Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

In my opinion this is a modern Jolene- also references the song. It's ambiguous whether it's feminist/ anti-feminist in the same way Jolene is.

Either way, it's sooooo catchy

@VienneseWhirligig

Isn't the Housemartins one a sarcastic take on sexist wankers in the City? ("I think I might be happy if I wasn't out with them"?)
Yes, this. I love that song.

Babybirds "you're gorgeous" always seemed distasteful to me

Pretty sure that's about exploitation. So it's a feminist song for me. Anyone else agree with me?

Definitely. It's all written from the woman's perspective.

Remember that tanktop you bought me
You wrote "you're gorgeous" on it
You took me to your rented motor car
And filmed me on the bonnet
You got me to hitch my knees up
And pulled my legs apart
You took an instamatic camera
And pulled my sleeves around my heart

The Beautiful South- don't marry her.
I hate it so much!

But they also wrote the brilliant 'A Little Time' so I'll forgive them. They (like Dolly) write songs that tell stories about the relationships between men and women, and the most interesting stories are often about bad relationships. I find 'Don't Marry Her' much less problematic because you can't escape what the character is saying, no-one would listen to that and think 'oh what a lovely sentiment' whereas Bryan Adams 'Run to You' is about a similar relationship but makes it seem more 'romantic'. In fact my vote is for 'Run to You'.

Rupertbeartrousers

It's actually quite sweet. It's about a man who has lost his wife of 50 years, and he'd do anything to have gone with her. "Up high or down low, I'll go wherever you will go" is basically, I don't care if it's heaven or hell as long as I'm with you.

Back For Good by Take That has always annoyed me..

“Whatever I said
Whatever I did, I didn't mean it
I just want you back for good”

So you don’t actually know what you’ve done wrong? You’ve put no thought into why your partner is upset?

And then the final line:

“I guess that now it's time
That you came back for good”

Alright love you’ve had your little strop...time to get over it. I’ve decided I will take you back now.

Hmm
changingnames786 · 20/03/2021 22:38

@Mamanyt again, exhibit A: Kacey Musgraves!

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 20/03/2021 22:38

Just be good to me was originally by The SOS Band.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 20/03/2021 22:39

Hit me baby one more time, not DV reference. Hit me,as in boom!yea do that

VenusTiger · 20/03/2021 22:39

I was a massive Prodigy fan as a young teen - Smack My Bitch Up has nothing to do with violence at all, it's about heroin and getting injected - to be honest, I didn't really think much about lyrics as a kid, but if lyrics don't make sense or are plain dumb, I don't care who sings it and whether the melody is catchy, I'll just not listen to it.
It was well known that Every Breath You Take was written about a stalker - why you'd want to write a song about that is a bit Hmm.

Jolene is an amazing song about strength and compassion (to me anyway) and DP is just utterly fab.

Florence and the Machines, ‘a kiss with a fist is better than none.’

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 22:41

I really like Andy Williams Song

"Girls Song "
60s

Its not a politicaly Correct song at all !

But I like this song lots

Its only Andy Williams song that's Hip,

Who knew Andy Williams could do Hip stuff !

This song reminds me of Carry on type of seaside post cards humour. !

This Andy Williams song
Its called "Girl Talk"

Anybody rember it?
Was it a popular song back in the 60s

PoleToPole · 20/03/2021 22:41

Yes I have thanks @changingnames786 she`s one of my favourite country artists, I love "Biscuits" and "Follow Your Arrow". I also love Ashley McBryde, especially Martha Devine. Jon Pardi seems to be another who manages to avoid the creepy.

VienneseWhirligig · 20/03/2021 22:42

@Horizons83 and the skanky twat hasn't even washed up the mugs! Either she's been gone a couple of hours and he's thinking oh shit, better beg, or she's been gone for ages and he hasn't realised she left because he's a lazy knob.

hansgrueber · 20/03/2021 22:43

@RaindropsSplashRainbows

"You say it best , when you day nothing at all.." not sure if that's the title but I loathe that song.
A motto that many people should adopt!
Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/03/2021 22:43

Wait, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” by Transvision Vamp?!

I love that song!

changingnames786 · 20/03/2021 22:43

@PoleToPole yes love Follow Your Arrow. I think her Golden Hour album is just about the best album I've ever listened too, there are so few albums these days I will listen from start to finish repeatedly.

Ah, but it’s amazing when Tim plays it to Marsha from a tank in Spaced.
Horizons83 · 20/03/2021 22:45

Ha ha @VienneseWhirligig so true!

changingnames786 · 20/03/2021 22:45

Plus I love the fact KM has a reputation for being a bit of an arse sometimes, she strikes me as someone who doesn't take shit from people and has the confidence to take care of herself.

hansgrueber · 20/03/2021 22:46

Don't know if it's on here but 'If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?', although to be honest it could be sung by a woman too!

ValancyRedfern · 20/03/2021 22:47

'He Hit Me and it Felt like a kiss' has to be up there.

day101 · 20/03/2021 22:47

Girl, you'll be a woman soon.

Creepy but I love it

Spidder · 20/03/2021 22:47

I lived with an alcoholic once. Wonderful tonight makes me really pissed off. They go out, he gets pissed, then she has to look after him when they get in.

Ninkanink · 20/03/2021 22:47

Dolly was a young woman when she wrote that song. It’s not a young vs. older thing.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 20/03/2021 22:48

The transvision Vamp doing is great because...she doesn't care!
