www.scotsman.com/news/crime/marion-millar-scots-woman-appears-in-court-accused-of-sending-homophobic-and-transphobic-tweets-3365741

*"Marion Millar, 50, allegedly behaved in a threatening or abusive manner between October 2020 and June 2021 within the Glasgow area and Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.

Prosecutors state Millar repeatedly posted content on social media that was of a "homophobic and transphobic nature."

It is claimed Millar posted a photograph on social media of a sign where a named Scots actor was working at the time.

The charge alleges Millar disclosed personal information relating to a female police constable on social media.

Millar is further claimed to have communicated on social media about the officer, which contained false information.

The offence is said to have been aggravated by prejudice related to sexual orientation."*

A-ha. So it wasn't all over a "photo of a ribbon" after all.

MargaritaPie · 02/09/2021 13:20

btw isn't there a way to format your post to show quotes? I don't mean quoting previous posters but just blocks of text in general? I use * make it bold but it doesn't always seem to work.

Jaysmith71 · 02/09/2021 13:22

So count one is not the ribbon but the witches with writing on a sheet, which the person named was made to fear in case they turned him into a newt?

MargaritaPie · 02/09/2021 13:31

Why were so many so obsessed with the supposed tweet of a ribbon when this didn't even appear to be relevant to the charges at all?

Youve got to make sure that youre * is right next to the word, any spaces and it doesn’t work

And if its a few small paragraphs or sentences you need to * them all otherwise it doesnt work

Thats the only way of quoting unless you screenshot

I like ribbons and rosettes

It’s still super unclear to me how posting a picture of a sign, or saying something untrue about a police officer is likely to cause offence or alarm let alone how it is homophobic.

Jaysmith71 · 02/09/2021 14:04

Why were so many so obsessed with the supposed tweet of a ribbon when this didn't even appear to be relevant to the charges at all?

It was initially reported shortly after the arrest that the police investigation was into a possible breach of the Malicious Communications Act 2003, s127, concerning what was widely described at the time as something "resembling a noose wrapped round a tree."

Over the intervening period, it looks like the Police and/or COPFS have been looking at this:

www.gov.scot/publications/independent-review-hate-crime-legislation-scotland-final-report/pages/7/

which recommends the alternative offence under the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010

Oh please! You know why.

Said Not-a-Newt originally reported being made fearful by MM posting a picture of a noose near his workplace.

Said Not-a Noose also being known as a loop of ribbon. In suffrage colours

But that wouldn't fly in a court, unlike witches...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/09/2021 16:33

Oh, and the charges were only just made known to MM.

Prior to this all we had to go by was what he has posted across his social media!

Jaysmith71 · 02/09/2021 16:40

I was sceptical of this, but come to think of it, courtrooms have high ceilings, and those Quiddich broomsticks, fashioned by the witch JKR, seem to have a very tight turning circle.

MargaritaPie · 02/09/2021 17:37

"Oh please! You know why. Said Not-a-Newt originally reported being made fearful by MM posting a picture of a noose near his workplace."

Is it factual that one of the complainants actually reported that? Or are we all just going by what Graham Glinner is saying about the trial on his blog?

MargaritaPie · 02/09/2021 17:38

"Prior to this all we had to go by was what he has posted across his social media!"

I've been following [person] on Twitter and haven't seen any mention of MM from him.

Jaysmith71 · 02/09/2021 17:54

First mention of a noose seems to be from The Times man in Scotland, Mike Wade:

So his tweet on the 5th June 2021 is in regard to what?
CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/09/2021 18:06

Well given the coverage, the screenshots, the many retweets etc, I am sure someone will be able to furnish you with the very thing you can't find.

Not me though, I am not on Twitter and they have very recently tightened up what you can see, do without being registered.

But if you think that everyone here who has followed this have made up his SM outpourings you are wrong, and, as I have a vague memory of you posting on one of those earlier threads, disingenuous!

They have!

Its bloomin’ annoying

If you still want to browse Twitter, right click any twitter links and 'open in private window' or go incognito.

It stops the annoying box trying to force you to sign up or log in 😊

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 02/09/2021 21:01

Ooooh ok thankyou

I’ll give that a go

Cailleach1 · 02/09/2021 21:08

Ta for the twitter tip. I opened Chrome, clicked the open incognito mode from the three dots on the right. Bob's your uncle!

CharlieParley · 02/09/2021 22:45

Might be worth trying Twitter again the normal way. It started working for me after a few days. The problem was most likely a coding issue for the mobile site, because the same pop-up also turned up at the bottom of the screen on the computer but because of the size of a computer screen, it did not block me from seeing tweets. Once people notified Twitter, they would have rectified it.

334bu · 03/09/2021 09:30

No still having same problem on my phone. I can only get round it by opening in my safe browser.

NecessaryScene · 03/09/2021 09:35

Blocking all cookies for twitter.com is sufficient, I've found. That's a bit better than private browsing, as history will be retained.

334bu · 03/09/2021 11:50

Thanks for that info necessary.
