Is this ok for my email pronouns

ohhmyown · 25/03/2021 12:37

My company has an auto filed message under our email signatures

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect that my pronouns are ... ( I fill this)

I want to put.... Myname. Which is obviously female as Its a classic British name, but often clients I deal with in the EMEA areas write to me as my surname or Mr surname, just assuming I'm a man and you know what I just don't care. I don't want to write she/ they/ that/ wear a hat.

'Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect that my pronouns are always at the forefront of my mind'

I would just put sex-based.
It doesn't need to indicate what yours are, if you’re happy for clients to continue addressing you by your surname, then they’re speaking to you, not about you.

sometimes I'm tempted to turn up on zoom meetings with all the protected characteristics listed out and then be disapproving at people who dont show their support to me by listing all of theirs

why is it gender which isnt even a protected characteristic the only one that matters?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 26/03/2021 11:41

I wonder why they have this - so assume everyone does this - and yet my dead contacts have footers that explain how best to communicate with them. This is actually useful. Or maybe we ought to bite if we have dyslexia, sight problems, comprehension issues (I need that - ‘sorry I’m not technical so please don’t ask me for support issues’).

Yogyakarta Principle 6 is that its ok for you to offer your pronouns but not insist someone else gives theirs.

''The Right to Privacy
Everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is entitled to the enjoyment of privacy without arbitrary or unlawful interference... The right to privacy ordinarily includes the choice to disclose or not to disclose information relating to one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.''

I’d ask why the company is not “inclusive” enough to respect that not everyone wishes to highlight their pronouns. Is this discrimination?

HollowTalk · 26/03/2021 12:49

@Miaowse

Could HR be persuaded to offer staff a choice of signature:

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect preferred pronouns where stated.

Or

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect preferred pronouns. My preferred pronouns are (insert preferred pronouns).

This shows the company respects preferred pronouns without putting pressure on anyone who may feel uncomfortable about declaring pronouns for whatever reason.

This is perfect.

I’m sorry, this is one typo that’s just too good to pass up. Choices of Ouija board, medium or guided writing?

WeAreAllCompletelyFine · 26/03/2021 13:09

I love

'sex-based, like my oppression'

That's what I'll put if I'm ever asked Grin

DropDTuning · 26/03/2021 13:14

For those who don't see a problem with this,

I hope that they'll also be fine with declaring their religion, height, weight, sexual orientation, dietary preferences, age, income, marital status and disabilities in every single email.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 26/03/2021 13:48

@Miaowse sensible enough response if there has to be something.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/03/2021 13:53

I'd put

M preferred pronouns are - 'Whatever seems most reasonable to you, I won't be offended whatever you use'

DropDTuning · 26/03/2021 13:56

Luckily I am self-employed, but a lot of people in my industry do the pronoun thing.

If I was made to do it I would also want to list my patron saint, preferred make of car, favourite rugby team and best Diary of a Wimpy Kid book.

I'm an atheist who doesn't drive and has never sat through a game of rugby.

SavedDownTheWell · 26/03/2021 17:10

"Dear Manager,

I will not be doing this for reasons that are personal and would appreciate if you would now stop pressing this issue.

I agree it looks messy incomplete so suggest it be permanently removed from my automatic signature.

Kindest of regards

Ohhmyown"

But you do like wimpy kid :)

Prefer not to say.

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 26/03/2021 21:41

A doctorate doesn't change a person's pronouns.

tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 26/03/2021 23:01

"you/your" (it doesn't specify third person pronouns)

DropDTuning · 27/03/2021 11:33

@StealthPolarBear
But you do like wimpy kid smile

No, I hate that too!

Miaowse · 31/03/2021 14:49

@ohhmyown I was thinking of this thread today as I received lots of emails with pronouns in the signature - I wonder if they were inserted by choice.

ohhmyown · 31/03/2021 17:16

I've done it .. I've gone with

XcompanyX asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect that my pronouns are undistinguished, so please use my first name Ohhmy.

I also asked my so PC boss if I could change my email to a neutral name. I have a neutral nick name my Dad always uses with me. But my Boss said I have to have my name I used to join the company and if I keep shit stirring he'll sign me up for all the course HR offer including becoming the dept mental health champion more work for free WinkGrin. --

I don't think HR or IT are ready for someone who generally doesn't want to go by their passport name due to gender ID. This is what makes it a joke really. He has however accepted my footer, as says he couldn't care less what I write as long as I did it and now HR are off his case.
