Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Has the big question been put to AIBU ?

GNCQ · 11/04/2021 21:36

So, the word woman

I don't want to do a thread in AIBU if it's already been done before. I take long breaks from MN so often miss stuff.

Has there been a vote on opinions about the word woman? Basically - Is it based on your personality/gender for anyone to use, or is it sex based intended for adult human females, with an AIBU choice voting enabled.

Has this already been done?
Would I be mad to start such a thread?
Would it get me banned?

Please advise xx

It has definitely been done, I'm not sure what the title of the thread was. I think there was a recent one about most people not having a gender identity. Results were resoundingly YANBU.

NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 22:23

There have been a few and the answer is always the same. Vast majority saying

Not cis.
Words woman girl refer to sex

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 11/04/2021 22:31

I think it was 90%+

MsFogi · 11/04/2021 22:34

Doesn't do any harm to run the poll regularly though - just in case women have changed their mind about the importance of biology. Just make sure the wording of the question is crystal clear.

Pinchoftums · 11/04/2021 22:37

I would say The Big Question is "do we have equality?"

Because a fuck lot of women (and even more men) believe we do.

Your question is a big question too.

Hey Rufus, you should be on www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4216364-Just-when-you-think-you-ve-heard-it-all. They’ve got beavers, a pony, a badger, a sloth but so far no reindeer Grin

Can only help the awareness building, putting up an AIBU like what you have suggested. Even if similar done recently... Some people only pop on occasionally

NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 23:11

I think that the general MN posters have had enough of being asked this so it might be counter productive!

I think more of us need to start having these conversations in real life. Rather than on an anonymous internet forum.

I thought people would think I was being bigoted discussing gender critical feminism. But turns out most of them agree with me!

Many are scared to mention it at work or in front of certain people.
But the more we talk about it, the more decision makers will have to take reality into account.

Let's do this!! ✊🏻✊✊🏼✊🏾

This is my pact for 2021.

Let’s do this indeed.

A woman is someone who identifies as a woman.

A woman is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a woman.

A woman is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a woman.

A woman is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a woman.

I could go on, but hopefully you have all now understood that the word woman is not about sex but about gender identity.

Simples.

Faffertea · 12/04/2021 08:12

A squirgle is someone who identifies as a squirgle

A squirgle is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a squirgle.

A squirgle is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a squirgle.

A squirgle is someone who identifies as someone who identifies as someone who identifies as a squirgle.

Now you all know what a squirgle is. Simples.

Signalbox · 12/04/2021 08:13

So female people without a gender identity aren't women?

Faffertea · 12/04/2021 08:15

Nellodee

I read your post thinking it was satire but it would appear not. Based on my post, can you tell me how you’d recognise a squirgle? Or perhaps create a law to protect the rights of squirgles based on my definition?

Signalbox · 12/04/2021 08:17

Sorry Faffertea it's too early in the morning for me. I thought your post said woman and you were being serious Grin

Nellodee · 12/04/2021 08:19

It was meant as a demonstration of why using a circular definition of the word woman is meaningless. We often talk about it being a circular definition, but I just found it pleasing and ridiculous to list out a few iterations of the recursion (I repeated myself, though - not enough coffee).

It’s a measure of how preposterous some of the twaw arguments are that it has become difficult to separate genuine from humorous posts.

Nellodee · 12/04/2021 08:20

That literally is the twaw definition though, isn’t it?

Signalbox · 12/04/2021 08:22

This is a mini demonstration of when you change the meanings of words nobody know what anyone else is talking about anymore or even whether they are being serious or taking the piss.

Nellodee · 12/04/2021 08:27

Yep, Signalbox, that’s it entirely. The word woman now has absolutely no defining characteristics but somehow people are still able to identify as one. All they need to do is dive into the circular whirlpool of self definition (which may or may not be located somewhere up their own arsehole).

Miltonma · 12/04/2021 08:28

Hello

I haven't posted here before. In fact I was too scared! Ironically I heard about the trans debate from my boyfriend who is very against the loss of womens rights and taught me the difference between sex and gender as well as what the office of national statistics and stonewall tried to push through before the brilliant court challenge. He hates stonewall for the heavy handed political bullying they've done.

Let me think about how I want to write the question and I'll come back to you to ask you to fact check before I post it.

Do note I am unlikely to be as pro some of the arguments as some of you but I will post from my own view as I can't have been the only relatively educafed woman who had no idea about this.

Of course if someone wants to post earlier then go ahead. I have lots going on at the moment so will probably take a couple of weeks.

OolieMacdoolie · 12/04/2021 08:31

It has been done approximately 52904 times before. Please resist the temptation.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/04/2021 08:38

And yet we still quake at the thought of having that conversation in real life.

Wonder why?
