I just came out as GC at work, to the big boss and I feel a bit sick

I have NCed for this. I have just outed myself as GC in work to the big boss (and some others cced in).

I was asked to sign off on something that I just couldn't and I said so, and explained why.

I literally feel sick. Like I have put a big fat GC target on my back. My org is totally woke. I wonder how many times my response has been forwarded already.

@Franklyfrost honestly it's not something to be proud of.

Well done OP.

WallaceinAnderland · 15/04/2021 18:18

Which of the following is most likely to get the right people to the right service:

  1. Für Menschen mit Einem Gebärmutterhals

  2. Für Frauen

?

Well done OP, it's massively important to speak out. Thank you.

Xenia · 15/04/2021 18:18

It means General Counsel to me.... anyway I looked it up.

So telling people they are being silly to imply it is not just women who menstruate and that kind of thing? Yes well done. I don't think it has to be a big thing and people go into a pro or con box on these things. Just say have you thought about using these materials as they suggest it is not teenage girls who menstruate? What about using these materials instead which make that clear but also deal with the fact a tiny number of people are trans?

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 15/04/2021 18:18

cor, another red guard member declaring themselves

but they never explain precisely what they'd be 'reporting' people for, as if wrong think is self evidently a reportable offence

Gotta love a German compound noun!

I’d be reporting such behaviour for further education and disciplinary action. I reported similar behaviour relatively recently and it was handled very well. I don’t think you have anything to be proud of here and I hope any decent work place will remind you of company policy and/or professional behaviour

Am I the only person who is curious to know:

  1. what further education? What was the content, who delivered it, and who assessed whether the 'correct' information was absorbed?
  2. what disciplinary action happened? Formal warning? Job loss? Suspension and enquiry?
  3. what does "handled well" mean wrt to the ourcomes and 1 and 2 above?
  4. what is the company policy and professional behaviour expectation in play here?
Wishitsnows · 15/04/2021 18:27

Well done op

JustcameoutGC · 15/04/2021 18:27

I suspect I should not look up Gebarmutterhals on my work laptop

Datun · 15/04/2021 18:27

I'd also like to know how these distractors imagine women are discriminated against? Is it usually on the basis that they menstruate ? What if they don't?

Is it usually on the basis that they are breastfeeding? what if they don't?

Or have a cervix? Or a birthing body?

Women are discriminated against, because they are women. They are 'lesser than'.

The relentless categorisation of women based on separate bodily functions obscures the fact it's because they are thought lesser of as a sex.

It might be based on fertility, sexual access, and the need to control procreation, but nonetheless, they are identified by the fact that they are women.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 15/04/2021 18:28

Brilliant work OP, congratulations!

Igneococcus · 15/04/2021 18:30

Gebärmutterhals is more obviously female than cervix containing the words "birth" and "mother".

JustcameoutGC · 15/04/2021 18:31

Languages were never my strong point..

It's just cervix. But it's actually a word that totally threw me for a loop when I was ploughing through some progressive German newspaper a few months back. I had to fetch a dictionary to work out that it meant... women.
G5000 · 15/04/2021 18:32

So OP points out that the company has to take into account that some people in the target group of the services will have problems understanding the message. And she now needs to be disciplined and re-educated?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/04/2021 18:38

@AvocadoBathroom

It's going to be interesting when the sunlight hits and more women understand what is going on - the backlash is inevitable. Lawsuits unavoidable. And those who let it happen, held accountable. It's just a matter of time now.
I agree - but a lot of very vulnerable women and children are going to suffer dreadfully before it does.

It's hideous and heartbreaking. Lives will be wrecked (even more lives) and many, if not most, will never recover.

They have about 36 pronouns, too! get that lot in your 'preferred pronouns" space in your bios!

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

You asked what you might find at work. For example, I recently was directed to an intranet page on bullying and discrimination listing all the protected characteristics and pointing to support groups etc. However, it wasn’t all, as it excluded sex. I’ve pointed it out - no reply so far, despite chasing.

Igneococcus · 15/04/2021 18:49

"They have about 36 pronouns, too! get that lot in your 'preferred pronouns" space in your bios!"

You need to check out the pronouns in Hadza, makes Germans look like a bunch of amateurs.

Leafstamp · 15/04/2021 18:53

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

Well done, OP.

Could I ask the posters on this thread who are up on this, what sort of things would I be looking for in our company policies that would contravene GC thinking? We have the usual suite but to my reading, they're non-descript and have probably been lifted from any other generic policy

Just highlighting this for you Lying, in the hope that others can help.

I would say start with a search (ctrl +F) for the term “gender” and see if they actually should be using “sex”. Remember sex is the protected characteristic under the Equalities Act.

Check what definitions are being used.

This is just one example. You might find some useful info here:

@Franklyfrost

Being as quite a lot of people have explained what is wrong with the position sweetpetrichor has taken, do you to reply to the points made and explain how there is no harm caused by removing the word women and references to biological sex in health communications?
