Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

And you'd better run girl you're much too young girl, you had me believe you're old enough to give me love....grim and it still sometimes gets played (on radio 2)

minipie · 20/03/2021 20:56

Dub be good to me

Lyrics include “I don’t care about your other girls” and “I won’t tie you down, when you need me, I’ll be around”

Similar to You don’t have to say you love me

thepetrellies · 20/03/2021 20:57

I nominate 'Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town', popularised by Kenny Rogers. In it a crippled war veteran fantasies about putting his unfaithful wife ‘in the ground’.

Spidder · 20/03/2021 20:58

In contrast, does anyone know that other country song about the woman called in to the pta cos her clothes are inappropriate? But she turns it round in the last verse and calls out their hypocrisy.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 20:58

Eek!

The Beautiful South- don't marry her.
I hate it so much!

VeganSven · 20/03/2021 20:58

What about Blurred Lines-that is awful!

I like more than words, but never interpreted it that way 🤷‍♀️

The you don’t know you’re beautiful one was 1DirectionGrin

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 20:59

Ah yes I don't like that one anyway but the lyrics are awful. If you maymrry her you'll have a mundane life of putting the bins out and reading the papers.

@Nitpickpicnic

Surely ‘Who let the dogs out’ takes the medal?

I wish someone would come up with a catchy tune about actual canines, for all the radio and tv producers to use whenever there’s a segment relating to doggies. I can’t tell if they don’t know the meaning behind WLTDO, or do know and don’t care. Both are depressing.

I get very stabby when it’s played, or when I hear little kids singing it.

Think I’ll start composing a contra-version ‘Who invited all these micropenis guys to the party?’ in my head next time.

The puppy song,

But we would stay away from crowds
With signs that said "No dogs allowed”

And

Love me, love my dog

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 20/03/2021 21:00

"Hit me baby one more time" is just absolutely the worst lyric ever. I really felt upset when I once heard my DD then aged around 10 singing it.

Pyewackect · 20/03/2021 21:00

Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby !. I've got the moves too.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:00

Blurred lines was overtly awful. So it had that going for it. It was out when my dc were young primary school aged and played at school parties. Urgh.

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 20/03/2021 21:00

Oh yes, and Blurred Lines

ChequerBoard · 20/03/2021 21:01

Has no-one mentioned the vile 'Young Girl' by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap?

Filled with such nuggets as 'Young girl, get out of my mind, my love for you is way out of line'

Followed up with 'Better run girl, you're much too young girl'

Bleurgh, what a great example of victim blamingConfused

minipie · 20/03/2021 21:01

Oh a really bad one “In The Summertime”

As well as “have a drink, have a drive” it also contains the following:

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel

Niiiiice

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/03/2021 21:01

I've said before on here that I credit my feminist awakening age about 5 to Soldier Soldier. She goes and gets him all this stuff of her grandfather's on the basis that he will marry her, and he's already married, the fucker.

Bordois · 20/03/2021 21:02

All I want to do is make love to you (so I can get up the duff but I'm actually with someone else so k thx bye)

Oh, and the Pina Colada song. But its soo catchy

boireannach · 20/03/2021 21:02

Hey Girl Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. I was a teenager at the time and it gave me the boke 🤭

Notthecarwashagain · 20/03/2021 21:03

'Think of her in bed
Lying there just watching telly
Then think of me instead'

''l'll never grow so old and flabby
That could never be'

'She's a PhD in "I told you so"
You've a knighthood in "I'm not listening'

Urgh it's just a whole song of shittiness! Gave myself the hump now Grin

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 20/03/2021 21:03

That's Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. Reilly. Used to get sung load when I was a karaoke host. I love I've Never Been To Me - yes, the lyrics are dodgy now, but the song was released in 1982 - it was of its time. I think 'Fix You' is actually quite sweet - Chris Martin wrote it for Gwyneth when she was totally grief stricken after her father died.

Ah yes good one. And yet that was from "my time" and has a catchy tune. I think even when I was young "young girl" was considered a bit creepy. Thought they did use it on a drink drive ad when I was a teen. Maybe they now need to use it on a consent/respect advert.

Haper Valley PTA by Jeannie C Riley. There was a tv series based on that song!
Serenster · 20/03/2021 21:06

Grr, Harper Valley

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:06

They used in the summertime on a drink drive ad. Not young girl, that would be very odd.
