Unfuckingbelievable. Complaint sent - might as well just call us cunts and have done with it.

colouringindoors · 25/09/2021 10:03

@Flowers500

Still, really happy now to say my pronouns. You can call me "body with vagina" if you insist on asking
I've been wondering where this leaves all the people who've adopted pronouns in their email sigs for NICE and the various flavours of the NHS.

Will all the self-abnegating she/her adopters now realise that that is far too triggering and put body/vagina? Or is the latter triggering? Is it nemo/nemo?

Are we now just bodies with vaginas to NICE, the NHS, and medical journals?

@Babdoc

I’m a retired doctor, and have emailed Richard Horton in a fury. That my own profession apparently buys into this misogynistic cult nonsense is shocking and disgraceful. I can only hope this is down to some young woke idiot running the Twitter feed, rather than a wholesale sellout by the editorial board, but these days, sadly, anything is possible.
Sadly not just a woke idiot on twitter this time.

It's on the front cover of the current issue and the phrase is a quote from an article by Sophia Davis who is a senior editor.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/09/2021 10:08

They did not submit the paper to a rigorous enough review, published it and then took ages to retract it. In the mean time the damage was done, and we are still suffering the effects today.

I'm too angry to look. Have they used the open review process, do we know who the reviewers for this were?

NotBadConsidering · 25/09/2021 10:10

I’ve read the full article in question. The word women/woman/girls is mentioned 6 times. There is one “menstruators” and one “people”. And there is one “bodies with vaginas”. It reads like someone who is trying really hard not to use the word women, and I should know, because it’s like posts of mine when I’m trying not to use incorrect sex pronouns on here 😆.

Having read it, I think it’s a deliberate editorial decision to go with that statement on the front page, presumably knowing the reaction they would get. Which makes it worse I think. They could have chosen, for example:

The silence, shame, and stigma surrounding menstruation are increasingly being challenged from various cultural domains

But they didn’t. Shameful.

Tibtom · 25/09/2021 10:14

Who owns the lancet? Shouldn't we be complaining to them?

Itsinthetreesitscoming · 25/09/2021 10:18

Do they have a board of directors?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/09/2021 10:20

Seen in a QT: Why don’t people trust science, scientists, peer review and data like they used to do in earlier eras as our most reliable source of ground truth? We’re in a life and death pandemic after all!

I don’t know. Let me think about that.

I wonder if Sex Matters will write a letter?

So reducing people to their genitals is fine when referring to women but not trans women?

I think the RELX Group, Bill Gates Foundation has some link.
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/09/2021 10:49

I've emailed the Body with a Scrotum. I was ever so polite, if a bit sarcastic.

I signed off with:

Body with a Vagina Adult Human Female.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 25/09/2021 10:51

My email to Richard Horton is unable to be delivered despite numerous retries

I wonder if his inbox is a tad full today…..

Youve got it. Then everyone is just obsessed with genitals. It’s all we think about apparently.
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/09/2021 10:53

Mine hasn't bounced - not yet, anyway.

I'm fucking furious. Even my middling-woke DD was Shock at this.

FannyCann · 25/09/2021 11:08

The IT departments will have to get busy.
Plenty of places where one is given a choice of just m/f for sex (which is still used on some forms) or gender.
Now will it be: male/person with a vagina
Or if they decide they must be equal go for:
person with a penis/person with a vagina
Or as the medical profession loves acronyms:
PWP/PWV

or just go for:
Penis/P and Vagina/V

One can only imagine the management meetings that this will entail...

We really need Ricky Gervais to do an updated Woke Special Woman Erasing version of the Office.

The info for many maternity units manage to avoid the word woman completely.

Bodies is now trending on Twitter, most ferociously Grin

I've started a separate thread on the topic but I'm curious if your DD is a pronoun declarer? If so, does this give her pause for thought?
Helen8220 · 25/09/2021 11:48

It’s a shame they decided to focus on that quote, as they must have known the reaction it would get. As a pp said, the article itself uses the words ‘girls’ and ‘women’ several times. In fact the paragraph the quote comes from says this:

“Historically, the anatomy and physiology of bodies with vaginas have been neglected—for example, the paucity in understanding of endometriosis and the way women's pain has been seen as more likely to have an emotional or psychological cause, a hangover from centuries of theorising about hysteria. This exhibition and the Vagina Museum as a whole aim to redress this lack of attention.”

I think the reason for the phrasing of the quote is that it comes in the context of a discussion about the exhibition “Periods: A Brief History” at the Vagina Museum.

Toldya · 25/09/2021 11:48

These changes/modifications to language will never stop so we all might as well just get used to it and stop complaining, it’s merely political correctness doing what political correctness does. Political correctness is a principle, not a goal with a fixed end point that goes away once it’s end goal has been achieved.

Complaining about political correctness didn’t stop it when the daily mail and their readers constantly objected to PC culture in the 1990’s and early 2000’s so I can’t see mumsnet stoping it now. Most feminists wanted political correctness anyway.

People trying to stop political correctness will just be sneered at and called bigots in exactly the same way as left wing feminists sneered at daily mail readers in the past.

NotBadConsidering · 25/09/2021 11:53

This is the ideology you’re always advocating for Helen so I don’t know why you think it’s a shame.

Whatamesssss · 25/09/2021 11:53

This isn't political correctness. If it was they would never use the word man. It is all directed at women.

So why use the word men then ?

As lancet did

Is it only women who don’t get the word women used
