Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

IDK if anyone's posted this, but lesbian version of Jolene. Grin I like it.

MissBarbary · 23/03/2021 01:13

There's a YouTube cottage industry in Jolene re-writes !

This is Dolly at Glastonbury including rather nice footage of the security team joining in.

MissBarbary · 23/03/2021 01:50

I had no idea it was about a real person, I just thought it was a series of misogynistic caricatures of what he thought goes on in our silly little heads

Even if you didn't know it was about a real trans woman it seems obvious to me that it's a very sympathetic song about someone not in a good place.

CornishPastyDownUnder · 23/03/2021 02:02

I got into rap in the late 80's-know most of the words by heart and love it all lol but some standout lyrics are: Flavor Flav&Cube-im only out for 1thang(borderline comedy lyrics : )
IceCube-Look who's burnin'(good STD message tho).
Pretty much heaps of old school rap tho feel I can barely write this for being disloyal what I was raised on and the tunes/lyrics slay..the days when BigT&A bikini/hot tub vids were the go..
ODB-plenty(but damn he was up there with the best)
Notorius B.I.G hypnotise.
OPP-yep not a good look from either side of the fence.
Ludacris/DMX/Mystikal..heaps..but not shy in sayin it like it is for objectifying guys and girls so im on fence here-
R.Kelly(scuse me while i throw up)

Shout out to the ladies:
Khia-my neck, my back
Nicki
Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi,
Saweetie &Doja Cat-love Best Friend lyrics

justilou1 · 23/03/2021 02:29

I always thought Candy was about Cocaine....

justilou1 · 23/03/2021 02:36

@MissBarbary - nobody told the Countess to forgive her husband. She chose to, and she made it conditional that he had to keep his dick to himself. She had made a point to him that she had engineered the whole thing along with Susanna to show him for the old fool he was, and reminded him that once she had been lusted after also. (And that she was not that old, not stupid, unobservant, or entirely subservient.). Also, he'd made such a total fool of himself, nobody'd be interested in fooling around with the old fart after this humiliating display he'd made of himself in public anyway.

MissBarbary · 23/03/2021 08:43

MissBarbary- nobody told the Countess to forgive her husband

My point which you seem to have missed is on here she would have been told to leave him.

theThreeofWeevils · 23/03/2021 09:33

LTC? Grin

justilou1 · 23/03/2021 09:53

PMSL @theThreeofWeevils 😂

MerylStropp · 23/03/2021 10:18

Haven't RTFT, but has anyone mentioned Babooshka by Kate Bush? About an older woman who sets a trap for her (presumably inattentive) husband, and he falls for it hook, line and sinker! A bit like a more sinister version of the Pina Colada song! The lyrics give the impression that the relationship has broken down over the years and she feels really bitter about it. Not sure if it qualifies as a feminist song, but the character in it certainly isn't taking any crap!

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 11:32

I love her in the video with massive sword and terrifying stare looking like she means business Grin

Defaultname · 23/03/2021 12:24

I've never heard the song, but thought that Babooshka was about a doll.

Before Max Bygraves recorded it, when it was performed at the Theatre Workshop, 'Fings Ain't What They Used T'Be' had different lyrics:
edited by MNHQ at OP's request

"In 1959 a new song appeared called Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be. It came from a new production of the same name that debuted in Stratford, East London, and was written by a talented composer and lyricist called Lionel Bart. The combination of the words and music of that song was tuneful, witty, hard hitting – and is now almost completely forgotten. One could also argue that they were in extremely bad taste.
The production was quite a success in its day and it transferred to a run at the Garrick Theatre. Amongst the performers were a young, but already well established, Barbara Windsor and a, then comparatively unknown,
....The fact that this was in a jolly song was probably intended by Lionel Bart to really make it hit home all the more. Bart came from the East End and probably would have been aware of the realities of the day."

I'm sure I had a recording of the original song by Sid James.

Defaultname · 23/03/2021 12:26

Thay should read " then comparatively unknown, Yootha Joyce "

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 23/03/2021 12:27

I think I heard Kate b saying she just liked the word Baboushka but didn't know it's Russian meaning ( I thought it was a granny figure?)

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 23/03/2021 12:28

..its Russian meaning..

justilou1 · 23/03/2021 12:30

Babooshka means old lady or grandmother. The dolls are called Matryoshka dolls.

SapatSea · 23/03/2021 12:35

For all those commenting how great Dolly parton is, have they forgotten the comedy musical "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" 'cos prostitution is such fun!Hmm

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/03/2021 17:42

I’ve also not forgotten her altruism, her giving to literacy charities, money for covid vaccine research, other individual acts of giving to the impoverished

So actually in terms of being decent, Dolly is v commendable

Miaowse · 23/03/2021 17:47

Yes, I also read that Kate Bush didn’t know the meaning of the word but had a friend with a cat called babooshka. I love that song so much.

Floisme · 23/03/2021 17:58

@justilou1

I always thought Candy was about Cocaine....
I thought Heroin.

To be fair, I thought most Velvet Underground songs were about Heroin.

I'm fairly sure Patti Smith wrote 'Because the Night' with Bruce Springsteen.

powershowerforanhour · 23/03/2021 22:42

The Beautiful South- don't marry her.
I hate it so much!

They redeemed themselves with "A Little Time"

Quaagars · 24/03/2021 01:37

Not RTFT, so probably already been mentioned
Tammy Wynette, Stand By Your Man.
"Cause after all, he's just a man" - forgive him,
Get to fuck lol, have some respect for yourself Grin

langclegflavoredbananamush · 24/03/2021 02:54

Eagles mentioned upthread, remember hearing "One of These Nights" (didn't realize it was the Eagles) a lot when it was charting and being especially grossed out by this bit

I've been searching for the daughter of the devil himself
I've been searching for an angel in white
I've been waiting for a woman who's a little of both
And I can feel her but she's nowhere in sight

and wondering what the hell do men expect/want from women?
and the "coming right behind ya, swear I'm gonna find ya"
creepy

justilou1 · 24/03/2021 04:07

Eric Clapton, You creepy old fart “Lay Down Sally”

There is nothing that is wrong
In wanting you to stay here with me
I know you've got somewhere to go
But won't you make yourself at home and stay with me?
And don't you ever leave
Lay down, Sally, and rest here in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you
Sun ain't nearly on the rise
We still got the moon and stars above
Underneath the velvet skies, love is all that matters
Won't you stay with me? Don't you ever leave
Lay down, Sally, and rest here in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, and no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you
I long to see the morning light
Color in your face so dreamily
So don't you go and say goodbye
You can lay your worries down and stay with me
And don't you ever leave
Lay down, Sally, and rest here in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, there's no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you
Lay down, Sally, and rest here in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, there's no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you

CuriousaboutSamphire · 24/03/2021 08:15

That was written by Marcella Detroit, Shakespeares Sister etc.
