Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

Song not doing...
I'm giving up now.

Horizons83 · 20/03/2021 22:48

Has ‘Thank heaven for little girls’ been mentioned yet?

Angry
thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 22:49

Here it goes
that well known very distinctive quirky Beatles song of 60s

Crabalocker fishwife poronographic priestess
Boy,you've been a naughty girl,
You let your knockers down
etc

PoleToPole · 20/03/2021 22:49

Yes definitely @changingnames786 I live in the US, and her music seems to very accurately reflect life here, especially small town life.

ArabellaScott · 20/03/2021 22:49

@ValancyRedfern

'He Hit Me and it Felt like a kiss' has to be up there.
Oh, for sure.

Also that Florence and the Machine 'Kiss with a fist'

hansgrueber · 20/03/2021 22:50

'You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, four hundred children and a crop in the field'

which is how someone I knew used to think it went, rather than 4 hungry children

MerylStropp · 20/03/2021 22:50

When you're in love with a beautiful woman
You watch your friends... cos you're a jealous and controlling git

If she doesn't come baaaaack...
I'll be your substitute, whenever you need me... Hmm

I wanna be Bobby's girl and if I was Bobby's girl
What a faithful, thankful girl I'd be! 🤮

Zig4zag · 20/03/2021 22:52

Hate Beyonce single ladies. If you like it you should put a ring on it??? I am neither cattle or a slave. You cannot claim me with a ring.

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 22:52

The Beatles song "Paperback writer"

Its a dirty story of a dirty man,and his clinging wife, doesn't understand ,
His son is working for Daily Mail,
Its a steady job,
but he wants to be a paperback writer etc

hansgrueber · 20/03/2021 22:53

Or the Gary Puckett song Young Girl!
SoulofanAggron · 20/03/2021 22:53

I was a massive Prodigy fan as a young teen - Smack My Bitch Up has nothing to do with violence at all, it's about heroin and getting injected

I think maybe it's a play on the ambiguity of the phrase, as apparently there are some implications of violence in the video?

It was well known that Every Breath You Take was written about a stalker - why you'd want to write a song about that is a bit Confused

And 'Don't stand so close to me' is about a teacher who fancies a pupil. I wonder if stuff will come out about Sting- but a lot of music is deliberately controversial I guess.

Ohhh I just remembered the least feminist song ever (maybe?) 'He Hit Me and it Felt Like a Kiss.' Envy

Four hundred children and a CROC in the field, surely?
MirandaWestsNewBFF · 20/03/2021 22:53

Dark Horse, which I really like apart from Juicy J’s rap over the top where he threatens to put Katy Perry in a coma.

Not on.

Catabogus · 20/03/2021 22:55

@RaindropsSplashRainbows

The transvision Vamp doing is great because...she doesn't care!
Yes exactly! She doesn’t say she doesn’t mind (wet, subservient) - she says she doesn’t care!
hansgrueber · 20/03/2021 22:55

[Chorus]
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

[Verse 1]
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth

etc

piperatthegates · 20/03/2021 22:56

I know him so well from Chess

Wasn't he good oh so good, wasn't he fine oh so fine,
Isn't it madness he won't be mine
But in the end he needs a little bit more than me (more security)
He needs his fantasy and freedom
I know him so well.
It took time to understand him
I know him so well
Wife and ow in competition

MimiDaisy11 · 20/03/2021 22:56

Where Have All The Cowboys gone? / Paula Cole

With such lines as:
"I'll wash the dishes while you go have a beer" amongst others.

piperatthegates · 20/03/2021 22:58

I know the lyrics of Substitute are not great but I loved the song when I was young.

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 22:59

@StealthPolarBear

I liked your comment about Kd Lang "Cravings " song 😁

VienneseWhirligig · 20/03/2021 23:01

@MimiDaisy11 I quite like that one. It's a tale of gradual disillusionment from enthusiastically becoming a housewife with a fine, productive husband, to realising she's doing the drudge work while he pisses away the family money down the pub.

BurbageBrook · 20/03/2021 23:02

Have to agree with PP I don't personally find Jolene particularly anti-feminist, instead I find it to be a song about naked vulnerability and insecurity. And yes she might be with a dickhead guy she feels will leave her for Jolene, and maybe HE'S sexist, but I don't find talking to Jolene asking her not to 'take her man' antifeminist as such.

Agree there are so many sexist songs out there though!

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/03/2021 23:04

Dont know if this has been mentioned but Diane is a response to Jolene. It very much slates the man involved. Not a brilliant song tbh but interesting to listen to.

@MimiDaisy11 I have always thought that that song was about a woman who marries in love and hope and then finds that she is washing the dishes while he goes to the bar with his mate. Its the story of a womans life gradually being turned into a life of drudgery and being taken for granted while he carries on doing what he wants. I may be over thinking it but I always assumed the Cowboy she was referring to was the wonderful man she fell in love with, not the selfish git she is married to.

SirSamuelVimes · 20/03/2021 23:07
I admit I wasn’t a great fan of “Jolene” when it was first released, but I discovered this enchanting medieval interpretation of it on YouTube a few weeks ago, and haven’t stopped playing it since. This is “bardcore”, and I love it!
Ah I was looking through the thread to see if anyone had put this on yet, I love it! Grin

Happinessisawarmcervix · 20/03/2021 23:08

“I’m gonna keep on loving you” - is it REO Speedwagon?

No you’re fucking not, mate.

MargotMoon · 20/03/2021 23:09

Haven't RTFT so apols if someone has already posted this, but if you love Jolene and think it's anti-feminist, you will very much enjoy listening to this podcast and hearing Dolly's thoughts:
