Sorry, this is the link - somehow the one I thought I copied goes to Skimlinks whatever that is. Hmm

Someone here suggested Dr Rant might be interested. They're not. The line is 'it was a poor choice of words and the editor has apologised'.
Hollow laughs all round

Well, the first part of that is true.
FannyCann · 28/09/2021 15:06

Just to clarify, as departments/divisions expand their remit, the renaming of the "Women's Directorate" to "Family and Specialist Services" may be entirely innocent and appropriate since it encompasses paediatrics and sexual health.
It's just that living in the times we do one is inevitably suspicious. And the fact is that searching the hospital A-Z there is nothing under Women. Looking under Family wouldn't be the first thought for many or most people, I was confused and not sure if I would find what I was looking for as I clicked on Family and Specialist Services. I just wonder how widespread this is and if it is user friendly for most women.

Motorina · 28/09/2021 15:15

As a single woman, it would never occur to me to look under 'Family and...'. Just wouldn't. I might look under 'sexual health' or 'gynaecology', depending on what I needed, but 'family...'? Nope. Wouldn't find it.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/09/2021 15:15

It's infuriating as of course once a website is updated there is no easy way to go back and check what was there before.

Does typing the domain name into the Wayback Machine help?

FannyCann · 28/09/2021 15:44

I had no idea a Wayback Machine existed Edge. It sounds rather exciting and very useful. I'd like to go wayback to when everyone knew and agreed what a woman was! Grin
But on a more serious note I'm not sure that is likely to work though I'll take a look when I'm back on WiFi. I was looking at the staff intranet so it wouldn't be in a public domain.

FannyCann · 28/09/2021 15:45

Anyway, apologies if I am derailing.

NewlyGranny · 28/09/2021 16:22

So women become a subset of paediatrics and family? That's us put in our place! Not even people with interesting-to-men bits; just airbrushed into the background. 🙄

Whatever will they do about hospitals that actually have the forbidden word in their actual names, though? People are sure to notice changes there!

FreeBritnee · 28/09/2021 16:38

Just on this tangent I was reading instructions on a medicine packet over the weekend. It said Adults, elderly and children over 12 and then dosage instructions. When did the elderly cease being adults? Also can you imagine how elderly women must feel about all this new language and trying to find their place within the vocabulary that no longer describes them. It must be quite frightening.

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/09/2021 17:36

"Family and Specialist Services" may be entirely innocent and appropriate since it encompasses paediatrics and sexual health.

So general medicine is male, and everything else is Family and Specialist Services. Or have men’s departments also been subsumed into Family and Specialist Services.

Oh, do you have a link @Jaysmith71? I can't quite read that.

Thanks!

Fab letter, that shines some light on some of the broader issues.

IamAporcupine · 29/09/2021 09:55

Apologies if it was mentioned before, I haven't read the thread in the last couple of days - has a letter from academics/medics/scientists/anyone who will be likely to submit a paper to Lancet been written yet?

Or has anyone tried to escalate it to their departments maybe?

I haven't complained yet, but I was hoping to get a crowd rather than a crowd with affiliations etc - is it too late?!

Motorina · 29/09/2021 16:53

I got a reply from the Lancet:

This note is to acknowledge receipt of your e-mail. Given the unusually high volume of correspondence during this pandemic we may not be able to reply to every email.

But we can promise that your email will be read and reflected upon. Thank you for writing to us.

Literally, "You are not important enough for us to bother to reply to you." If it wasn't so awful it would be funny

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 29/09/2021 17:09

I've not even had an acknowledgement.

Might as well not have bothered, given the non-apology on Twitter.

I'll give them a week and then send the body with a penis a follow-up. I'm sure he won't mind me calling him a body with a penis. How could he?

334bu · 29/09/2021 17:35

No acknowledgement here either.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/10/2021 12:56

Having had no reply, I have emailed Dick Horton, Body with a Penis-in-chief at the Lancet a second time, to see if that might shake him out of his tree.

I was very polite. I didn't open with 'Dear Dick (if I may)', though God knows, I was sorely tempted.

And the CDC are following suit now too

That is an absolutely terrific letter.

Anotheruser02 · 05/10/2021 16:19

There is a protest at Lancet HQ Friday at 12pm.

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 05/10/2021 16:44

If I wasn't working on Friday, I would seriously consider going on that protest march. I have never been to a protest before!
