Superstraight is trending on twitter. No I hadn't either.

Its a subcategory of straight that means that straight people can now be included in the lgbtqi+ categories. Or something. Hooray! Fight for my superstraight rights too Stonewall!. Or something

If your academic enquiry demonstrates that a particularly sexuality is partly or wholly socially formed, that does not (or should not) equate to a value judgement on those who have it, or imply that anything must be done about it.

Okay, so if academic enquiry discovers that the growth of porn has caused many men to only be attracted thin white blonde women half their age with huge breast implants we should merely shrug that off as socially interesting? There should be no value judgement made and certainly nothing should be done about it in case men are triggered by criticism of their sexuality?

Datun · 07/03/2021 14:15

@Sophoclesthefox

And of course, no analysis of gender, sex and sexuality would be complete without a quick round of Pin the Nazis on the Feminists.

Next up, Bobbing for Witches!

It's hilarious.

The absolute incandescent rage that people are defining a sexuality completely teflon to linguistic coercion.

Despite attempts that it's all the fault of women, all the fault of Nazis, all the fault of the far right, feminists, or society in general, and indeed, anyone else who can be invoked in a desperate attempt to shut it down.

Toooo late.

Surely it is freedom just as the freedom afforded call groups.

Well, thats what we have to do in some cases...

This nails it for me “ As the lad said he is not attracted to transwomen because they aren't female not because they are" trans” from @WanderinWomb*. I’m very sorry to hear he and his family have received abuse as a result. But my god, the message was needed.

MarieFromStTropez · 07/03/2021 14:23

I keep seeing TRA’s posting the hashtag #supertrans. But by definition, does that not mean trans people who are only attracted to other trans people?

Soubriquet · 07/03/2021 14:26

Yep!

Bet they aren’t though

nauticant · 07/03/2021 14:26

Just in case anyone is worried about the claim that the #superstraight hashtag and the support for it was somehow the doing of 4Chan, fear not, things kicked off on tiktok and then twitter in February and the claims about 4Chan relate to screenshots dated 6 and 7 March.

Obviously since that's clear, no one on here would now persist in those claims about 4Chan because that would be mendacious.

SomethingWitchy · 07/03/2021 14:27

jj Of course nothing "should be done about it" in those circumstances, no. By whom? Why?

If that were the only effect of porn, the only effect it would be having is on the men who choose to use it in constraining their dating pool in real life. Why would that be "criticised"? What business would it be of anyone else?

It would be information that could be shared in order for people to decide whether or not they wish to start using, or continue to use porn because it would give them a greater understanding at the outset of the likely outcome.

Porn has its own issues, of course - top of the list being concerns around coerced consent of performers and coerced consent of people in real life pressured or coerced into moulding their own "vanilla" sexuality to fit someone else's idea of what it should be - but that rather supports my point, not yours.

It means they are sexually attracted, based on sex.

Which, given that it's the opposite of trans, also means they are confused.

nauticant · 07/03/2021 14:32

#supertrans can't be equated to #superstraight because the first is an identity, ie how one perceives oneself, and the second as a sexual orientation, which others one is attracted to.

One focused inwardly, the other focused outwardly. It's why when you try to work out the parallels it turns into confusion.

AlwaysLatte · 07/03/2021 14:33

Not another label!

HPFA · 07/03/2021 14:33

Of course it might be an idea to consider if it's a good idea to allow alt-right people to use this as a wedge issue. Maybe if "No Debate" hadn't been a thing then these debates could be had in more left-leaning spaces.

"We've called a substantial section of left-wing women transphobes and bigots because they were worried about the way changing the definition of woman would affect them. Now we find right-wingers are using that against the left. Why? Why?"

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/03/2021 14:33

What could or should be done about people not being attracted to people because their sex doesn't align with their sexual orientation, do you propose?

WoolOfBat · 07/03/2021 14:33

Are we just being told that creepy middle aged men prefer young blonde women with big breasts?

I am shocked Shock. I genuinely thought that middle aged creepy men fancied middle aged frumpy women with comfortable shoes (like me).

If this is true, I feel really invalidated. Oh wise women, hypothetically (since I am married) should I buy them a drink and explain to them that their sexual preferences really comes from patriarchal porn? And that not fancying me is really bigoted? Would that mean that they would take me out for a date?

Deliriumoftheendless · 07/03/2021 14:34

I love supertrans- best character in Peep Show.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/03/2021 14:36

Yes. But anime loving teenagers on Twitter often don't care if things make sense. Nothing about their ideology makes much sense. It's just a hijack attempt, and they'll claim that they "won". Twitter is not a place for reason and critical thinking.

Never fear, jj thinks Things Can Be Done.

No. You should (hypothetically) explain to them that if you identify as a young blonde woman with big breasts, then to even consider seeing you in any other way is really bigoted.

titchy · 07/03/2021 14:39

Dear god of course not. Do you not understand the role of academic enquiry at all? FFS it's like talking to toddlers. Or is that ageist?

And what was the relevance of some US state law? Confused You do realise we're mostly in the UK here?

nauticant · 07/03/2021 14:40

I'm relaxed about anime-loving teenagers on twitter adopting #supertrans. I'd be interested to hear what they say it means, and whether what they say is meaningful in any real sense.

SomethingWitchy · 07/03/2021 14:44

Incidentally (again), I choose not to date people who use porn, which in itself constrains my dating pool quite a lot.

I freely acknowledge that's not an inbuilt sexuality I was born with, but I have learnt over the years that it find it a right turn-off.

I assume you don't think anything "should be done" about my sexual choices in that regard?

MaudTheInvincible · 07/03/2021 14:45

WoolOfBat The OLD threads on here are positively awash with comments about how all the middle-aged men consistently set their preferences for women who are the same age as them and definitely not 10-20 years younger. Well known phenomenon that.

Datun · 07/03/2021 14:45

@nauticant

Me too. We're always being told it's not a sexual orientation.

And no, it doesn't have anything to do with it.

A super straight woman would include transwomen in their dating pool, based on sex.

MaudTheInvincible · 07/03/2021 14:49

If a feminist only includes females in her activism is she a superfeminist?
