A Green Party leader to 'welcome politically homeless women'

A candidate in the Green Party election contest wants to welcome back women who have been left politically homeless by the assault on sex-based rights.

I'd urge any Green-minded people to join or re-join the party by 27th Aug in order to vote for Shahrar Ali. You can join (if only temporarily) for as little as £13 here: join.greenparty.org.uk/

Shahrar Ali stands a good chance of winning, having previously been deputy leader and gaining 24% of first-preference votes in 2020. He is speaking up unequivocally for women's sex-based rights. You can read his full statement on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/ShahrarAliGreenParty/posts/190051301345352.

He is also in the Guardian here: www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/aug/17/green-transgender-rights-row-leadership-shahrar-ali-sian-berry

If Shahrar wins, he will be the first leader of a British political party willing to stand up to gender identity ideology.

@AnotherLass

I think this is hugely better than Tamsin winning - Tamsin has gone all out on gender in the most grotesque way, the winners have not.
Wasn’t it Carla Denyer who organised the takeover of Green Party Women by gender ideologists. It’s pretty clear where she stand wrt to women and their rights.

This is so disappointing. I’ll stick around for a month as requested but I’m not hopeful for the Greens as my new political home.

DismantledKing · 01/10/2021 11:39

Both the winners have their pronouns in their twitter profiles. Not good news.

WitchButNotTheFunKind · 01/10/2021 11:42

I’m not sure I can stick around, Shahkar Ali was my last hope for an environmental party and I felt ill joining the party that sheltered the Challenors to vote for him.

It feels like we can do too little and by supporting them it’s taken as agreement to all their policies

@GreenieFingers

Thanks Carriemac, I know that this did happen to quite a few members and was hoping that you were in fact able to vote. It would be an interesting question to ask how many recent applicants were not able to vote, with query cases still outstanding. However I don't believe that there was any intention to deprive members of their right to vote. Cheers!
I had to chase my voting code with the Election Returning Officer ERO. I've had years of experience working with excellent local authority EROs & I think the GP election officials just aren't as good, especially if they were inundated with new members. So perhaps no plot.
Iwishihadariver · 01/10/2021 11:53

It would make sense to stick around and put the new leaders on notice that we want to support their climate action priorities but need them to recognise our concerns regarding erosion of women's rights.

Well worth reading this article for a bit of perspective on this:

@Hedgehogface I think you accidentally posted this on the wrong thread Smile

Samuraisammy · 01/10/2021 12:18

Always voted green. Others are just waste of space.

TheGoogleMum · 01/10/2021 12:20

Oh disappointing result though I think we all expected it really. Is the only way to vote on the policies to pay to attend the conference? I joined for a year but don't want to give any more money tbh!

andyoldlabour · 01/10/2021 12:28

Unfortunately this is what you are up against. The Green Party is totally captured.

prudencepuffin · 01/10/2021 12:53

Just read your link Andy - may reconsider sticking around for another month - it does look hopeless.

thirdfiddle · 01/10/2021 13:28

Another one who joined in hope of a party willing to recognise women's rights. Given this evidence that they're still not, I'm not sure I can stay or would be welcome if I did.

There are other important votes coming up in the next weeks, so it may be worth staying around.
GreenGretel · 01/10/2021 14:38

I'd urge people to stick around for the next month, at least. The leader/s don't have as much power as Sian Berry would have liked - that's part of the reason she resigned.

There are other key votes coming up (and if you live in London one happening right now - female rep for London on the party's regional council: please vote for Karen). For more info email GreenFeministsUK [at] gmail.com

The damage was done by prominent Greens who promoted Carla and Adrian. The majority of the Green membership have no clue about who was promoting transgender policies and who was not, some still believe that GPEW are still about Green issues as it should be.

The smear campaign was also disgustingly influential in lowering SA's share of the vote.

andyoldlabour · 01/10/2021 14:49

I find it strange that there are currently 53,000 members of the Green Party, yet only 21,124 votes were cast, just 40% of members.

aliasundercover · 01/10/2021 14:56

My options are rapidly running out: can’t vote Labour; can’t vote Lib Dem; can’t vote Green …
Looks like my vote will be going to a single issue local campaigner, unless I happen to have a candidate who goes against party policy.

LizzieSiddal · 01/10/2021 17:20

Very disappointing. I will stick around for a month or so to see what happens.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 01/10/2021 17:54

Shahrar Ali was my last hope for an environmental party …. It feels like we can do too little and by supporting them it’s taken as agreement to all their policies.

Same concerns here. Environmental activist all my adult life. Resisted joining a political party for many years — didn’t want to waste time on .party politics — but finally thought the Green Party could be effective. I almost left the Green Party after KBristow took over the women’s section but hung on hoping sanity would reassert itself. I’ll stay to see how the new co-leaders deal with the entrenched misogyny, but I’m not hopeful.

We desperately need a serious party that centres the environment. Environmentalism and feminism should be obvious stable-matres, ffs. But I’m not backing any organisation that opposes women’s rights.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 01/10/2021 17:55

Environmentalism and feminism should be obvious stable-mates.

chilling19 · 01/10/2021 19:19

I attended the virtual social event run by the Green feminists and they were fab. Will stick around for the month.

Heruka · 01/10/2021 20:51

Sad news. I’ll do the sticking around short term thing too, then if no sunlight, maybe we could all organise to leave on the same day or something and send a collective message?

GreenandCommon · 01/10/2021 20:55

Did members get an email link to the voting? I wanted to look at turnout. I don't think andyoldlabour's turnout figure of 40% is right is it? Looks smaller than that to me.

So the surge in new members wasn't just us then. I did think SA would get more than that but I thought the other candidates would too!

I think D & R will be keen to do the interview round. I would be surprised if they didn't get some variation of "what's a woman" question. I wonder what they will come up with.

Personally I would find it more appealing to be expelled for saying something politely factual than to leave. Then they could get asked about it by Andrew Marr. I'll give them a chance anyway.

My local party is sound so it's an easier choice.

Ides · 01/10/2021 21:51

Excellent that Sharar Ali didn't win a leadership role. He's really a stuffed up conservative, and that was widely understood. As a Green myself, I'm glad of the two who did.

We Greens have generally been very, very sharp as to the real victims of world... non-human species, the climate, the Earth itself ... and it's now clearly recognised amongst us that transwomen are absymally oppressed and that transphobics don't have any place amongst we Greens.

However, I do wish those women who are unhappy at feeling they're not at the very top of the Heirarchy of the Oppressed in the Green Party better luck at having their supreme oppression (of white, middle class women who've never been hassled by a transwoman, ever - and indeed have never met one or even seen one) recognised in other parties. :)

aliasundercover · 01/10/2021 22:11

Hey thanks Ides, I was still considering I could vote Green as my local candidate is so dedicated and larval headed. You've kind of made my decision for me now - no way could I vote for a party with attitudes like yours, even if the actual candidate is ok.
