haven’t yet had time to look at the responses on twitter, but I can imagine the negative responses will not win anyone’s heart who is genuinely querying what is happening.
