Lesbian Visibility Week

ASugarr · 01/05/2021 07:39

As Lesbian Visibility Week comes to an end, I want to make a quick reminder that
ALL LESBIANS ARE VALID!

Cisgender and Transgender women can be lesbians. Transgender men who date women don't consider themselves lesbians. All Lesbians deserve visibility!

Additionally, many have stated that they don't wish to date transgender people. That's fine! Just because someone is in the same dating pool doesn't mean you MUST be attracted to them. Plus genital preference is also totally fine! But don't forget, trans women are women so please do not degrade them just because you personally don't wish to date them.

Plus, let's continue to educate one another on the important information. Like preventing STI's as a lesbian, domestic abuse in lesbian relationships and how to deal with that, safe and consentual sex between lesbians. This is what we need to be educating young lesbians and bisexual women on.

Have a fabulous long weekend all 🤍🌈

& much good it's done them - they (& we) are being dragged on Twitter with wildly DARVO-ing accusations of racism...

WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis · 03/05/2021 13:04

how do you find her on twitter?

WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis · 03/05/2021 13:08

got it

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

It is very common for white people, especially white Americans for some reason, to make a reference to black women when arguing for the inclusion of white transwomen.

When I first encountered this line, I was flabbergasted. It made no sense! It was like being told 2+2=5, because 2+2=4.

Gradually, as I encountered this line over and over again, the origins of it became clear.

It rests on two subconscious presumptions: the first is a eurocentric ideal of what a woman 'should' look like- white, and probably with straight hair, and conforming to Western Beauty Standards.

The second presumption is that what makes someone a woman is not whether she is an adult human female, but how closely she meets the Western, eurocentric ideals of female beauty.

People making the comparison are implicitly arguing that if we can count black women as women when they're not white, why not white transwomen, BECAUSE they're white.

In short, it rests on horrific racism.

This is why I think it was racist.

Now, back to Lesbian Visibility.

Martina Navratilova! One of the greatest tennis players of all time.

WoolOfBat · 03/05/2021 13:12

Can we get back to lesbian visibility week?

I came across Arielle Scarcella on Twitter for the first time thanks to something someone posted here. The tweet below made me smile...

In 1982 Navratilova won 90 of 93 matches, including 41 consecutive matches, and 15 tournaments, notably the Wimbledon women’s singles and theFrench Openwomen’s singles. The following year she won 86 of 87 matches, theU.S. Openwomen’s singles, the Wimbledon women’s singles, and theAustralian Openwomen’s singles. Beginning with the 1983 Wimbledon title, she won six consecutive Grand Slam women’s singles titles. The 1980s also marked the height of her friendly rivalry withChris Evert. Navratilova pitted her serve-and-volley game against Evert’s baseline style in 80 matches, winning 43 of them. In 1986 at Filderstadt,West Germany, she became the second player in modern tennis to win 1,000 matches.

Best to ignore the DARVO effect anyway. I suspect it's an attempt to get this thread deleted from a distance.

And Martina Navratilova is indeed absolutely fabulous.

WoolOfBat · 03/05/2021 13:14

Navratilova was a truly amazing player 🥂

Erikrie · 03/05/2021 13:15

Arielle has come a long way. And shows how people can finally see the light.

Yes and when you're replying to your own twitter threads to make it seem like people are replying then that truly stinks of desperation and toddler level "I know you am but what am I?"

Magdalen Berns was inspirational for me.

Erikrie · 03/05/2021 13:20

I love Magdalen. I showed my teen DD some of her work last night. She was inspired. I actually managed to drag her off til tok for half an hour she was that impressed.

WoolOfBat · 03/05/2021 13:22

Magdalen was absolutely amazing. She came across as so fearless and outspoken, I wish more women were like Magdalen.

Chrysanthemum5 · 03/05/2021 13:24

@WoolOfBat I also love magdalen but I wish women didn't have to be fearless and outspoken about this - I'd rather sanity prevailed without women having to be constantly vigilant

I just want to celebrate my friend Who has always been great, the couples on my street who are welcoming and kind and all the other lesbians I’ve known in real life, never mind famous people. The regular women. Bringing up kids, working ordinary jobs, living decent lives, just being good people.

RedDogsBeg · 03/05/2021 13:59

Your analysis is spot on PurgatoryOfPotholes.

My hackles always rise when they use the black women are women tag, why the fuck wouldn't they be women? What has the colour of their skin got to do with it? It is as racist as racist can be. A woman is an adult human female, that's it, irrespective of the colour of their skin, or their hair, or their height, or their weight.

ArabellaScott · 03/05/2021 14:09

It's very telling we never hear 'white women are women', isn't it?

JensonsAcolyte · 03/05/2021 15:19

Could someone direct me to the Twitter feed? Ta muchly.

Erikrie · 03/05/2021 16:07

Yes.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 03/05/2021 17:38

I'd like to celebrate my former SIL and her wife. They have been out and proud for many years and suffer daily homophobia from unpleasant neighbours.

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 03/05/2021 17:57

I'd like to celebrate my best friend from school. She's raising a little boy who's bright as a button. Star

TheWeeDonkey · 03/05/2021 18:04

I'd like to celebrate my namesake who has always been an inspiration to me and a total badass.

WoolOfBat · 03/05/2021 18:27

I also would like to celebrate Jodie Foster, I think she is an amazing actress!

UnkindlyMay · 03/05/2021 18:51

I’ll celebrate my friend’s sister and her wife, who very politely and courteously went against their religious upbringing and hellfire parents to become civil partners as soon as that became legal.

ArabellaScott · 03/05/2021 18:57

I'd like to celebrate a mentor who continues to inspire and move me, even though it's many years since she's passed on.
