School Video. Words just can’t convey...

For all those who PM’ed and wanted me to put it on its own thread.
Here you go.

This is the video my year 6 watched at school (without any consultation with parents)
I’m just speechless.

They were also told about Robert/a Cowell and puberty blockers were mentioned, although I’m not sure of those details.

Head and deputy are the safeguarding leads at the school, so where do I start with the Governors? Overwhelmed.

It seems age-appropriate and non-controversial.

What's the problem?

OhDear2200 · 24/05/2021 13:59

@yeahbutnaw

“The doctors are wrong”

WipeYourFeet · 24/05/2021 14:01

What happened to "but sex and gender are different!"

That video is staggering

SittingHereShaking · 24/05/2021 14:02

I haven't watched the video but to answer your question, yes, the governors, there will be a safeguarding link governor and you can probably find out who it is on the website.

Undersnatch · 24/05/2021 14:03

I didn’t see your other thread. That video is shocking. How did you find out about it?

JustcameoutGC · 24/05/2021 14:04

That is outrageous. I would flip my flippin lid. Not only on teh gender stuff - but Drs getting it wrong, WTAF. I have just seen our school uses the Jigsaw programme - is this part of it?

OhDear2200 · 24/05/2021 14:05

My mind is slightly blown away at the idea of “educating” children that the doctors were wrong when they were born and got their ‘gender’ wrong.

Please tell me there are some sensible biology teachers out there screaming?

RoyalCorgi · 24/05/2021 14:06

Oh goodness, that is appalling.

But why does the board say LGQT when the presenter keeps talking about LGBT?

pitterpatterrain · 24/05/2021 14:06

“That’s called a gender assignment...” and it goes downhill from there

pitterpatterrain · 24/05/2021 14:07

Hah Royal I also thought that

Erikrie · 24/05/2021 14:07

Christ. Talk about confusing kids. This political stuff is not supposed to be pushed in schools anymore. Take a look at transgender trend op for guidance.

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/05/2021 14:07

No doctor announced anything about the sex or gender of either of my babies when they were born. Everyone already knew they were male due to scans, and the information was just noted down on the notes and baby's wristband. No "gender " was "assigned".

This video is bonkers propaganda. It's scientifically illiterate and totally inappropriate to be presented to UK primary school children as if it's factual.

FindTheTruth · 24/05/2021 14:08

from the video:

When we talked about gender, we said there aren't just boys and girls.
01:58
You have a really great memory, Teddy.
02:00
You're right. There's something a bit weird about how doctors assign gender to babies.
02:07
That's because there aren't only boys and girls.

02:15
Oh, so the doctors are wrong sometimes?
02:19
Yes, Teddy, sometimes doctors don't assign the right genders.
02:23
When a person does not identify, with the gender they're assigned when they're born,
02:28
they are trans or transgender.
02:31
People who are trans can be boys or girls or people too.
02:36
And I can always ask someone their pronouns, just like you taught me.
02:40
That's right, Teddy. There is also another word you should know.
02:44
It's the word "cisgender".
02:46
Someone who is cisgender DOES identify, with the gender they're assigned.
02:52
Okay, since you are assigned "girl" and you use "she", then you are cisgender.
02:58
That is exactly right, Teddy.

I knew I recognised that from somewhere:

Oh, I think you know what the problem is. As for 'age-appropriate', note how the presenter skips through the whole video in a sing-song voice using one-syllable words right until she gets to 'identify with your gender assigned at birth'.

She explained the bit about 'assigning gender' but tell me, what 4 or 5-year-old can understand the phrase 'identify with' without further explanation? Why didn't the presenter explain what it means to 'identify with' along with everything else? Because she can't? Because she would have to revert to stereotypes? Those would be my guesses.

So no, in addition to the fact that the whole video is total nonsense, I don't even think it's 'age-appropriate' on its own terms.

OP, I don't know what to suggest. I would have serious issues with this video, and I think you need to raise them somehow.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/05/2021 14:10

The video uses the speaking teddy and child like language to build a relationship and emotional connection with the viewing child. The child can trust this person as safe, friendly and reliable - they can be believed.
Except.... the language and content are inaccurate, scientifically wrong, breach the DfE SRE guidelines and gaslight the child into believing that changing sex is possible because of a doctor's mistake.

RoyalCorgi · 24/05/2021 14:12

I assume you're in a UK school, OP? Why are they using a video created by a group in San Francisco?

ConcreteUnderpants · 24/05/2021 14:12

School is planning on implementing Jigsaw, yes.
This was apparently shown a few months ago - I only found out about it by chance through another mum. No consultation, nothing.

All Deputy head did apparently was pass the buck onto the year 6 teachers and apologise. Nothing about what would be done to ‘unconfuse’ these kids.

Can’t find Equal Opportunity policy on the school website. Nothing in the SEN or safeguarding policy either. Their RSE policy just consists of a single page of how they will teach kids age appropriate terms, respect blah blah. Nothing mentioned at all about trans, stupid doctors, lots of different genders, etc..

I’m popping down the blood vessels in my temples at an alarming rate today but I’m honestly so horrified and gobsmacked that people this was thought ok, I don’t know where to start.

Eyesofdisarray · 24/05/2021 14:13

No no no
Conflating sex/gender
"Assigned gender at birth" ??? How: when there are so so so many???
Drs wrong?? Wouldn't fill kids with confidence
What about kids with special needs??? My DD would have been very confused about this.
Terrible
Do your school know about SSA???

FindTheTruth · 24/05/2021 14:14

DfE guidelines are pretty clear. Don't teach children about being born in the wrong body

jeaux90 · 24/05/2021 14:14

FFS. I would make an appointment with the Head. Make them watch it and justify teaching my child shit that isn't true then talk about safeguarding implications.

I took this issue on at my DD's primary school too, I spoke to the head. It went the way of common sense and safeguarding.

ConcreteUnderpants · 24/05/2021 14:14

Do your school know about SSA???

I’m not even sure if they know about the DfE after watching that.
