I am LIVID!!! New technical guidance has been released.
www.education.ie/en/School-Design/Technical-Guidance-Documents/Current-Technical-Guidance/sdg-02-06-sanitary-facilities-april-2021-.pdf

All mixed sex. Hand basin outside the WC (WAH your bloody hands in front of boys). Doors down to the floor (any one else see an issue in a mixed sex school with mixed sex toilets with this set up)

What the were the department thinking?!!!

But for primary schools I absolutely don't see any problem.

For younger ones I agree. But primary schools also have older kids - up to 12 I think in Ireland and it's entirely inappropriate for 11 and 12 year old girls to use the same toilets as the boys in their class.

But I don't really think that there's a point to fight against.

I don't think anyone's fighting about little kids using the same loo ffs. It's older kids and teenagers having to people are protesting about. Way to dismiss people's safety concerns Hmm

@Mountainmama29

Oh C'mon I don't think that there are safety concerns needed if 11 or 12yr old kids use the same facility to go bathroom (privately in a fully separated stall).
Did you even bother to look at the diagram in the opening post? You know, the one with sinks in a separate area? And that fact that this applies to secondary schools? Do you not see any problems with teenage girls changing sanitary towels and having to bloody wash hands in front of boys? With having a bunch of boys sniggering as they listen outside the door? Hmm

All my sons finished primary/junior school aged 12. In Ireland junior school is 8 years long. You must start between the ages of 4 and 6 unless there are special needs.

Where is the San pro dispenser, is it in the communal area?

This detail isn’t in the Guide

That's interesting. I am drafting a letter and hopefully will submit it next week.

@titchy

When they get older (let's say grade 4 or 5) it's OK to separate the genders but at young age I don't think that this is needed. So I don't understand this agitation and this massive fight against that.

All you had to do was read the thread title: primary AND SECONDARY schools. Teenagers.

And they could consider how an 11 (or 10 or 9) year old girl feels starting her period and having to manage it in a bathroom shared with boys of that age.
UppityPuppity · 04/06/2021 16:55

In the UK it’s separate provision from aged 8 for a reason.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 04/06/2021 17:55

I'm guessing Mountainmama29 is in the US as they use the term 'grade 4 or 5' which isn't applicable in Ireland.

Oddly enough my now adult dd who went to school in Dublin was talking about when her period started. Nearly all the girls in her class got their first period in the last year of primary school.

If they want unisex toilets I don’t understand why they don’t have loads of fully enclosed cubicles (where toilet and sink and bins are all in one area). Rather than a toilet area that is unisex but affords no privacy
