@SnoopyLights I won’t follow anyone who states pronouns in their bios. It’s like a red rag to a bull to me!

OldCrone · 26/09/2021 21:31

Trans men seem to just get on with their own lives.

Not all of them. There are some very influential TRAs amongst transmen. Stephen Whittle has been involved in trying to dismantle women's rights for decades, and Freddie McConnell went to court to try to be named as 'father' rather than mother on Freddie's child's birth certificate. Also James Morton who was responsible for writing transgender prison policy for Scotland which allows male prisoners who identify as transwomen to be housed in women's prisons.

Agreed. Some other less well known ones are among the authors of this report:

@AnnieSnap I feel the same. I make a point of checking now before I follow anyone, and every so often I check those I'm already following to see if they've added them, and if so I unfollow them.

And anything like this, where someone erases the word women from a post clearly about women and girls, or where they will call someone terf or transphobe is also a deal breaker for me now.

AnnieSnap · 26/09/2021 22:20

@SnoopyLights yep, those for me too.

Well that’s bloody depressing. Do you remember the days when trans people just wanted to have respect, be left to live their lives in their lives in peace without harassment? I was always keen to defend them then. Now the extremists have gone so far that their behaviour produces prejudice. I now find myself assuming the worst of a trans person and have to remind myself to take a step back and give them the benefit of the doubt. I have come across two trans women on Twitter who have themselves argued that they are trans women, not women and that there are differences. Of course, they both got lots of abuse from tge extremists.

I’ve written and complained to the editor.

This is the first time I’ve weighed in on word usage. I concentrate on safeguarding for both sexes of children and young people and supporting good practice in schools and outside, and lots of alarming practice used there which demean and don’t safeguard both girls and boys.

However the Lancet have really, really crossed a line. Like others have pointed out, this is an inevitable consequence of perpetuating lies, untruths and wokeness swallowed whole without any critical thinking about the harms caused.

Fitt · 27/09/2021 02:14

I'm running a pay review for a large teaching hospital/uni next month. I always include an equal pay audit.

I'm going to change the male and female column to male and bodies with vaginas and note that the definition source is the Lancet.

Fitt · 27/09/2021 02:15

Actually I will go full hog and put bodies with penises too. There's so many of them.

highame · 27/09/2021 08:27

Sorry, I will catch up later but that Lancet twitter thread has gone. Anyone know anything? They must have had an almighty onslaught

334bu · 27/09/2021 08:46

Post is still up with it's nearly 7 thousand replies highname.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/09/2021 09:07

If they do reply, my be is they'll have some excuse for what it was supposed to convey.

But that misses the point - no one in the chain of people responsible for that cover stopped to think about what women would think about it. No one realised so many of us would hate it, or else they didn't care. They may have been trying to highlight the shameful and unacceptable neglect of women's anatomy and physiology but they've inadvertently demonstrated the callous disregard for women's minds and feelings instead.

Compare and contrast the title of the book by Caroline Criado Perez on the larger issues around the neglect of women's physical reality - 'Invisible Women'.

Statement has been released by The Lancet

So sorry but not sorry then.

That is the epitome of a non apology.

Wankers.

OvaHere · 27/09/2021 20:04

They couldn't even do one whole paragraph of an apology to women and keep it about women.

OvaHere · 27/09/2021 20:09

This basically says 'we're sorry you women got worked up over nothing - here's what you should think'.

SnoopyLights · 27/09/2021 20:13

They claim that quote was part of a review intending to empower women - there's nothing empowering about erasing the very word that describes us.

They also claim they want to address the myths and taboos that surround menstruation - it's a myth that anyone other than women and girls menstruate. It's a taboo to say that only women and girls menstruate - address that!

We are not 'bodies with vaginas' and in this instance we are not 'people with vaginas' - we are WOMEN! Call us women.

Artichokeleaves · 27/09/2021 20:13

It seems that it is now impossible to talk about the female half of the human race without immediately shifting the subject to how very important trans people are. As if the two things cannot coexist.

That's a rather smug telling of women that they are bodies with vaginas, will stay bodies with vaginas and the Lancet hopes there is nothing they can do about it. As with every member of the Labour party to open their mouth today: misogyny on crack.

OvaHere · 27/09/2021 20:17

They appear not to have addressed the fact they continue to use the words man and men unapologetically and it's only woman and women that become verboten.

UnfinishedBunting · 27/09/2021 20:19

Not great quality, but readable.

I'm such an ANNOYED body with a vagina.

What next? Do we need to make a formal complaint?

Yup always this. Can’t mention women without trans people being brought into it.

Does it not piss of trans people cos it fucking pisses me right off

By talking about us in the same way that woman hating incels do Hmm

Creeps.

Lordamighty · 27/09/2021 20:28

Sorry if you were offended by being described as bodies with vaginas but let’s talk about the most important thing which is, trans health care. You really couldn’t make this stuff up.
I hope some investigative reporters are looking into this because none of it makes any sense unless money is involved.

shallIswim · 27/09/2021 20:30

So he's sorry that we're offended. But not sorry for offending us. Classic.
