Shout out to my fellow lesbians on this important week!

I will be wearing my lesbian pride badge right next to my trans pride badge for the whole week in all public spaces.

@yourhairiswinterfire

Identifying as a woman. That's it.

Oh Lawd. You can't define a word by using the actual word you're supposed to be defining to define it!

Well no one follows gender stereotypes anymore so there isn't much to it other than wanting to be called a woman and having she/her pronouns
cakedays · 29/04/2021 23:18

Okay Sugar: here's my 64 million dollar question about the whole thing.

Where do you believe "gender identity" is located? Is it a feeling in one's head, in which case how on earth does it exist since nobody can ever know what's in anyone else's head? (I don't know what it feels like to be a man, apart from some kind of imaginative projection of my own conjuring; because I can't literally experience anything else outside my own self.)

Or is gender identity it somewhere else? Is it a transcendent soul that exists on a spiritual plane, an essence that resides somewhere else in space? A religious belief? Is it part of a Jungian shared consciousness? Is it like a Platonic form, out there in an unchanging ideal reality? Where is it?

IAmFleshIAmBone · 29/04/2021 23:19

I thought female was a gender identity now? And that woman wasn't? Or have the genderists got their arguments mixed up? Postmodernism eh.

Erkrie · 29/04/2021 23:19

Identifying as a woman. That's it.

Lol

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/04/2021 23:19

Is Woman a gender identity then?

Yes

I think you're taking the piss. Very offensively, actually.

HamsterV2 · 29/04/2021 23:20

I've got a vagina, if anybody is interested.

I bought a knock-off one in Thailand. It's a bit like a cheap Rolex. It looks like the real deal but the insides don't work properly. My bf and I are happy with it though.

I'm certainly not precious about whether people ask if I'm pre or post op. I certainly don't consider it "offensive" when genitals come up in a discussion about biological men claiming they're lesbians or trying to colonise/appropriate lesbian culture or spaces.

I think it's perfectly relevant to the discussion tbh, and certainly not "bullying"

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/04/2021 23:20

Well no one follows gender stereotypes anymore so there isn't much to it other than wanting to be called a woman and having she/her pronouns

So there's only 2 questions on the check list then? You made it sound quite complex amd top secret

ASugarr · 29/04/2021 23:21

@GreyhoundG1rl

Is Woman a gender identity then?

Yes

I think you're taking the piss. Very offensively, actually.

Okay. Well I identify my gender as a woman (more specifically a cisgender woman) so.
CorvusPurpureus · 29/04/2021 23:22

there isn't much to it

There 'isn't much' to being a woman that we need to concern ourselves with, then?

Disgraceful.

You don't think that issues affecting women have 'much to them'?

& you have the utter witless effrontery to term yourself a feminist?!

NecessaryScene1 · 29/04/2021 23:22

I identify my gender as a woman

Why?

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/04/2021 23:22

Well no one follows gender stereotypes anymore so there isn't much to it other than wanting to be called a woman and having she/her pronouns

Well there we have it folks. The definition we've all been waiting for.
Nothing more to it than wanting to be called a woman and changing your pronouns Grin

I can't tell you what I really think of you, ASugarr, which is probably just as well. My keyboard would fucking melt.

yourhairiswinterfire · 29/04/2021 23:23

Is Woman a gender identity then

Yes

So the women in my family are at high risk of developing ovarian cancer because...of the...way we present?! Because we don't identify as men?

What if the men in my family identified as women, would they then be at risk of ovarian cancer?

Blibbyblobby · 29/04/2021 23:24

@ASugarr

Yes

See, that's what I thought as well. But @Shizuku, who is a woman, female and trans, says it isn't. So I'm really confused.

I don't want to get it wrong, and you two are both very clear how important trans-inclusive language is, so can you please clarify what exactly the word woman refers to when used about a person?

Helleofabore · 29/04/2021 23:24
Here's peachy yogurt with 'what is a lesbian'.
thank you for introducing me to Peachy Yogurt Arabella. What a character.
Scepticaltank · 29/04/2021 23:26

This having she/her pronouns thing is a bit tricky though? Where do I get them? Can I get them from Amazon? Do they come in a box?

NecessaryScene1 · 29/04/2021 23:26

But Shizuku, who is a woman, female and trans, says it isn't.

Good point. Sorry ASugarr, your gender can't be "woman" because Shizuku says that's not a gender. And Shizuku's in charge of genders on this thread, apparently.

Shizuku, sort her out.

HamsterV2 · 29/04/2021 23:27

This having she/her pronouns thing is a bit tricky though? Where do I get them? Can I get them from Amazon? Do they come in a box?

Yes they do. They come wrapped very well because in the wrong hands they can be EXTREMELY fragile if used incorrectly.

I bought a knock-off one in Thailand...

You win the thread, the Internet and just possibly the planet.

Stopthisnow · 29/04/2021 23:29

“You can't choose your identity - you can only notice what it is.”

A person can’t choose how someone else identifies them, if someone is a victim of a crime and says the perpetrator was a 6ft 5” white male wearing a sari, but that male “identifies” as a 5ft 2” Indian woman, it would be unhelpful and inaccurate to describe that person how they would like to be perceived by others, or how they perceive them self. The fact is we notice what people are and identify them in ways that correspond to material reality.

“If they have a female identity, they are trans women, and if they are attracted to other women, they are lesbians. Heterosexual mean are something else.”

Words need to be based on material reality otherwise humans cannot communicate effectively, when someone invents an ideology that proposes words include their exact opposite in the definition, e.g. white can include black, female can include male, homosexual can include heterosexual, etc., then the words black, female and homosexual lose their original meaning. It becomes a nonsense, a white person who identifies as a black person is still really a white person in reality, a male who identifies as a female is still a male in reality, and a heterosexual male who identifies as a homosexual female (lesbian) is still a heterosexual male in reality. Some may believe they are being “kind” or “polite” by going along with a person’s claimed self identity, others will refuse as they consider it racist, sexist and homophobic and find it deeply offensive. I am one of those people who will not go along with it as I find it deeply offensive. Male’s who identify as women, females or lesbians are as sexist and homophobic as a white person who identifies as a black person is racist, in my opinion. Both are members of the privileged class trying to identify as a member of the disadvantaged class, and both are equally offensive to the people whose material realities they are appropriating. A boundary is a line that distinguishes one thing from another, as well as a line that must not be crossed, males who insist on identifying as women, females and lesbians are not respecting our boundaries. Males need to learn to accept and respect female’s and lesbian’s boundaries.

That's fine. And like I've said this whole time, people are allowed to do and think what they want. I'm totally on board with @Shizuku and everything she's said. I may not define myself in the same way, but no human being does. We are all different and there's nothing wrong with that. Night all 🤍

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/04/2021 23:30

This isn't really going anywhere. The discussion is going in circles and we can have this argument on any thread.

To take this back to the original topic of Lesbian Visibility, here is a lovely quote from Gertrude Stein about meeting Alice B. Toklas.

Stein met her life partner Alice B. Toklas on September 8, 1907, on Toklas' first day in Paris, at Sarah and Michael Stein's apartment. On meeting Stein, Toklas wrote:

“She was a golden brown presence, burned by the Tuscan sun and with a golden glint in her warm brown hair. She was dressed in a warm brown corduroy suit. She wore a large round coral brooch and when she talked, very little, or laughed, a good deal, I thought her voice came from this brooch. It was unlike anyone else's voice-- deep, full, velvety, like a great contralto's, like two voices.”

Isn't that beautiful? Can't you feel the love in those words?

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/04/2021 23:31

And like I've said this whole time, people are allowed to do and think what they want
You can't possibly believe that.

Clearly not. Did the memo get lost in the post?
