Women's Wellbeing in Prisons

Apologies if this is a repost as I know how many people in these fora are concerned about the health and well being of women in prison. Since it happened in 2019 I am sure there is a long thread about it but David Lammy rightly brought it to light again this week. pre and ante natal care in prisons is pretty disgusting, its almost as though most people do not care.

People do care, just not here, here it's mainly middle class feminism against gender here, those in prison aren't (mainly) middle class. Gc can raise tens of thousands for men kicked out of a course but can't raise a penny for prison services. The feminism here is quite different, it's just a single issue group.

OldCrone · 23/09/2021 12:18

I remember reading about that at the time. This is one thread from 2019 (there may be others).

What is David Lammy's involvement in this? The BBC article is about a report by the Ombudsman.

sanluca · 23/09/2021 12:28

So this is you and anaily berating women on here for not discussing the right topics in your opinion, OP? And getting a nice sneer in that we are all middle class so don't get a voice.
Don't you ever get tired of yourself?

DefineHappy · 23/09/2021 12:31

The rights and safety of women in prisons is very often a topic of concern on this forum. Of genuine concern and distress, not faux worry or as (supposed) “gotchas”….

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/feminism/4356486-shocking-case-of-young-woman-who-gave-birth-in-prison-bbc-radio-4-today

Already a thread on this on the other feminism board.

teawamutu · 23/09/2021 12:42

One of the resident TRAs is first to post on a post denigrating MNers by another resident TRA.

What are the odds?

It's nearly as predictable as missing the threads where the issue has been discussed. About equally tiresome, too.

Hmm
Franca123 · 23/09/2021 12:44

Disgusted of Manchester as seen in the Times comments?

There is another topic on the Feminism Board in case you weren't aware. HTH
RocketPanda · 23/09/2021 12:55

Women in prison have been discussed extensively on these boards over the years. Particularly the often non violent reasons they are in prison and lack of supports and dignity afforded them as many have disclosed a history of abuse.

This

Its utterly tragic. Women in prison really are the most oppressed without the ability to speak out and without access to basic care.

ArabellaScott · 23/09/2021 12:59

You know what, I started writing a post about this yesterday, but didn't fucking finish it due to a collision of work and childcare and not being very well. I am so angry that you come on here to berate women about what they are doing or failing to do. How dare you!

Im sorry? This is the only place that is sticking up for women in prison. 9well women everywhere really) Oh yeah and you can cut out the white middle class bullshit. Thanks
ArabellaScott · 23/09/2021 13:01

Using this tragedy to beat and berate other women with. I am utterly furious that you think this is acceptable. I am disgusted, OP, funnily enough.

Fariha31 · 23/09/2021 13:02

David Lammy is the MP we can thank for women being locked up with rapists.

ArabellaScott · 23/09/2021 13:04

I'm afraid racism seems to coexist with the misogyny, quite often, Fariha. Posters are of course free to start these threads themselves, or post elsewhere, or to do something constructive, but seems they would rather come and sneer and insult the women on this board, for some reason.

Franca123 · 23/09/2021 13:05

Yep. David Lammy has hands down done the most harm to women in prison. He doesn't get to be a hero now. The story of this poor women has been on my mind since I read the article. It's heart breaking. We desperately need prison reform.

ArabellaScott · 23/09/2021 13:11

Yet from what I read yesterday, they are increasing the numbers of prison places for women, when the best approach would be the complete opposite. That money could be spent on mental health care, which is sorely in need of resources. It's so wrong.

Artichokeleaves · 23/09/2021 13:13

Wrong board, OP. You may want to report and request it is moved to the correct board. Although a duplicate thread.

Do look at the thread Ghostintheshelf linked. You might recognise the names that post here are also posting on that thread in the other section.

You should have looked before jumping in to berate posters here (again).

OneEpisode · 23/09/2021 13:18

The OPs intentions may not be good, but thank you for drawing my attention to this. I can’t afford a daily newspaper and although I’m sure I saw the BBC news and website I didn’t see this. Checking the BBC today, the most watched story is adverse hair dye reactions.
The pregnant woman was a teenager!

You can't spend much time on here if that's what you think as these things come up very regularly in threads!
Alekto · 23/09/2021 13:32

I find the assertion that David Lammy brought this to light hilarious, what a dopey MRA your posts make you look 🤡

Do you imagine the publication of the ombudsman's report and the inquest's response had nothing to with it?

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 23/09/2021 13:36

Bollocks.

My feminist group demonstrated outside our nearby women's prison. Proper old school placarded demo. We heard later that it had really moved and encouraged the prisoners. It's important they know they're not forgotten.

Cerebelle · 23/09/2021 13:46

Our prison system is utterly fucked. It fails women horribly who are, for the most part, imprisoned for non-violent crime.

The feminist analysis covers the different reasons women are jailed, the disproportionate impact on families when mothers are in prison, the almost ubiquitous background of domestic/sexual/childhood abuse imprisoned women have and more. Allowing natal males to enter the female estate only further marginalises this very vulnerable cohort of women.

More widely, we can look at our prison and penal system as a whole to explore the widespread institutional failings that also affect men (and trans people). While feminists can and should focus on women and unique issues like pregnancy while incarcerated, it's likely that their work on prison reform would, if successful, benefit male prisoners as well. Better mental health care, better educational opportunities, better facilities, fewer short sentences, better reintegration services etc. would benefit everyone.

Radical feminists like Julie Bindel have been doing such work for decades. Funny that TRAs like Ash Sarkar enjoy denigrating them while doing fuck all themselves.
