The bbc article is incredible for them But the scheme is not without controversy - earlier this week an independent report commissioned by the University of Essex found that Stonewall gave it incorrect and potentially illegal advice on transgender issues.

so I'm now cynically wondering if there has been some coordination with Stonewall.

I'm sure the call has gone out to other organisations and individuals to deflect from Stonewall's activities by claiming transphobia. Lil OJ's peddling his right side of history inanity in support. Right side of history for misogynists LOJ.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 23/05/2021 15:43

Or indeed pedalling

Binglebong · 23/05/2021 15:45

I'm genuinely getting teary over the idea of this ending. I know it's just one step of many but it's a big one. Hope.

This may be a Eurovision hangover.

Thingybob · 23/05/2021 15:57

That is interesting that Stonewall mentioned them. Rather randomly yesterday they posted a pile of tweeted that they said were threatening and abusive. This was a bit out of the blue, so I'm now cynically wondering if there has been some coordination with Stonewall

I tried to get to the bottom of why this group Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) were mentioned and I came to the conclusion that this was the best example they could find of an attack on an LGBTQ+ organisation.

The attack in question seems to consist of two tweets from a mother who objected to this group having any influence in her children's education. It seems a responsible enough objection given that many people do not sign up it this ideology and that TIE does not seem to have any professional credentials but has the ear of the Scottish government. The CEO is a 26 year old who founded the organisation when he was 19. One tweet also pointed out that TIE had had support from one unsavoury character who no one in their right mind would want involved with kids. The tweeter (mother) has now been banned from Twitter.

Leafstamp · 23/05/2021 15:57

Fantastic that this is being reported on the bbc news website.

Binglebong · 23/05/2021 16:06

Rather hidden - I got a link elsewhere and had to search. If enough view it though the algorithm should push it up though.

crossparsley · 23/05/2021 16:15

The BBC story in binglebong’s link has an odd edit to the EHRC announcement, though: omits ‘and those with all other protected characteristics’ between ‘LGBT employees’ and ‘are accepted without exception’. Obviously might be just to save space, but it does change the meaning of what the EHRC said, if you only read the BBC story. Van they not help themselves? Shouldn’t this story have been even more carefully proofed than usual?

Mollyollydolly · 23/05/2021 16:16

John McManus has been watching all this for a while. He's one of the good guys. Always tweeted about Maya and Allison, has obviously been watching it all closely and following the arguments. Nice to see an article like this from him.

Leafstamp · 23/05/2021 16:26

Glinner’s latest post on this topic : ‘Sunlight pours in’:

PronounssheRa · 23/05/2021 16:48

@Leafstamp

Nancy Kelley has retweeted this embarrassingly unprofessional tweet. So even the CEO is endorsing this style of SM comms?!

I’m truly agog.

They are playing to the kids on twitter, seemingly unaware of the huge amount of scrutiny they are coming under. They still think the no debate tactic will work.

To be fair to Nancy who doesn't seem up to the job she did inherit this shit storm from Ruth Hunt, who is now sitting pretty in the house of Lords.

Shedbuilder · 23/05/2021 16:58

Yes, and Baroness Hunt has been strangely absent from any debate that touched on gender. What's going on? If there's a public inquiry and Stonewall's exposed in the way I anticipate — encouraging lesbian and gay teens to transition, supporting drug treatments that leave them sterile, misrepresenting the law and statistics and lying over and over again, attempting a coup against science and material reality — will she be able to keep her title and position?

It takes a hell of a lot to remove someone from the HoL and rescind their title Shedbuilder but certainly the reputational damage would be epic.

Bingbunnychaos · 23/05/2021 17:42

@Shedbuilder

Which sponsored bodies?
Welsh government?
OvaHere · 23/05/2021 17:43

Just caught up on this thread. Fantastic news and long overdue from the EHRC.

That SW tweet though. Shock

Note to Stonewall - scrutiny and accountability of a professional body in receipt of government funds is not 'creepy'. If you're unsure why go ask the BBC!

Paralithic · 23/05/2021 18:13

Proud Employers (Stonewall’s job site) have a list of Stonewall Diversity Champions here:

www.proudemployers.org.uk/diversity-champions-programme

It still lists the EHRC so I don’t know how up to date it is.

The news about EHRC was only released at midnight afaict so it might be a bit soon for this to have propagated through the various system and other updates?
Mollyollydolly · 23/05/2021 18:40

David Aaronovitch has just handed LOJ his arse gift wrapped on Twitter. I can only see half the conversation but it is a thing of beauty.

EHRC cuts ties with Stonewall.
Paralithic · 23/05/2021 18:49

Embarrassing true, the information came out yesterday, the EHRC wrote to Stonewall in March confirming that it wasn’t renewing its membership - I wonder when membership expires?

Binglebong · 23/05/2021 18:49

That bbc article is now on the News front page. The clicks are working!

You're right about the obvious omission crossparsley, I'm just so used to it I don't notice anymore.

LizzieSiddal · 23/05/2021 18:52

The EHRC said they don’t renew in March so they’ve had quite a few weeks to take them off the list. I expect they don’t want to take it down.

I’ve just tried to see Matthew Paris’ article in the Times and I can’t find it, it was at the top of the Comments section this morning. Anyone else having issues finding it?

Molly thank you for that tweet. That’s the icing on the cake of a good news day Grin

From OJ: The hounding of Stonewall by the same media outlets who poured bile and hatred on gay people for decades is grotesque.

Those who hound trans people today: all history will ever remember you for is as hateful persecutors of a marginalised minority. That's your only contribution.

You've had our backs, @stonewalluk We've got yours.

From David Aaronovitch
Replying to
@OwenJones84
Maybe. But you can hardly ignore the criticism of Stonewall by some of those who helped found it.

From: Owen Jones Rose
to David Aaronovitch

counterpoint: yes I can. the history of members of minorities who kick the ladder they've climbed from beneath them is long and sordid.
also you work for a newspaper organisation which incites hatred against travellers, Muslims, and trans people, and publishes one of Anders Brevik's key influences. you essentially work for Breitbart, at what point do you look in the mirror and ask yourself searching questions

From: David Aaronovitch
To: OJ
Yep. Me and Anders Breivik. Practically an item.

From: Owen Jones Rose
To: AD
You work for a newspaper which incites bigotry against some of the most marginalised minorities in Britain, including outright lies about Muslims. You have no authority of any description on issues of bigotry, and it’s embarrassing you think your opinions on LGBTQ rights matter.

From: David Aaronovitch
To OJ

Hold on. You’re not a lesbian. You’re not trans. You’re not a Jew or a Palestinian. You’re a middle class white guy. Yet you clearly believe your opinion matters on EVERYTHING. Not even an opinion: your talent for outrage. So yes, my opinion on ‘rights’ does count. Ciao.

From: Owen Jones Rose
To: AD

There’s a reason you’re being retweeted by far right and hard right accounts like Turning Point UK. It’s because you work for a newspaper which systematically whips up hatred against vulnerable minorities. They don’t see you as your enemy as a consequence. Hope you feel pride!

The fact you’re trying to condemn a gay man for supporting his own civil rights organisation sums you up - an ex Communist turned cliched reactionary pub bore who works for an overtly racist newspaper. And I’m afraid that is all you will ever be remembered for.

From: David Aaronovitch
To: OJ

Stop Owen. This is a tantrum you’re having. No one thinks less of me because of all the insults you’re tweeting at me. But I’m not sure the same is true for you.

From: Jane Symons
To: DA and OJ

To be honest David, many of us so familiar with Owen's tantrums that another one won't make any difference to the contempt in which he is held.

From: suzanne moore
To: OJ

phrase making is not your strong point is it?

Novina · 23/05/2021 18:56

Fantastic that it's getting prominence on the bbc, and excellent that they mention the Essex fiasco in the report. I also liked the thought upthread that, whilst not exactly an all round rejection of sw, the ehrc has provided a model for organisations on how to leave the scheme.

The extra ep of Glinner's The Mess We're In today was excellent, and Maya was a guest. I recommend it, if you didn't watch earlier.

From the documents on Sex Matters, I think that news was embargoed from when it happened until last night? I may be wrong tho'
