In yesterday's Times, in response to the judgemental statements made by certain male commentators about Emma Raducanu:

"Middle-aged men should generally avoid commenting on the physical or mental well-being of teenage girls. They will never experience or fully understand that world."

Good point about the pressure put on players by the public and the media IvyTwines2. We have seen this happen in the UK to players like Johanna Konta & Heather Watson and internationally to Naomi Osaka.

The pressure on British players at Wimbledon are unbelievable and it must take so much resilience not to be negatively affected. Interestingly, Joe Salisbury won both the men's and mixed doubles at the US Open this year but there is less media coverage of doubles events. I wonder if that's easier or if Joe Salisbury is shouting at the news 'I won too!'

I did cringe when the head of the USTA was doing the final speech and spoke of their smiles, do you think Federer has ever had his smile commented on in the presentations?

@lolacola77

Nonsense. What if it was a female commentator and a teenage boy? I'm no fan of McEnroe but he was right. She's clearly not ready to compete at that level. I personally think she's a flash in the pan and we'll probably never hear of her again. Apart from reality shows.

Judy had sensible head on her shoulders - and Andy seems to have listened to her (don’t know about Jamie as I have a seen any comments by him about this).

Yes, yes, yes, all very well, but what if the middle-aged man identifies as a teenage girl? 🤔

JellySlice · 12/09/2021 19:34

He can identify all he likes, but he will still never experience or fully understand that world.
