GC women thrown out of Edinburgh pub

Sorry if there's already a thread on this. I've been following it on twitter all day but didn't spot anything on Mumsnet.

The Edinburgh News has got a report about it.
www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/politics/inquiry-launched-into-row-over-transphobia-in-edinburgh-pub-3355594

The reporter quotes a lot of the TRA's tweets which they would probably love but I think the reporter's just given them enough rope to hang themselves.

I'm sure the average reader who hasn't followed the trans debate won't be impressed by someone who calls themselves an "AGP porn addict male" in their twitter bio.

Trip Advisor has deleted all their recent reviews for the pub and has suspended publishing new reviews.

If anyone has visited Doctors and wants to post a genuine first-hand Google review, that's still ok. Smile

Greene King is also joining lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality charity Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme. Jesse Ashman, client account manager at Stonewall, said: ‘LGBT-inclusive employers play a crucial role in changing society by using their power and influence to proudly support LGBT staff and customers.

Still doesn't mean they can discriminate against people that hold perfectly legal, protected beliefs :)

And being an LGBT ally or whatever doesn't mean it's okay for your barman to refer to women as 'cunts', the t*rf slur, and act downright abusive online whilst dragging his place of work into it...

NecessaryScene · 23/08/2021 11:49

"Just as we want our customers to feel at home in our pubs, we want our people to feel like they can be their true self at work."

...so if any of our staff call the police because they don't like your views, and then call you a cunt on Twitter, please realise that's just their "true self", and as such we wholeheartedly support their self-expression. Flowers

PS Don't you dare try bringing your true self into our pubs, you fucking bitches.

Peace out.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/08/2021 11:53

Have GreeneKing actually replied to any women's Tweets yet?

ArabellaScott · 23/08/2021 11:57

Fiona Robertson, SNP National Equalities Convenor.

Trying to find the tweet where Fiona expresses her sympathy towards the bar manager, perhaps its been deleted.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/08/2021 11:57

I'd assume it was not altered after the event, but for as long as they've been receiving abuse for being trans. 'porn-addled' is something Graham Linehan likes to accuse people of, based on no evidence (and who, incidentally used to very pro-porn until he went bananas).

So this is a long-term decision, on their work connected account, and people are supposed to do what, trawl through search results going back goodness knows how long, to work out if they're quoting a twitter argument in their bio?

I'm not sure that's better than impulsively altering it at 3am this weekend, which is what I thought Sirree was implying had happened.

If I put every misogynistic slur people had called me on social media in my profile, I can't imagine people giving me the benefit of the doubt. I think it would go down like a lead balloon at work.

Me: "it's fiine. I'm just quoting a bloke in 2018. So long as anyone looking me up does their research, they'll know it's just me being self deprecating and ironic"
Boss:...
Boss: "take. it. out"

Here is Fiona describing Dr Jane Clare Jones as a 'transphobe':

A new career beckons for this mebisdead person now that he is ' transitioning ' from bar work. I think he should open a micro brewery selling craft ales to like minded people. Needs a catchy name - I thought 'Cumbrain ' would attract his demographic. Although perhaps 'MacCumbrains 'given the location ?

BilindaB · 23/08/2021 12:00

If you feel you are unfairly being asked to leave a pub, guess what, you still have to leave. If you argue and refuse, the police may well be called.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/08/2021 12:01

'Hey, Grumpy, wanna head down the local Greene King boozer for a swift half?'
Ummm...

When I've seen other people do this, they do it as quotes or screenshot a tweet and use it as a header - much less room for misunderstanding.

But still, I wouldn't even do that if my account was linked to my work, and I certainly wouldn't post endless tweets about my "bewbs" (with photos).

I have to keep reminding myself too that this person is allegedly 40 years old.

Yeah, and guess what else? You can ask someone to leave a pub without calling them a slur that is often accompanied with rape, death, bomb and beating threats, that is used in a way to dehumanise women and justify the most awful threats against them.
cariadlet · 23/08/2021 12:06

This doesn't explicitly support the bar manager, but I guess that's what she's referring to.

twitter.com/FionaSnp/status/1429505795511750659?s=20

I see the most disingenuous people in Scottish politics are either actively lying or are too deep in their fetishism of trans people to understand when a profile bio is using their own slurs as a joke

But you aren't allowed to discriminate against your customers on the grounds of a protected characteristic which includes sex and belief.

I read their bio as entirely accurately reflecting the content of their feed.

Male tick
Porn addled tick
AGP no shit sherlock
Cumbrained wouldn't surprise me

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/08/2021 12:13

Sounds like we needed Fiona on this thread, seeing as she already knew what all these words meant. I certainly had never had occasion to look up "cumbrained" before.

WouldBeGood · 23/08/2021 12:13

I’m scared to after finding out about AGP!

Well somebody is being disingenuous...

As others have said - how are we supposed to know?!

I also think it's pretty unseemly for politics to get involved in spats like this. A bland statement of support/solidarity, sure. But this level of involvement is unprofessional, imo.

ScreamingMeMe · 23/08/2021 12:15

*politicians, not politics

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/08/2021 12:16

Winterfire took one for the team and looked it up at 11am.

It's not a word I envisage using much in the future...

yourhairiswinterfire · 23/08/2021 12:18

It amazes me, the kinds of stuff people will shamelessly side with and support, just so they can be seen to be on the opposite side of meanie GC women...

ArabellaScott · 23/08/2021 12:20

@BilindaB

Perhaps. But if you have been asked to leave a pub because of a protected characteristic, such as, say, 'belief', then the service provider may find themselves in hot water.

Dragonglass · 23/08/2021 12:48

I have no idea what happened in the pub, I wasn't there. But the tweets by the bar manager since are disgusting and very unprofessional. His tweets are what make me think that the women had done nothing wrong. It is him that has acted badly in all this and brought the pub and company into disrepute. If he had acted professionally, this would not have blown up the way it has.

Graham Linehan isn’t bananas ffs! Is it bananas to care about the rights of women and children? If so, then many , many of the women on mumsnet must be bananas
BilindaB · 23/08/2021 13:10

''Perhaps. But if you have been asked to leave a pub because of a protected characteristic, such as, say, 'belief', then the service provider may find themselves in hot water.''

But not if they were disturbing other customers. The pub said they knew their beliefs and they served them for two hours, then things got heated, people had been putting provocative leaflets and stickers about that many other patrons would find offensive, one of them admits she shouted at the bar staff because she was being rude. You may feel someone is being rude, but shouting causes a disturbance that may well get you chucked out of a pub.
