Wow.... So refreshing to read such straightforward, sensible points. She's a brave woman for sticking her head above the parapet.

Does anybody know the best address for sending flowers?

YouMeandtheSpew · 24/08/2021 15:46

Good for her, but I wonder how long she will last.

OhHolyJesus · 24/08/2021 17:44

Not sure of the address for flowers/cards but the email is:

[email protected]

I imagine that the Surrey Pride pile on has already begun. Love that she has a sense of humour though with that screenshot! You don't get to where she is now without developing a thick skin.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2021 17:59

We wish to work with the office of the PCC to educate on the issue of transphobia.

Chilling.

Jaysmith71 · 24/08/2021 18:06

"Often people’s views are based on misinformation and it is part of our remit to assist people within all areas of society in gaining access to the facts...."

My aren't we the lucky ones.

Elephantsparade · 24/08/2021 19:54

How secure do you think that email address is. I voted for this woman even though she was conservative because the other candidates were all middle aged men which wasnt very discerning of me but Im pleased now. I want to thank her for her talking about womens need in womens refuges

OhHolyJesus · 24/08/2021 20:35

It's the official email so would have to abide by data protection laws, so pretty safe Elephant, I'd say.

A Surrey women's refuge has shown their thanks and support. Lovely to see this after the attack from Pride.

www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/womens-refuge-hits-back-pccs-21389631.amp

I was actually looking to donate some money next week as it's pay day so I'll be sending them something.

Signalbox · 24/08/2021 20:54

Nice to see women's services in Surrey supporting this. I will donate too.

Olderbadger1 · 24/08/2021 21:00

Letters, postcards, emailed support all really really important. She is up against a barrage of complaints. She's a significant ally; it would be horrendous if she was forced from office over this.

The email is: [email protected]

Address to send cards to is:
Lisa Townsend
Police and Crime Commissioner
Office of the PCC
Surrey Police
Mount Browne
Guildford
GU3 1YJ

GlinnerForPM · 24/08/2021 21:09

Missed this somehow. Brilliant, refreshing and courageous. Such is the power of the organisation that the Police and Crime Commissioner was advised by her nearest and dearest not to anger them and their followers. Speaks volumes.

OhHolyJesus · 24/08/2021 21:14

Something else that speaks volumes...

What is it that LOJ says? "Look at the state of this!"

Sonarl · 24/08/2021 21:21

"with force"? Says it all really.

Toseland · 24/08/2021 21:40

They say “We will continue to challenge her views by force.”
What have they been up to previously then, I’d like to know?

OhHolyJesus · 24/08/2021 21:45

They've just taken it down.

This group also have something to say about the article.

https://www.facebook.com/100006899624863/posts/2979566792283279/?d=n

To save clicks:

"A few of our members have highlighted a very concerning opinion post in Daily Mail, we want to take this opportunity to respond and ensure our members of their saftey.

It is very concerning to see statements from the police and crime commissioner surrounding trans inclusion and support of these views by the MP for Guildford. At Blossom LGBT we acknowledge the groundbreaking work done by Stonewall and realise that the inclusion of minoritized individuals never excludes other parties. We also acknowledge that the comments from the police and crime commissioner in Surrey will cause unrest, fear and anxiety for trans individuals in Surrey. We are very disappointed that this was either overlooked or intentionally ignored in the decision-making process to release such view.

It is always upsetting when someone in a position of power or authority makes the decision to express views that are damaging to our community.

For the time being we will be suspending any communication with the Police and Crime commissioners office until a clear commitment to the protection of trans policing staff, members of the public and those who support them is made.

Until this time, we will also no longer use our platform as an opportunity to rebuild trust & relationships between the Police & Crime Comissioner and LGBTQ+ individuals; This is because we do not feel that there can any longer be a safe conversation for our members or those who volunteer with us. We want to make it clear that we recognise this is not a reflection on those who work within the force and know that Surrey Police is made up of a fantastic and diverse team.

Blossom LGBT is a safe space for Trans people. We understand why inclusion is so important and know the implications this statement will have on our members. There is no room for hate at Blossom and we will continue to put pressure on service do to what is right. In other words... Trans Rights are Human Rights."

OhHolyJesus · 24/08/2021 21:58

The language in their Facebook is much of the same:

"At Pride in Surrey we recognise and value the long-standing support for the LGBTQ+ community shown by Surrey Police, and we continue to welcome that support from those on the operational “front line”. We know all too well that the views of the elected, political Commissioner do not represent those of the overwhelming majority of police officers or the public in Surrey.

Pride in Surrey has requested a meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner to discuss the issues raised in the News and we will continue to seek to form a practical working relationship.

Our mission statement is to celebrate, educate and connect and the education element of our mission is important to us. Often people’s views are based on misinformation and it is part of our remit to assist people within all areas of society in gaining access to the facts.

We wish to work with the office of the PCC to educate on the issue of transphobia.

The views expressed by our Police and Crime Commissioner are unacceptable for someone in this position and we will continue to challenge her views with force.

Trans rights are human rights."

So 'we want to work with force you to do as we say'

Sonarl · 24/08/2021 22:21

they've taken it down now, Imwomdee if the responses have made them think? I doubt it. Where I live in Surrey has obviously been inundated with this lot - you should see their posts on out local Facebook! The most patronising, condescending posts, you would not believe. Everyone talks about it and laughts at their silly cars. And how they are utterly incapable of stopping the brazen car thefts than happen on a near daily basis now, in daylight, under their noses.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2021 22:22

From the article in the Surrey newspaper that OhHolyjesus posted, with women's sector professionals defending her and agreeing with her comments:

Fiamma Pather is CEO of Your Sanctuary, a Surrey charity for survivors of domestic abuse which has single-sex refuges. She told SurreyLive: "Everybody can't be lumped into one and supported, it just doesn't work."

She said everyone is deserving of support and their outreach service and helpline is there for everyone but "one size does not fit all".

"The sound of a male voice can be absolutely terrifying when they've been subjected to violence from males and shouting in a loud, deep voice," she said. "When you hear that again it brings back that trauma, so they need some time."

"Unfortunately people are very quick to jump on the bandwagon that if you're pro women-only spaces then you're automatically transphobic. I think people don't always understand the nuances and it's a pity debate is often shut down."

Charlotte Kneer, CEO of Reigate and Banstead Women's Aid, also said gender neutral services do not work for women who have suffered domestic abuse.

She said: “Lisa came out to one of our refuges and was interested to know what the women who live there thought about the subject. We found her to be very supportive and wanting to listen and make a difference.

"We should be listening to the voices of the vulnerable women in the refuges. Even if their views could be seen as unpalatable to some, they’re vulnerable and their views should be taken into account.”

This group also have something to say about the article.

we acknowledge the groundbreaking work done by Stonewall and realise that the inclusion of minoritized individuals never excludes other parties

They’re not a ‘group’, they’re 2 unemployed twenty-something year old men desperate to get their little Facebook page with its 122 “likes” noticed.

By telling women that including men in our spaces never excludes other parties, and by that they mean women.

RedDogsBeg · 24/08/2021 22:26

The ratio on their tweet was a thing of beauty, seems they are not as au fait with the views of the public as they think they are.

Warmduscher · 24/08/2021 23:08

I voted for her just before I left Surrey in May of this year. I’ve never voted Tory in my life.

I sent emails to all the candidates and her reply (I only got two) made it clear she knew exactly what I was talking about and what my concerns were. She also said she understood how toxic the debate had become and she thanked me for raising the issue with her.

I’m so pleased she got in.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2021 23:46

Pride in Surrey's tweet response to that article Eresh.

How childish, and completely not acknowledging the very valid points made Confused still it shows you how much they care about women in refuges.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2021 23:47

The sound of a male voice can be absolutely terrifying when they've been subjected to violence from males and shouting in a loud, deep voice," she said. "When you hear that again it brings back that trauma, so they need some time."

I wouldn't be "proud " if you can read that and dismiss it as in the way of trans rights.
