Pregnant people?

Trustisamust · 11/04/2021 03:12

So our local NHS Trust have finally updated their guidance re allowing partners to attend pregnancy scans etc.
They now refer to pregnant people, not pregnant women.
I don't know if I am being unreasonable here but this does not sit comfortably with me?

Actually, when I called 999 they did ask me if the patient was male or female. Unfortunately I couldn't tell them as I didn't like to presume...

Erkrie · 11/04/2021 18:46

Again. Them being transgender will be on their medical record and many trans people are open with medical professionals about their biological sex.

It didn't help the transman who didn't tell staff, they was listed as a man when they went to hospital for abdo pain, and subsequently had a miscarriage.

If you are unsure you just say you are unsure. You can give an assumption that's fine. People do that with age and race. In an emergency it isn't an issue.

Indeed, and according to ASugarr we can't possibly tell someone's sex just by looking at them, and one must never assume the hidden, known only to the individual person, undefined gender identity as that would be literally killing them, much better to have an actual death than risk the crime of misgendering.
NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 18:47

Do they ask for race when you call 999 I'm a medical emergency?

Erkrie · 11/04/2021 18:48

I think they did actually.

You really do talk arrant nonsense, it would be amusing if it wasn't so dangerous.

Absolutely. Far more important.

ASugarr · 11/04/2021 18:50

You can't always tell. If it is an emergency then it is best to make assumption. However outside of that it isn't okay to assume.

Whats nonsense about it?
Whatwouldscullydo · 11/04/2021 18:50

Last time I called an ambulance they did ask age. You can give an estimate

Well I hope you would say female if you knew they were a transwoman, because I have been told that is the correct term.

It will make a mockery of any blood tests and trying to work out what the problem is but hey, at least you wouldn’t be transphobic.

ScrollingLeaves · 11/04/2021 18:51

Apropos of ‘chest feeding’, don’t males have breasts too? I think that men can get breast cancer sometimes and I doubt it would be called ‘chest’ cancer.

Do you not think it was an issue for the transman who miscarried?

NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 18:54

Yes they do get breast cancer.

And yes it is called breast cancer.

Erkrie · 11/04/2021 18:54

Hmm, well, I guess I could make an assumption as A sugar suggests. I mean if someone is wearing trousers then they're probably a man right. And if they have a string of pearls and big hoop earrings then they'll definitely be female.

NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 18:56

The NHS guidance (from a while back, may have changed) says that if a person can't tell you they should go on a ward according to their gender presentation.

Yes I do which is why it is important to normalise that some men are born female and stop them from feeling insecure from people knowing they are transgender.

Over the internet it is incredibly difficult to do. But I have helped numerous people with their gender identity in person. We have a set of questions (not gender expression based) and go through the steps from there. But as part of confidentiality I can't discuss the full questionare and process on here. Best thing to do is to always sign post them to a sexual health professional to discuss it in full detail

Numerous posters including me have asked you how you, or they, know what their 'gender identity ' is given that most of us have no idea as we don't 'identify ' as women, we ARE women. Gender Identity implies that there is something describable called 'woman' which can be identified with. Just like if I said I identified as being 'left wing' I could describe for you what that meant.

You have strenuously avoided any definition or description of this mysterious 'woman gender identity ' and now claim that it can be diagnosed but you can't tell us how.

You can of course tell us what the questions are - confidentiality is in what the answers are for an individual. And having administered this questionnaire you should be able to say in general terms at least how you know someone has a woman, man or non binary gender identity. While this all remains a mystery we shall have to assume it doesn't exist.

BaseDrops · 11/04/2021 18:59

Men do get breast cancer. Presumably that’s only cis men, do transmen get chest cancer?. Or is it only referred to as chest if a transman is doing something that is a function of female biology? Because I have read about induced lactation in transwomen and it was so they could breast feed. The regime required to induce lactation does make the drug content of the fluid produced very different from inducing lactation in a woman. I don’t know if this has been properly checked for safety.

NiceGerbil · 11/04/2021 18:59

Some trans people id as cis, female, male, anyway

Haha whatever. As long as you are reporting the emergency, I don't really care how you judge others. It's not rocket science to know what to do in an emergency. Again, I tell many people to have a medical ID on their phone or have their identification with them where possible so people can help more efficiently however if the person in danger doesn't have them, the best thing to do is to call 999 and answer the questions the best you can.

Again you will have to speak with a sexual health specialist who can give further information on that as I am not permitted to do so. Even though I am anonymous I don't wish to get into trouble for disclosing anything that I wouldn't even if you knew who I was so I can't. But others might have lesser restrictions depending on who they work for. Or even better, you could ask a transgender person to explain it for you.
RedDogsBeg · 11/04/2021 19:05

This is typical of the arrant nonsense you post:

Yes I do which is why it is important to normalise that some men are born female and stop them from feeling insecure from people knowing they are transgender

A statement that is completely contradictory.

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/04/2021 19:05

You don't honestly think they'd assume you were crazy if it turned out in said emergency the patient was not obscured by a hedge or wedged in a car to the point only feet were visible and therefore genuinely unidentifiable, but right there in front of you and very clearly a man or woman. You don't think that they'd think you were a complete twit for not giving them that information....
