Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

Oh yes just be good to me. I always think that, I realise yiure a bit of a shit but things are OK at the moment. Maybe your previous girlfriends didn't understand you.
Oh. I always though the “other girls” were concurrent.
StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:07

I ge uinely thought it was about leaving the gate open and the dogs escaping Blush

@Deliriumoftheendless

“ When your body's had enough of me And I'm layin' flat out on the floor When you think I've loved you all I can I'm gonna love you a little bit more”

No you’re fucking not, mate.

@Spidder

In contrast, does anyone know that other country song about the woman called in to the pta cos her clothes are inappropriate? But she turns it round in the last verse and calls out their hypocrisy.
Jeanie Riley - Harper Valley PTA.

Reminds me of 1968 Dolly Parton classic in which she addressed double standards women face with, Just Because I’m A Woman which was an anti-slut shaming anthem before “slut-shaming” was recognised as a mainstream phenomenon.

Spidder · 20/03/2021 21:09

creamcrackers that's the one! I love a good narrative in a song anyway, but I love the big 'fuck you!' That comes at the end.

I have a secret penchant for a bit of cock rock. Lots of v unfeminist lyrics to sing along to, until you get to the nice, naval gazing, grunge years.

SheikahSlate · 20/03/2021 21:09

I've always found Coldplay's 'Fix You' incredibly creepy. I get weird vibes from it.

EasterGuineaPig · 20/03/2021 21:09

@StealthPolarBear

Blurred lines was overtly awful. So it had that going for it. It was out when my dc were young primary school aged and played at school parties. Urgh.
Will never forget my DH’s elderly grandparents dancing to this at a family wedding Shock

The beautiful ‘Smack that’ by Akon is definitely not a feminist anthem.

Toseland · 20/03/2021 21:09

‘Girls’ by the Beastie boys - terrible terrible lyrics, rockin’ tune.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:10

Ooh fantastic.
Didn't dolly also adapt it for the vaccine vaccine recently? She is brilliant.
Though she did pinch that idea from me, with my windolene, windole...ene tune. I don't care she sang it first.

Another fan of Jolene here. 😁

Don't You Want Me by Human League. Love the song, really catchy but oh he is so disparaging of her.

DaysAreGettingLongerNow · 20/03/2021 21:11

@Nitpickpicnic

Surely ‘Who let the dogs out’ takes the medal?

I wish someone would come up with a catchy tune about actual canines, for all the radio and tv producers to use whenever there’s a segment relating to doggies. I can’t tell if they don’t know the meaning behind WLTDO, or do know and don’t care. Both are depressing.

I get very stabby when it’s played, or when I hear little kids singing it.

Think I’ll start composing a contra-version ‘Who invited all these micropenis guys to the party?’ in my head next time.

I thought it was the other way around, that the badly-behaved men were the ‘dogs’ and a woman called them out on it?
StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:11

If we're going for overtly awful, smack my bitch up by prodigy fits the bill.
What on earth were they thinking??

@Serenster

I've Been to Paradise, but I've Never Been to Me is terrible: travelling the world and having amazing life experiences counts for nothing besides being a housewife and mother Hmm
I don't know. It's pretty mawkish obviously, but it reminds me a lot of the part in, I think it's Anne of Avonlea, where the Miss Stacey tells Marilla that it has taken her all these years and travels and such to realise that she was in the best place where she started.

I think it's about realising that all those experiences aren't what make you who you are, and maybe aren't as lasting as a deep sense of place and a family.

I don't expect everyone will agree with the sentiment, but it's a bit different to call it anti-feminist. Feminism doesn't have to be about atomic individualism.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:12

Human league: but she comes right back and tells him where to stick his smug self-satisfiedness

Delilah
This. Great to sing along to, really catchy tune, but yikes the sentiment!

Yes, and I'm sure they tried to disingenuously pass it off as ironic too, of course.
SmokedDuck · 20/03/2021 21:14

@Bordois

All I want to do is make love to you (so I can get up the duff but I'm actually with someone else so k thx bye)

Oh, and the Pina Colada song. But its soo catchy

I always found this one weird - lots of the others are meant to be "bad love" kinds of scenarios, but people always think that one is romantic!
RedDogsBeg · 20/03/2021 21:14

I love a bit of Led Zeppelin 'Whole Lotta Love', but no you are not going to be my back door man even if you are Robert Plant!

HeartshapedFox · 20/03/2021 21:15

As a teenager I remember being pretty shocked when Courtney Love covered “He hit me (and it felt like a kiss)” by the Crystals:
“ If he didn't care for me
I could have never made him mad
But he hit me,
And I was glad.”
Surely the ultimate anti-feminist anthem?

Tal45 · 20/03/2021 21:15

I always cringe at that Pitbull one that goes 'give me everything tonight, we might not get tomorrow, let's do it tonight'. It just makes me imagine some sleazy bloke in a club singing it to someone in an attempt to persuade them that having a one night stand with him would be a great idea - just in case you both drop dead tomorrow.

AntigoneLost · 20/03/2021 21:16

Wives and Lovers must be pretty much up there in terms of anti-feminism

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 21:18

Constant Cravings by country/pop musician/singer KD Lang !

I really like the song !

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/03/2021 21:18

This was written as a response to Jolene, from the OW's pov

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:19

I like that one. Never listened to the lyrics well enough to see that there's anything wrong. I'm guessing the cravings are for a woman rather than cadbury dairy milk?
