Pronouns on BBC?

Watching Glow Up on iplayer and every time they show a contestants name on the screen their pronoun is included in brackets. I don't watch a lot of current TV, is this a proper "thing" now or just this one program?

If its so offensive to be referred to (in your absence) as "she" why is it not equally as offensive to have people called you an obviously feminine name like Ruth?

It has just all become so ridiculous and I can't understand why the majority seem to go along with it. The need for the public announcement of pronouns feels like an attempt to force others to validate the person's gender identity. Why are we all supposed to care so much? Can't people just get on with it without demanding the rest of the world affirming their belief?

It isn't a belief. It's literally the same as announcing your name or age. It's just to clarify and be polite.

Many people don't care about femininity and masculinity. Trans people included. Being feminine doesn't mean someone must be female and vice versa.

What does it charity?

And I haven’t announced my age since I was about six years old.

Huh? What is gender identity about if not masculinity and femininity? I am seriously confused now.

It clarifies who they are. It's okay if you don't get it. you don't have to. Just be respectful.

Gender identity has nothing to do with femininity or masculinity. That's expression. Not how someone identifies.

Why is cisgender an affront?

Because a woman is an adult human female and there doesn’t need to be an artificially created subset of “woman”?

Is Ruth a "feminine" name?
I've heard of people being called James for example which is traditionally a "boys" name.
You can get unisex names.
Not sure what names have to do with whether someone is trans or not.

@Quaagars it's an external belief system that is being pushed onto people who don't hold the same beliefs, on the assumption that they do or ought to. No thanks. I don't identify with the set of sex based stereotypes that have been decided by the culture I live in. I'm an adult human with a personality who happens to be female, so woman is the only term that's needed.

It’s not that I “don’t get it”.

It’s that what you’re saying isn’t clear.

What do you mean when you say “who they are”?

It's how they want to be identified. Just like giving your name to someone instead of them assuming your name by your appearance or something.

Please could you explain this. What do you mean by expression? Expression of your identity or something else? What is gender identity then?

I just can't get my head around why the slight chance someone is misgendered demands a complete shift in societal norms.

I don't announce my age, and I have a name that can be shortened in a variety of ways, new colleagues often ask how I like to be referred as, I generally shrug my shoulders and reply that I don't mind and will even reply to 'Hey, you' As long as they don't go 'Hey B%^&*' I'm generally ok with what ever they say.

Maybe I just work with a strangely wonderful set of people.

Your gender is just if you are a man, woman or non binary. Gender expression is if you are stereotypically feminine or Masculine. You don't have to be masculine to be a man and vice versa.

@Quaagars

I'm not cisgender, I'm a woman. And I resent a publicly funded service trying to normalise this kind of shit

I used to think like this. as in not liking the word c** (thanks to MN)
Seriously, now though I think on reading other viewpoints, why is me being c** (starred out as know people don't like that word on here) an affront?
I'm still a woman, will never stop being so - just because there's trans women existing doesn't make me any less of one.

Well, why didn't you like the word before? You've apparently changed your mind but you must recall why you thought what you thought before. I assume it isn't just 'because someone on MN said so'.

If you actually do consider yourself to have a feminine gender identity, then crack on with being cis. Most of us on FWR think gender is regressive stereotypical bollocks, though, and that it isn't what makes someone a woman.

Same as why should billions of women now have to be called cis because of a few who resent the need for the word trans before woman? Why are their wants and wishes the most important? What about the rest of us that do not wish to change our label, or be made to explain our pronouns completely unnecessarily?

When you sayI’ “how they want to be identified”, do you mean how they want to compel people to speak about them in their absence?

And how on earth would someone assume someone’s name by their appearance?

The whole reason people use the term cisgendered is because people get so upset calling trans women as women. If people didn't make it an issue then we can all just be called women.

Why can't they just be called transwomen and natal women called women? Why is that so offensive?

What's your name or your age got to do with anything - that's surely nothing to do with whether you're trans or not
