The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving. It seems appropriate to resurrect today

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul and attacks are increasing.

This is a continuation of Bunbury’s 9th Public Service Announcement but other Bunbury’s are available and I believe Bunbury’s Orchestra is still alive www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4238543-Does-Bunbury-have-an-orchestra

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well-worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.
If you feel your hackles rising, give yourself a break. After the Maya case we may find an escalation.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, the following strategy is suggested

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”
Bunbury’s is under attack so be on your guard - there be dragons looking for witches.
If you’re lurking, Bunbury was a fictitious person in the Importance of Being Earnest - whenever our hero wanted to get out of an unwanted social engagement he would claim to have to be visiting his sick relative Bunbury. Hence the rediscovery of hitherto unknown second wave feminist Germaine Bunbury, to indicate to posters that a thread may in fact constitute an unwelcome social occasion they might want to avoid (courtesy of FermatsTheorem)
Finally, TAAT (thread about a thread) will get the thread removed. Let’s see how long this one lasts.

is it acceptable to report a thread for being goady and utterly moronic? I don’t know, as some people are engaging with it and if they somehow see some kind of value in the thread or its OP I don’t want to ruin their fun. I don’t know if it would be deleted if reported but it’s sufficiently goady that there’s a good chance. 🤷‍♀️

My instinct is to let it run. Eventually these posters out themselves with so much evidence of their goading that MHNQ have one of their "we don't think this site is for you" conversations (as has evidently happened with recent goadies) or they give up. Loads of posters have been on here for many years (with various name changes) and are quite stoic in the face of tedious agitators.

Another goady, bullshit thread has been put up. Actually an interesting question but the complete misrepresentation of what 'GC' views are is a bit of a giveaway.

Thelnebriati · 18/05/2022 11:30

Unlucky for some - it might be unlucky for me...

Agree with it being great to see so many new, articulate and passionate posters. Just for me, Arabella was a bit of an inspiration as a knowledgable Scottish feminist when I was new to all this.

I was missing Arabella too. I'm obviously concerned that her vigil took a turn.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/05/2022 22:27

Maybe time for a quick bump?

Maybe time for a quick bump?

I think so too.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 24/05/2022 22:32

Good thinking mrsoverton

ArabellaScott · 24/05/2022 23:10

I aten't dead.

Sometimes one is on a vigil for SO LONG that one forgets ones own name.

CrossPurposes · 24/05/2022 23:48

Hooray!

Waitwhat23 · 24/05/2022 23:50

We'll have to make you a Granny Weatherwax style sign!

MagnoliaTaint · 25/05/2022 08:59
Grin

Yes. And one of those counting boards that is updated daily to say:

'I have been on this vigil for 3452 days with no answer to my question of what JK Rowling said that was transphobic'

Igneococcus · 25/05/2022 11:43

Arabella, woohoo.
Is there moss growing on your West facing side yet, or do you turn around occassionally?

ArabellaScott · 25/05/2022 12:16

Lichen on the north. Not liken the look of a wet summer in this deckchair.

Still, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to let me know what JK Rowling said that was transphobic.

GAHgamel · 25/05/2022 14:50

Aaand another one...

MagnoliaTaint · 25/05/2022 14:57

What I don't understand is why everyone is so down on Taylor Swift. I bloody love her. Catchy.

JanieAllen · 26/05/2022 21:07

honestly ... am having such a shit week.... what do people do to get through this madness apart from not drink

Waitwhat23 · 26/05/2022 21:50

Honestly? Cooking shows. Am currently watching Bake Off:The Professionals - that and Bake Off are my go to if having a bad day.

JanieAllen · 26/05/2022 21:59

cup of tea and Chelsea Flower show coverage #gardenporn

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/12/2022 10:22

Bumping this thread as a reminder that there's a long history of new "I'm as GC as they come BUT..." posters, sock puppets, those looking to create a quick twitter outrage & a range of bad faith plopping posters, generally not seeking to engage in feminist discourse but usually to mansplain their version of male supremacy.
Not mentioning any names - that gets deleted. Just to point out that this happens regularly on here.

Breakfastinbedonhols · 30/12/2022 12:09

I don’t usually post on Bunbury because I name change so often, but check in every now and again.
There have been many festive ploppers recently. One after another in some instances.
I feel like there are too many cooks in the kitchen stirring for me to make a difference. I’m glad there are others who keep adding good quality ingredients to the mix too.

Floisme · 30/12/2022 12:31

I never used to do this but there are a small number of posters I will no longer engage with.

Floisme · 30/12/2022 12:31

That's why Bunbury's advice is so helpful - not that I always have the self discipline to follow it when confronted by yet another GF.

highame · 30/12/2022 13:29

I check in but rarely post now. What is amazing is how the knowledge develops, grows and spreads. It's just great to see how much is out there and how many of the uninformed are now getting over the confusion and realising what the impacts might be on their daughters and their sons.

Good advice about how to not respond to trolls even if the buzzz like a devilish insect!

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/12/2022 14:02

I don't post much on those threads - prefer to watch posters like @Helleofabore elegantly doing their stuff - but I have in the past occasionally posted "I'm blocking you now" which tends to leave them Confused

I'm also reporting posters who persistently contravene Da Roolz, especially
Sweeping negative generalisations about any group, including trans people and gender-critical feminists, won’t be tolerated.
