That is such an extraordinary response by Stonewall that I think archiving it might be sensible:

This is amazing news. I think for any organisations that want to step away, this is their get out but they will do it quietly. The one thing I cling on to is that this issue has ignited radical feminism in many women and shown liberal feminism for the sham it is. Obviously those on the ground won't get recognition for the amazing work they've done and continue to do on this issue but it was ever thus. Many of us also aren't as naive as we once were and can now see how easily we almost lost everything. Vigilance is key going forward. I for one will never forget how easily organisations capitulated when they didn't have to.

Stonewall just listed this twitter.com/stonewalluk/status/1396374101988569091?s=09

I'm not really sure they want to be highlighting this to all of their followers? Confused

Handy digest of a few recent articles. Thanks, Stonewall.
Ikeameatballs · 23/05/2021 09:47

I think the Daily Mail article on this is excellent. I can’t see anything on the Guardian website....

That takes the fucking biscuit!!

Stonewall blocked me this week - along with a load of other women, it seems - and are now flouncing about with this shittage on twitter, blimey, who the hell runs their account!!?

FannyCann · 23/05/2021 09:47

Here is a link to the Sex Matters letter calling for a public enquiry which anyone can add a signature to.

I'm not going to forget or settle. These bastards have ruined my peace of mind for the last five years. I am a victim of serious sexual assault and violence by men and I have been traumatised by the activities of these 'charities' and their attacks on women and women's rights. They should be held to account and the public need to know how close they came to succeeding.

And it isn't over yet, the threat is still there.

That is an extraordinary response.

Who is in charge of stonewall’s Twitter, and more importantly, does their mum know?

NecessaryScene1 · 23/05/2021 09:49

In a few years from now the majority of 'friendly unawares' will have no idea how close this came and what a HUGE war on women this was.

There are many people who don't think Y2K or the ozone hole were a big thing.

There are many people who worked hard to make sure they weren't.

That's our best case scenario.

We're not in it for the glory, right?

If the majority of the public know what we did, then far more people were hit by it than ever should have been. We want this to come to an end as soon as possible, before it really gets out of hand. We don't want to be cleaning up afterwards.

Helen Joyce :

I can't stop this, but I can hopefully play a part in shortening it so there will be some number fewer of getting kids who are sterilized because of what I'm doing and writing and that gives me a moral clarity and purpose in what I'm doing.

Sophoclesthefox · 23/05/2021 09:49

Go home, Stonewall, you’re drunk.

highame · 23/05/2021 09:50

I hope James Dreyfus starts being hired for acting roles again and Glinner starts being able to write comedy again that programme makers will actually answer an email or two of his! I think, unless the BBC looks at it's programme procurement department, this wont happen. I read somewhere that the % of trans in the department is very high. BBC impartiality is seriously impacted

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 23/05/2021 09:53

@WineAcademy

I think it's worth considering how patterns of abuse in domestic life are replicated in the political sphere. This podcast examines the issue:

podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/resistance-radio-guest-josh-slocum/id723644446?i=1000512945534

"This is not about trans, it's not about feeding impoverished children, it's not about women's rights....what they want is control...obedience...performative obdience....What they want you to do, is for you to ... speak the lie [in front of other people]"

Always - Cialdini and other social psychologists write about this in connection with the prisoners of war etc.

Good thread about this with DA EA connection:

"Jacob T. Levy's piece about Authoritarianism and Post-Truth Politics highlighted this":

[The] great analysts of truth and speech under totalitarianism—George Orwell, Hannah Arendt, Vaclav Havel—can help us recognize this kind of lie for what it is. Sometimes—often—a leader with authoritarian tendencies will lie in order to make others repeat his lie both as a way to demonstrate and strengthen his power over them.

Saying something obviously untrue, and making your subordinates repeat it with a straight face in their own voice, is a particularly startling display of power over them. It’s something that was endemic to totalitarianism.

Good OP in this thread:www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3312516-Are-we-arguing-about-the-wrong-thing?reverse=1

I will be so very happy if this prediction becomes true.

It feels like we've made some impact but there's still a long way to go.

NecessaryScene1 · 23/05/2021 10:06

Looks like they've let someone the youngest person yet run the Stonewall Twitter account today. Shock

Replies to that tweet are very interesting.

Whoever manages their social media will be blocking a lot of people today...

In her recent interview with What The Trans, Nancy Kelly said that 17% of Stonewall'employees are trans. This is HUGELY disproportionate to the population surely? She was very proud of this and wanted to increase it.

A good way forward for Stonewall might be to become a trans only service? There's no harm in that, and if there is an appetite for it, it might be a good thing? Fill it with sensible trans people who know the law and will work WITH the LGB community and women's groups, surely it can only be a good thing?

AdHominemNonSequitur · 23/05/2021 10:09

I am sure we largely have the new chair Baroness Faulkner to thank for this. So I don't think it is a running scared situation. I think the adults came in into the room, and I am thankful for her, also I wouldn't underestimate all the unseen bravery that was probably required to made this happen.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/05/2021 10:10

What we also need to focus on is strengthening protections in a way that makes them harder to remove next time. Build stronger defences so the next storm can’t breach them.
I am happy to campaign for third spaces alongside women’s single sex spaces but I will be pushing for stronger ring fencing of sex based protections.

@PearPickingPorky

This is why Stonewall hod their online list of Stonewall Diversity Champions, isn't it. Because they lost the EHRC.

Ahhhh! Makes sense now!

Cwenthryth · 23/05/2021 10:12

Wow....that tweet from Stonewall....really? A large , mostly publicly funded charity, is being called out in the national press for bullying a black lesbian professional, and that it’s policies breach equalities law, being accused of discrimination.....and that is it’s considered response? Really?

What the actual?

Totally agree, especially your comment about unseen bravery.

As one of the replies to the tweet notes - it's going to be used as an example of how not to do crisis comms for years to come.
