Y: The Last Man TV adaptation to affirm TWAW

screenrant.com/y-last-man-gender-identity-spectrum-details/

I was quite looking forward to this show, but looks like they'll be tying themselves up in knots to affirm TWAW... and doesn't that kind of make the whole premise of the show redundant?

Basic premise for those not familiar - overnight every mammal with a Y chromosome mysteriously dies.

Two comments stick out from this article that contradict eachother:

  1. [There are some] men with two X chromosomes
  2. the cast and the crew — are making a show that affirms that trans women are women, trans men are men, nonbinary people are nonbinary

But surely if TWAW then there wouldn't be any immediate crisis following the death of all those with a Y chromosome. If TW were women then humanity could continue procreating and it would be business as usual?

I was genuinely looking forward to this show, but now it just seems like it's going to be an absolute mind melt in the pursuit of woke point scoring. Is anyone else struggling to get their head around this?

I've no issue with comprehending intersex, as any individual carrying a Y chromosome would be affected.

manatsu · 15/08/2021 21:19

Yeah, that sounds really stupid. Either everyone with a Y dies and there's no chance of future reproduction, or they don't and there is a chance.

Unless all the TW are post-op but you know they wouldn't dare potentially insinuate that only post-op TW are valid.

manatsu · 15/08/2021 21:20

No chance beyond the titular last man, obviously

Flamglimglubberty · 15/08/2021 21:22

And surely if TMAM, then the titular last man isn't really last is he?

That turns the story into something completely different then. There will be men, but they'll be in short supply. So presumably they'll be used as sperm donors? They'll need to re-write the story.

It's so hard to get your head around, but I think rather than there still being men (ie males) around, it will be a case of explaining why "women" also died (but they weren't women, they were trans women, ie males, hence why they died)

Already the mental acrobatics are giving me a headache.

I knew gender woo would hit this show. They'll catch flak from TRAs no matter what they do.

They can dance around the Y chromosome stuff all they like, but the title is still there.

When your premise is based on the material reality of sex, you'll never make the TRAs happy.

manatsu · 15/08/2021 21:45

Oh, I've read the article now - it wouldn't load before. So trans women will die on account of having a Y chromosome, but the show will make it clear that many men are still alive because they're XX (or DSD with other chromosome combinations). But the titular last man is the last man. But he's not, he's just the last Guy with a Y. But we're calling him the last man. But that doesn't mean everyone who died was a man. And men are still here. But he's the last man. But TMAM.

help

AnyOldPrion · 15/08/2021 21:53

You’re right OP. The name of the film is no longer valid. It should almost certainly be changed. My suggestion for the makers:

“The Last AMAB Person Who Doesn’t Have A Difference Of Sexual Development That Caused Her To Appear AFAB At Birth”

OneEpisode · 15/08/2021 22:01

I read that as the only surviving potential inseminator is that one bloke (and his male pet). Some transmen survive, because they are XX. That makes sense?

CharlieParley · 15/08/2021 22:52

They'll come in for some derision if they really claim there are women with YY-chromosomes (as a counterpart to XX-males). AFAIK, there's no humans that don't have at least one X-chromosome.

XYY-syndrome is sometimes called YY-syndrome, but individuals with this chromosome combination have normal sex development and are typical males, albeit some with fertility issues caused by a low sperm count.

So there really are no YY-women and no XYY-women.

Nothapppy · 15/08/2021 22:52

Do the transmen become the new rulers? Because of their manliness?

SmokedDuck · 15/08/2021 23:01

They should call it The Last Y.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/08/2021 23:45

Why are they even bothering?

Zandathepanda · 15/08/2021 23:51

Y

Zandathepanda · 16/08/2021 00:35

Other titles:

Y bother
All woman no Y
Who’s Y is it any Y
Tell me Y
Y worry. Be happy

Y am I not sleepy yet? (Last one is just me)

Flamglimglubberty · 16/08/2021 00:41

@Zandathepanda

Y
Given the nonsense it's going to contain, this is the perfect title for it Grin

Flamglimglubberty · 16/08/2021 00:44

It was a really simple concept, rooted in pure biology... How they've over complicated this much is just baffling.

One thing is for sure - television written with this kind of attempt to be didactic and right on is usually complete crap, even if the cause is actually good.

Tibtom · 16/08/2021 08:02

Do the characters have a moment if relevation? That identifying as something they are not doesn't change who they are? Or are they genuiningly puzzled as to why some 'women' die and 'men' survive? Are they pretending TW pass so noone realises they were men?

Tibtom · 16/08/2021 08:03

*of revelation

PaleGreenGhost · 16/08/2021 08:28

How transphobic of them to even use the word man in the title.

Why not the last ejaculator? The last ball bearer? The last dick haver? It's 2021, I thought we'd nailed inclusive language?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 16/08/2021 08:45

And yet the film "Only" didn't fall into that hole. That's worth a watch.

SpindleWhorl · 16/08/2021 08:54

"every living mammal with a Y chromosome dies. Tragically, that includes many women. It includes nonbinary people and includes intersex people. But that’s also true of the survivors"

said a complete melt involved with the production.

Where to even start?

This. It’s going to be cringetastically bad.
