Oh Dick, you are such a weapons-grade arsehole.

ChattyLion · 28/09/2021 03:47

‘regular readers will know..’ aye right. He thinks women don’t read the Lancet regularly.
53% of doctors in training are female

Cailleach1 · 28/09/2021 06:40

Ah, literally a body with a dick then.

Deliriumoftheendless · 28/09/2021 06:45

He thought everyone would say he was so cool with his vagina cover. Like the cool libfems are. He was going to put it on his wall behind his screen for a zoom background
😂 Yes, I bet he was. Also extra points for “manpons” 👌

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/09/2021 07:18

I just feel so bloody powerless. Thousands of people, not just women, complain, and that's the best Dick can do for an apology?

Artichokeleaves · 28/09/2021 07:19

Having read the Twitter response I'm even further depressed that this appears to have been quite deliberate and that Horton is probably gleeful at all the attention and clicks this has generated, and apparently dehumanising women has become something to play with as an advertising strategy.

Which just shows how society now views women: dehumanising and quite intentionally insulting them and enjoying their reaction has become a game rich and powerful men play without the faintest conscience.

Anyone want to talk about the actual meaning of oppressed? And then imagine the uproar and the Worthy Rich and Powerful rushing to shout their virtue signal if someone spoke about any other group this way but women?

Women are fair game. Women are worthless. Women really are now a fucking subclass you play with for clicks.

Artichokeleaves · 28/09/2021 07:25

I will be contacting my MP to point out that Horton is illustrating why less than 5% of rapes end in charges and this country, run largely by men, just goes 'meh'. That endemic violence against women and girls is based on utter, confident and enjoyed disrespect and subordination of women. Why childbirth is such a fucking awful experience for so many women, and no one cares, and women are still fighting against a medical system that doesn't see them as equally human.

This kind of educated, powerful bloke will be the first to whine when women talk about 'male violence' that it's not him, he doesn't do it so don't imply he's got any blood on his hands. And here is the evidence that he has. He has that blood all over his hands, his attitude is no different to any other male who sees women as bodies available to use for their own personal agenda.

Sophoclesthefox · 28/09/2021 08:23

That’s a miserable excuse of a non-pology.

Go to hell, Lancet.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/09/2021 08:25

He probably already has, given that it's the banner heading on the Lancet site currently.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 28/09/2021 08:36

One of the especially maddening thing about this is that last week was the first time that a major US society of cardiologists elected a proportionate number of female officers. Now, there's a long way to go because only 16% of cardiologists are women - but, it's an indicator of how dire things are for women in some areas of medicine that that was progress.

I think it was just over 2 years ago that women anaesthesiologists walked out of a major professional conference because of the dubious content of one of the presenter's slides.

And The Lancet chose to do this.

CinnamonMagic · 28/09/2021 09:58

@Cailleach1

Ah, literally a body with a dick then.
Or a dick with a body.

What a dire response. Man body-with-penisplaining to women bodies-with-vaginas that we should find verbal dismemberment empowering.

Motorina · 28/09/2021 10:41

I note that, if people felt that the editor's choice of cover was sufficiently egregious that it undermined public confidence in the profession or brought the profession into disrepute, then one option is to complain to the GMC.

I, personally, haven't because I don't think the comments are at that level. I think they're awful, but don't reach that level. But they've clearly caused a lot of anger and anxiety so wanted people to be aware that that option exists.

Sod women, because trans.

At least be honest about your rationale.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/09/2021 11:13

I read it as "Enjoy your erasure, inferior bitches". From, Dick.

Fitt · 28/09/2021 11:26

Lancet Dick inserts himself into bodies with vaginas in museum debate.

Arseholes With Mouths Sort Of Apologise To Bodies With Vaginas

Arseholes With Mouths Sort Of Apologise To Bodies With Vaginas
Wins the internet today.

I want that on a headline circulated as far as the Lancet's circulation goes.

ParishSpinster · 28/09/2021 11:40

That apology from the Lancet?

I don't "experience" menstruation. Its not something I have chosen to do. It is a biological function of a female body. It is something that women (asa sex) bodies do.

I am not a menstruator.

I am not a period haver or body with vagina. I am not a person with cervix.

I am a woman.

And I am angry.

I cannot be reduced down to a single biological function in order to dehumanise and decatgeorise me.

Women are being erased. And replaced with holes.

Yeah, 'experience' makes it sound like a bungy jump.

It reminds me of Métaphysique des Tubes by Amélie Nothomb in which she describes humans as nothing more than "shit-cutting machines".

JustcameoutGC · 28/09/2021 12:46

I don't experience menstruation any more than defecation or salivation. It is a biological function. Not a Virgin Experience.

And yes @Jaysmith71, you win the Internet today. Hands down

OldCrone · 28/09/2021 13:32

Baroness Nicholson has written to the body with a penis who edits the Lancet. She's invited him to the HoL for a discussion.

I'm so angry about this I don't know what to do. My husband thinks it's the same as using a racial slur. We're both terrified of where this goes next. My number one priority right now I'd ensuring my TWAW Lib Dem MP looses her seat at the next election. Even if that means working for the Tory candidate. Right I'm off to work out how the Tory party works and whether there's anything I can do for them locally. Funny situation given that I was pretty instrumental in getting the bloody Lib Dem her seat in the first place. I will be atoning for that mistake for years to come.

FannyCann · 28/09/2021 14:04

I have just sent a complaint using my nhs email and fwiw I also copied in the ombudsman whose email is right at the bottom of the link a pp helpfully provided.

I was going to add that hospitals still have Women's Departments and decided to check the A-Z of my hospital to see what language is currently being used. What do you know. The WOMEN's department/services, which I am quite sure was there not so long ago, has disappeared. It is now The Family and Specialist Services Division.
There is no Woman in the A-Z at all!

I'm quite sure it was there earlier in the year as I remember walking in from the car park and finding myself talking to a very pleasant woman who introduced herself as head of women's services and I went and looked in the intranet to check her name.

It's infuriating as of course once a website is updated there is no easy way to go back and check what was there before. So I encourage posters to check their local hospital services and keep a record.

Liverpool does still have a Women's Hospital.

Maybe we need a thread keeping records for women's health provision and language used around this for the sake of posterity?

I have just noticed the latest newsletter says Sept 2019 Hmm I will have a look at that when I get a chance. Maybe the word Woman will still be evident.
