Bunbury's Thirteenth edition - unlucky for some.

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving. It seems appropriate to resurrect today

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul and attacks are increasing.

This is a continuation of Bunbury’s 9th Public Service Announcement but other Bunbury’s are available and I believe Bunbury’s Orchestra is still alive www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4238543-Does-Bunbury-have-an-orchestra

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well-worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.
If you feel your hackles rising, give yourself a break. After the Maya case we may find an escalation.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, the following strategy is suggested

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”
Bunbury’s is under attack so be on your guard - there be dragons looking for witches.
If you’re lurking, Bunbury was a fictitious person in the Importance of Being Earnest - whenever our hero wanted to get out of an unwanted social engagement he would claim to have to be visiting his sick relative Bunbury. Hence the rediscovery of hitherto unknown second wave feminist Germaine Bunbury, to indicate to posters that a thread may in fact constitute an unwelcome social occasion they might want to avoid (courtesy of FermatsTheorem)
Finally, TAAT (thread about a thread) will get the thread removed. Let’s see how long this one lasts.

That's why Bunbury's advice is so helpful - not that I always have the self discipline to follow it when confronted by yet another GF.
One thing I watch out for is posters tagging me when there's nothing particularly remarkable about what I've said. I keep an eye on them and, if they carry on doing it, then that's it.

I look for the fact deniers Floisme. I've been on the men in women's spaces thread in AIBU and there are posters insisting that there were no campaigns for breastfeeding spaces in stores etc back in the day and therefore it's wrong to point out that that changing them to mixed sex parents facilities hasn't happened as they didn't exist!! All the women pointing out that this is women's / feminist history and the campaigns did happen and the breastfeeding spaces did exist are wrong and telling lies.

I'm trying not to engage with them - but failing 😀

Why thank you OmiOmy. It's so sad seeing women so desperate to deny our progress and history - especially when it's being dismantled in front of our eyes.

There has been a sea change on fwr over the last year or so. Definitely a different type of "feminist" sailing in.

I name change a lot & sometimes worry that I'll be seen as a"plopper" but my feminist history is up to the mark - card-carrying second waver who's made a career from finding out stuff about overlooked or forgotten women.

I've been a bit depressed about that AIBU Men in Women's spaces thread too - so many women who can't possibly do anything without t'menz

I saw that attitude in baby sling groups I was in online around 7-8 years ago. It's how it's infected the LLL as many are also bfers.

I remember these rooms way back in the 60s and 70s when I was a child and before (I think) the campaign for BF spaces existed. I remember kind of anterooms to women's toilets where there were (depending on the opulence of the store) mirrors, comfy seats, maybe a couple of armchairs, ashtrays (it was the era!), and, at the back, rooms with white curtains that were used for changing babies and presumably BF-ing. Sometimes there were just a couple of curtained rooms with plastic chairs. I was only a child and not BF but I am sure I remember these! I think many disappeared in the 80s with refurbishments. I also remember when department stores had nurses. My mum hurt herself once and we got taken to the nurse.

Floisme · 31/12/2022 09:39

I remember rooms like that too and I think some of the posh department stores still have them.

I've not seen the AIBU thread but I associate blokey feminism with younger women and I was probably prone to it myself once so I cut them some slack. But if you're hearing it from women who've had children then that sounds new.

That thread gave me the rage so I'm trying to avoid it Rufus - failed as I've just had a sneaky look and some more informed woman have posted recently.
Presumably the thought of agreeing that some women need / prefer a single sex space to breastfeed is so terfy that some women lose their minds and can only rage fake, false, didn't happen in response to factual information - just like the average transactivist?

Because we all spent many hours in the 70s, 80s & 90s on social media recording recent campaigns. In fact, much of the breastfeeding campaigning was recorded in the local press - that's where I heard about it at the time.

I think it's one thing if the arguing is relevant to the topic of the thread, but if I suspect an attempt at either deflection or goadiness then I don't cut them any slack any more. I might misjudge it sometimes which is a shame but there we are.

I see the klaxon has sounded on the pronouns thread. Is there a twitter alert for when there's a thread on here about pronouns? Alllll the new names!

I've completely avoided the Men in Women's spaces thread - it's just too depressing.

The Scottish MAP one is fairly.....!!

When my youngest was tiny, I went shopping with baby and friend for the first time post birth. Baby had other plans I it wound up being a tour of miscellaneous mother and baby rooms. Got to see a bit of a cross section. Harvey Nick, despite being by far the newest building, only had the disabled toilet. Debenham's was nice. It had a window overlooked by an internal staircase. While I was bf a male member of staff was watching me. I didn't notice and my friend didn't tell me until we got home or I hope I would have raised hell.

Haven't been on for a while as lots of ahem interesting new posters a few weeks ago. Just skimmed a few threads and now I feel a bit sick. I'm sure it's purely coincidence that posters now promoting the use of MAP have also been very busy scolding women on here for their concerns around safeguarding. All I can say is I applaud your endurance, persistence and patience in the face of this crap. Looking towards 2023 and hopeful that people see the light. Thank you all.

I'm always suspicious of those posters - even when they claim to be parents of hundreds & Victorian feminists with degrees in all the ologies known to humankind. 😉 But mentioning no names as it's nice to see a Bunbury thread at the top of this board.

Happy New Year to everyone.
