In yesterday's Times, in response to the judgemental statements made by certain male commentators about Emma Raducanu:

"Middle-aged men should generally avoid commenting on the physical or mental well-being of teenage girls. They will never experience or fully understand that world."

Excellent comment!

lolacola77 · 08/07/2021 16:20

Nonsense. What if it was a female commentator and a teenage boy? I'm no fan of McEnroe but he was right. She's clearly not ready to compete at that level. I personally think she's a flash in the pan and we'll probably never hear of her again. Apart from reality shows.

Bobbybobbins · 08/07/2021 16:45

Great comments on this from Judy and Andy Murray. 👏

IntermittentParps · 08/07/2021 16:49

I'd still wonder why they presumed to be an expert on physical or mental health.

I'm no fan of McEnroe but he was right. She's clearly not ready to compete at that level.

'clearly'? How on earth do you know?
Her own statement after the match was gracious, positive and did not try to either place blame or play the victim. In marked contrast to your remarks here, as well as McEnroe's comments and of course those of bully-in-chief Piers 'the strop' Morgan.

Backhills · 08/07/2021 16:54

Surely McEnroe is more than middle aged

I didn't hear what he said, but she did have to retire for MH reasons. People comment on the physical health and resilience of sportsmen and women all the time.

Judy's comment is a good brothers bite but it bothers me because it's not right. Can we not have middle aged male psychiatrists or counsellors? It is actually his job to comment on these things.

Backhills · 08/07/2021 16:55

Brothers bite ? Grin Sound bite

What a disappointing comment from a women about a promising young girl starting her career.

No, she retired for physical reasons. There may have been a psychological reason behind them but the effects were very much physical. I have to say I’m finding some of the negative comments on her very disappointing. No wonder people are still reluctant to talk about mental health when that is the response they get. Judy is spot on in her comments.
ElizabethTudor · 08/07/2021 17:06

Exactly @buffyajp, especially coming so soon after Naomi Osaka pulled out of the French.
There would be an awful lot less speciation / comments if she’d pulled out because of a sprained ankle. Just leave her alone.
So well said Judy Murray.
Piers Morgan should just be ignored. He is vile.
Talking of Osaka, she’s recently said this
Naomi Osaka calls for 'privacy', 'empathy' and 'personal days' www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/57767495

Backhills · 08/07/2021 17:08

But it seems people aren't allowed to talk about it.

ValancyRedfern · 08/07/2021 17:14

I found McEnroes comments incredibly patronising. Especially as at the time no-one had any idea why she had withdrawn. He made the assumption it was because she wasn't mentally strong enough to cope based on no evidence at all.

JassyRadlett · 08/07/2021 17:16

Judy's comment is a good brothers bite but it bothers me because it's not right. Can we not have middle aged male psychiatrists or counsellors? It is actually his job to comment on these things.

Surely that’s covered by the ‘generally’ modifier.

YouSetTheTone · 08/07/2021 17:28

‘Middle-aged men should generally avoid commenting on the physical or mental well-being of teenage girls. They will never experience or fully understand that world."

I’m surprised Judy Murray hasn’t been hounded for being ‘a transphobe’. Surely men absolutely understand teenaged girls and their world and their feelings? After all we’re often told that they are women on the basis of understanding and feeling such things. Hmm

TherapistInATabard · 08/07/2021 17:40

OP, did you start this thread in the sex and gender ‘debate’ topic or has it been moved?

CantGetNoSleep73 · 08/07/2021 17:57

McEnroe was incredibly patronising and rude about Emma.

I also think though Wimbledon made a huge mistake moving her match when she should have been on much earlier. She isn't used to all the attention and it was such a long time to wait.

Given what has happened recently with other tennis players - it was a bad error.

I do hope she is feeling much better and hopefully people will learn from this

JellySlice · 08/07/2021 18:38

@TherapistInATabard

OP, did you start this thread in the sex and gender ‘debate’ topic or has it been moved?
I started it in FWR S&G because you cannot discuss any aspect of Feminism if you cannot clearly label sex and differentiate it from gender. Therefore virtually every discussion on a woman-centred subject belongs here. Or, as I anticipated would happen if there was any interest in this thread, would be moved to this section.

Can we not have middle aged male psychiatrists or counsellors?

Of course we can. What qualifications does Piers Morgan have to pontificate about this young woman?

OP posts:
andyoldlabour · 08/07/2021 18:49

One of our junior male players speaking up for Emma is Jack Pinnington Jones.

www.skysports.com/tennis/news/32498/12350747/emma-raducanu-has-handled-criticism-against-her-well-says-british-junior-no-1-jack-pinnington-jones

She congratulated her opponent and then explained what happened. She started to breathe heavily and felt dizzy. Now bearing in mind what happened to Christian Ericcson, I think the medical staff were correct to advise her to stop.

😂😂 Exactly. The man was ghosted by Meghan Markle and instead of considering it was because he is a pontificating, chauvinist, arrogant bore....he decides it was HER fault she didn't want to see the prat again.

Ekofisk · 08/07/2021 19:42

Also don’t discount the fact that she’s only 18 and had all the pressures of sitting A levels on top of trying to train and compete in elite sport during lockdowns.

Yes that occurred to me actually. How come Judy Murray hasn't been pilloried for saying middle aged men cannot identify as teenage girls - if only for the duration of Wimbledon. Grin

As I sit here awaiting the Raducanu v Sakkari semi-final at the US Open, I just want to say a) McEnroe & Morgan were wrong, b) Judy Murray was right, and c) Ha ha ha ha ha to lolacola77’s tennis insight.

Brilliant - this thread is ageing beautifully isn’t it! Lol!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/09/2021 04:26

I didn't look at the dates on the original post and got quite confused!

I hope MacEnroe eats his words.

I wouldn’t hold told your breath! If anything he’s possibly more likely to present this as evidence he was right - “see, she’s actually this good in terms of physical strength, skill and technique, now that she’s mentally stronger than she was at Wimbledon”…
