Sainsbury don't give a stuff about women...

ChristinaXYZ · 27/06/2021 11:55

... or at least, they don't give stuff about those who want to use the loo as a single sex space.

"Last night, Sainsbury's said: 'We're committed to being a truly inclusive retailer where every single one of our colleagues is treated fairly and with respect.'"

  • unless of course that colleague is a woman who wants a single sex loo or changing room in which case there is absolutely no provision for her none at all.

We recently updated our guidance on colleague toilets and changing rooms and this is based on recommendations made in the Equality Act 2010

I've never seen anything in the EA that directs people to use the toilet they feel best reflects them

It's like they've only read the Stonewall version of the EA which isn't actually the EA.

Also - what percentage of Sainsburys colleagues and customers are women vs men? I would think they employ more women and their customers are predominantly women.

I went on Twitter and found this delightful tweet.

I wonder if he actually knows any women who work at sainsbo's? Because of course no woman would have a problem with a man in their loos/changing rooms. (And again misrepresenting the EA 2010. Hmm )

might be worth all of use emailing that address given further up (i, like others have tried to contact Sainsbos but no way of doing this on their website) asking if they are still SW champions and are they actively getting their advice from them. Then worth pointing out all the recent articles about them as it seems they have buried their head in the sand when it comes to how what SW is up to is finally being reported on
NCwhatsmynameagain · 30/06/2021 14:04

Ahhhh… where the bloody hell to get my shopping from now though.

And again, a little gaggle of men sneering 'What are you afraid of?'

And of course, if you talk about the things that occur in mixed sex provision, it's dismissed.

So I don't bother. I just tell them they're lying about and breaking the law, and btw, I don't need to give a reason why I don't want men around at any given point, you bunch of creeps. Cheers lads.

SnuggledUpInABlanket · 30/06/2021 14:23

My local Sainsburys has one toilet, so used by both sexes. They are revolting.

ChristinaXYZ · 30/06/2021 15:15

It is the sneering that gets me most, like this Barclays video that actually says you find it confusing? well you don't need to understand, just do the following (presumably without question!)

I've never had a toilet reflect me, unless you count the mirrors over the basins?

Take the mirrors out of the Ladies' put mirrors over the urinals in the Gent's - job done? All the penis-people can go and admire their reflections together.

princessandthedragon · 30/06/2021 20:16

Oh no. I get most of my groceries from Sainsbury’s - now I have to find an alternative.

Enough4me · 30/06/2021 20:40

@ChristinaXYZ that video is as clear as the others I have seen... to be an ally you don't need to understand it as only trans people do, but you need to educate yourself because the trans community won't help you, next you share pronouns to appease them, finally celebrate trans memorial day despite not having a clue what it means but remember they need to be kept happy

SapphireSeptember · 01/07/2021 02:08

@FloralBunting

Bingo! I did reply to that thread, I used to work with a TW and quite a few of the women I worked with weren't happy that he used the women's loos/locker room (this was before I was aware of the implications of the whole thing.) He left before I reached that point. I passed on some info about sainsbo's policies to a certain woman last year. I don't work there anymore, thank goodness, but was half expecting to be sacked for my views at some point.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/08/2021 09:59

I emailed into the CEO about this. His office tells me that they have no change to their bathroom policy.

Have they back tracked?

PelvicFloorTrauma · 03/08/2021 10:07

Mishy, don't make me laugh. It is regressive but you obviously can't admit it. Didn't you see the screenshot on Mumsnet recently? The majority of women (biological non-handmaiden) women dislike male bodied people in their spaces with them.

PelvicFloorTrauma · 03/08/2021 10:12

Just shop elsewhere. I haven't bought an innocent product since a 12 year old intern took control of their social media policy and launched an offensive attack on a veteran feminist campaigner. Posters like MISHY want to persuade us that all companies are the same. Ignore the woke, brainwashing nonsense.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/08/2021 10:19

I boycott lots of shops with mixed changing rooms nowadays - but I always email the CEO to tell them why.

And then I message Baroness Nicholson.

They are taking my rights away by stealth. I'm not accepting that quietly. The feckers.

Pastrydame · 03/08/2021 10:40

My favourite restaurant did this (well, made the female toilets "gender free" and kept the men's Hmm ). The bloke walking in as I was walking out looked just as confused and uncomfortable as me. How many people actually like this? I did complain, and got a bit of rudeness back. Haven't been back there since, what's the loss of the revenue of one woman compared to all the young women who apparently had told the manager that it was great?

inthesark · 03/08/2021 11:13

Has anyone actually asked them which bit of the equality act they are referring to? Might be interesting to put them on the spot.

Can you extrapolate on that? Does this mean there are still male and female toilets?
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/08/2021 23:52

Waiting for clarification from their ambiguous wording, Mid

Suspect they think I button up the back.

Please update this thread (and tag me) when you do hear back from them. I think there are people at the top who have been open to and have been proactive in, listening to women.
NiceGerbil · 05/08/2021 02:31

I have a suspicion that a fair few companies esp ones with loads of staff and premises.

Head office says xyz awesome policy we're lovely etc. In response to people asking/ they tell certain publications etc.

But they don't publicise/ roll it out to everyone on the ground as it were.

So they can try to look super fab
But not cause a ruckus with the staff on the sharp end.

PickUpAPepper · 05/08/2021 11:50

"He added: 'Whilst we don't expect everyone to understand the journey trans people go on, we do expect our colleagues to show respect, kindness and understanding to each other.'"

"He" could start by asking about how often men do not display kindness towards women. We have been asking for millennia, and still at the least sign of any inconvenience for men, or any little thing that might mean they can't do exactly what they want, women and girls get pushed out of the way. Violence against women and girls is increasing in Britain, and has always been quite high.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 05/08/2021 14:06

It's an interesting email exchange, Mid. Nice replies, which sound helpful but don't answer the question.

DH is a lawyer, he does it too. If he doesn't like my question he gives an honest answer to the question that he'd prefer to have been asked.

My patience is wearing thin with their Exec Office.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 05/08/2021 14:09

@MidCenturyClegs I wonder if it's worth me having a chat with the local manager. He's a nice guy, and runs a decent shop - they get the primary school in and support local events with goods and raffle prizes etc.

Might just see if I can have a F2F chat with him and really push the point that we have a Mosque in the community and if this is policy (which I suspect it is otherwise I'd not be getting the word-salad answers from the Exec office) then how will he personally ensure the privacy and safety of staff and customers given harm has been done on Sainsbury's premises by male people to female people?
