Am I non binary?

YesClemFandango · 29/06/2021 17:05

Not a TAAT but it got me thinking.... Am I non-binary? I reject gender stereotypes. I would prefer a neutral title (working on it!). I wear clothes that could be considered typically masculine or feminine. To be honest at my age I'd feel a bit odd calling myself non-binary, but I wonder if it's short hand for how my peers understand my views (I'm a student)? How can I check?

OP posts:
MarkRuffaloCrumble · 29/06/2021 17:46

You don’t need to check. If you think you fit the description then you are. I imagine most of us are tbh!

Schrutesbeets · 29/06/2021 17:48

No one is 100% masculine or feminine. That's why the whole thing is ridiculous. You're just... YOU.

EightiesRobot · 29/06/2021 18:13

We're all non-binary so we don't need the label.

midgemagneto · 29/06/2021 18:16

Aka human

PiccalilliChilli · 29/06/2021 18:20

You do you. It doesn't need a label.

Pumperthepumper · 29/06/2021 18:21

Why do you reject gender stereotypes? Which ones specifically?

AdaFuckingShelby · 29/06/2021 18:21

Non binary is meaningless IMO

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 29/06/2021 18:21

I think you're probably just whichever of the 2 biological sexes you were born as. Anything else is just a mixture of your social conditioning and personal preferences.

PaleGreenGhost · 29/06/2021 18:22

If it ever becomes mandatory to choose a gender ID then I guess I'll choose this. It is the one that fits me the closest and I value honesty.

I think the issue comes that by declaring it, one is implying that one believes everyone else is "binary". And until such time as a declaration of gender ID is mandatory and all citizens receive information to help them choose (weirdly only kids get offered this at the moment?) that seems somewhat offensive.

The other issue which keeps me from making this declaration until I legally have to is that I dislike the way in which it entails forcing other people to use different pronouns. I have brought my children up as gender neutral as is possible and stressing about pronouns seems to go against this. They are both regularly mistaken for the opposite sex but don't find it offensive.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/06/2021 18:23

I said this to DD. That I was under the trans umbrella as I was non-binary and genderfluid. She sighed and told me that I wasn't. I think only cool young people are allowed to identify as non-binary, not middle-aged mums. Apparently I just don't understand Grin

Ihavethesamedress · 29/06/2021 18:24

Well, I wear trousers most of the time and don't wear make up. Based on that alone, some people would presume I was a bloke.

weebarra · 29/06/2021 18:29

Don't wear make up, like football and beer. No breasts or ovaries (cancer). Definitely non-binary under various definitions.

SuperSleepyBaby · 29/06/2021 18:30

Do you know any binary people?

lazylinguist · 29/06/2021 18:39

Sex is binary.
Gender is just a name for a bunch of stereotypes which have been attributed to one sex or another, and which vary from era to era and culture to culture, so cannot claim to be in any way fixed, determinable or universal. Pretty much nobody (especially these days) fits precisely into either the feminine set of stereotypes or the male one.

Ergo everyone is of either male or female sex and everyone (if they insist that they have such a nebulous thing as a 'gender identity') is non-binary.

littletinyboxes · 29/06/2021 18:40

IF we have to choose a gender based on what we wear/do/like etc (ie stereotypes) than I would have to be either non-binary or gender fluid too. But then I don't think I know anyone who fits all the stereotypes for either gender so I think this would also mean that everyone (or at least most people) would be non-binary/gender fluid. Which makes the idea of identifying as a gender rather redundant. Which is one of the many reasons that I think I'll stick with the idea that all people are one sex or the other but should free to do/wear/like what they want (as long as it doesn't harm others) without being expected to fit in to a set of social norms.

And also, if those boundaries are so tightly regulated that being non-binary means not wearing makeup as a woman, what happens if you do decide to put some on? Are you binary?
mollythemeerkat · 29/06/2021 19:17

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine - teenagers always sigh when their parents do anything outside of boring and predictable - bit like when everyones dad started wearing Kickers many moons ago. just the way of things.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/06/2021 19:25

You are not non-binary, OP. You'd know because (much like being an empath, vegan or born again Christian) it would be the very first thing you'd tell everyone you met and you'd go into a lot of detail.

SunshineThelma · 29/06/2021 19:29

I'm the same, only I know I'm firmly a woman (the endometriosis is a clue) and the rest is about having a personality and getting on with my life instead of buying into ideas of gender.

I think you have a sex and a personality, end of

Could we have one thread where we don't equate veganism with gender ideology.
Fyi the only time I'm mentioning I'm vegan in recent times is when people on these threads compare it with gender ideology.

Veganism harms no one.
It's really not the same
and you did bring it up first

You are right, I'm sorry. In my defense, at least I didn't bring up the baseless stereotype about Vegans having no sense of humour :-)

TheSlayer · 29/06/2021 20:23

It's only funny the first hundred times.

Mumteedum · 29/06/2021 20:30

I got to 47 without having a gender identity. Was never a girly girl. Managed to just be me and ...shock....still a woman. I just can't be doing with this endless labelling. Fine if it makes you happy but please don't pretend we all have to bother with this.
