Pronouns on BBC?

Watching Glow Up on iplayer and every time they show a contestants name on the screen their pronoun is included in brackets. I don't watch a lot of current TV, is this a proper "thing" now or just this one program?

Not that I'm aware of, not that that means anything.

I think this is the appropriate response to use of pronouns.

I noticed this onGlow Up - to be honest I'm fed up with the BBC pushing all this. Normalising forced pronouns (did the contestants get a free choice?); putting drag on to every show (strictly etc) and spending money making and promoting Drag Race. Plus the bias in the news thanks to their LGBTQ++ rep.

I used to really support the licence fee but now I resent paying to support this bollocks

Name change in honour of the Queen of queen cats.

Yes to the shoehorning of drag into everything. Was watching a BBC2 programme, 'All That Glitters' (basically Bake Off for jewellery making) which proclaimed that next week, they will be designing jewellery for drag artists. Even DH rolled his eyes at that one.

Possibly why pronouns were declared?

I’m not altogether sure how this is “inclusive” if all the other contestants use masculine or feminine pronouns.

ASugarr · 21/04/2021 21:09

Maybe because they want to? Many people actually like declaring their pronouns as it helps people to not be misgendered.

Chrysanthemum5 · 21/04/2021 21:13

@WhereYouLeftIt yes I watched All that glitters and noticed next week is about drag queens. Do they ever ask the female contestants how they feel about this?

I saw this earlier. Loved the cat's eye roll at the end!

LostToucan · 21/04/2021 21:18

Who would be misgendering on a TV show?

Presumably the production team know the contestants and would use their preferred pronouns, and viewers will just think that’s Bill or Jane or whatever.

Probably more to do with the audience and others not misgendering. And it's become quite a common thing to do so it doesn't surprise me. Kinda like this addition. Makes me actually want a TV license

I think it is unsafe around cats.

I saw that, I thought it's another reason to not watch it (other than presenter annoying and judges dour and humourless).

The audience is sitting in their homes, surely? How will anyone know if they “misgender” someone? Grin

Mewmin · 21/04/2021 21:49

If someone is transgender don't they change their name to their chosen gender? If someone is calling themselves Ruth does it need to be spelt out that they would use she/her pronouns? Why would someone called Ruth want to be called Ruth but use he/him pronouns? It doesn't make sense to me.

On social media, news outlets and stuff. It's pretty common for people to say their preferred pronouns. And it doesn't harm anyone. So let them do what they want.
LostToucan · 21/04/2021 21:50

I did wonder about that too. If there’s someone on TV where I’m not sure how they identify I always apply the “they /them” label.

Firstly, it's not just trans people who use preferred pronouns. Secondly, no they don't have to. Most commonly they would but many don't.
