In the past I would have considered many transwomen as simply men with an alternative lifestyle and an esoteric style of dress. Particularly around the Edinburgh Fringe. It wouldn't have occurred to me to that I was meant to think of them as women.
It seems to me to be a great shame that the concept of being eccentric, cheerfully tolerated and even sometime admired for their disdain for the conventions of society has been erased. Of course many eccentrics are unconcerned with issues relating to gender but between edicts to #bekind , be non-judgemental etc then the true eccentric doesn't even get to be celebrated any more.
Past eccentrics who may or may not have had gender issues include
Henry Paget, fifth Earl of Anglesey. He may or may not have been homosexual but I tend to agree with the assessment of him as a classic narcissist, unable to love anyone but himself.

The Reverend Robert Hawker reputedly liked to dress up as a mermaid and hated to wear black, choosing colourful clothes. Mourners at his funeral wore purple rather than his hated black.

I think in these don't look, don't stare, don't be judgemental times the true eccentric is wholly unvalidated and invisible. Hard times indeed.
Sorry for the derail
