What's wrong with 'Cisgender'

ASugar · 04/03/2021 15:49

As someone who identifies as a cisgender woman and works in sexual health, I am honestly confused as to why so many females (sex term) who identify with being women (gender term) dislike the term Cisgender?

Now I'm not here to tell you what to say, I am genuinely curious.

However, here is my opinion for those who may be interested.

Cisgender just means you are not transgender. That your sex links you your gender and you assign any gender terms (ie. Pronouns, Gender identity, sometimes gender expression but not always, etc). I personally don't like to think that just because I was born with a vagina means I am a woman because I know many men with vaginas and women with penises. Additionally those who don't have a gender identity, then that would mean you wouldn't use women and men as they're gender terms (according to medical professionals). It would make you non binary or agender.

I understand that the term 'Cis' has been used to insult others which for that I am sorry.
My view is that if you can't allow trans women to be accepted in society and identified as women (without the need for 'trans' infront of it constantly) then we should be using cisgender. It is a medical term that professionals such as the NHS recognize. But I understand that is just my opinion.

I probably won't be commenting as I can imagine this will be filled with comments and I don't want to disrespect anyone's views. Just a cisgender woman who wants to understand more...

And as always I would appreciate if you respect my view as I'm going to be respecting all of yours.

Bless her, she really wanted the activist circles to notice too.

OMG. I tried to read all this but the word salad has fried my brain. And answering people's carefully argued comments with "correct" or "incorrect" is so unbelievably patronising. I cannot understand how there can be so little critical thought. And for the love of god DEFINE YOUR TERMS. Arggggh.

They scrape the barrel so much they'll probably write a crappy fake news article about it. "Cis woman trans ally devastates Mumsnet".

I do not ‘identify’ as a woman because in the language I know that would make it seem as though I were making a conscious choice to depart from some other identity. I am a woman as I was born a female.

For me ‘Cis woman’ makes a nonsensical pairing with ‘trans’ when they are not interdependent. I am a woman. Someone else may or may not choose to be a trans woman.

Do people talk about cis men? I am not sure.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 04/03/2021 22:11

I like this video by king critical about "cis", it's a reply to a jammidodger video. It covers quite a lot of the pros and cons of cis.

Ineedcoffee2021 · 04/03/2021 22:11

@sofakingg00d

I am a woman.

I am not a subset of woman.

I do not have a gender and find it absolutely fascinating that to misgender a trans person is "literal violence" but to misgender me is absolutely fine. It's just unbelievably hypocritical for you to come on here and tell women what they should call themselves. I'll decide that for myself thanks.

“Why are we talking about women all the time on here when we should be outing non-vegans? We could call them cis-omnivores.”

I have not laughed so much in a long time😂

Justhadathought · 04/03/2021 22:16

One of the best things about threads such as this is that they give people a space to refine and articulate their thoughts, observations and impressions. Which is useful, because you do need to be able to articulate to those as yet unaware and unconscious.

It is only through removal of posts that you gradually come to learn what exactly is 'permitted' speech, and what is not, which can be very disconcerting and often quite disturbing.......but it is all grist to the mill, and doesn't change the truth that you speak.

Delphinium20 · 04/03/2021 22:19

@7catsandcounting

How come we've all managed so far without doing it? Is the idea that transwomen will be called transwomen and women will be called ciswomen? How are transwomen better off? The difference is just as obvious, isn't it? I'm a vegan. Should I demand the 95% of the population who aren't to refer to themselves as non-vegan and start playing up if they don't want that label? Does it change anything for me if the non-vegans simply don't label themselves? Do I feel disrespected? How do you think that'd go down if everyone had to identity as non-vegan. I "feel" more vegan than "womanly". I just AM a woman, being vegan is actually a bigger part of my identity that my clothes, underwear, lipstick, head-tilting, tampon-wearing or whatever it is being a woman is supposed to feel like... because it représents a choice I've made, my moral code... and I have to think about it three times a day. I demand you ALL call yourselves non-vegans. And make sure it's clear on your email signatures. And I want tick boxes on all official forms. And it should be made clear on your passports. Why is it such a problem? It's just the opposite of vegan. And it makes sense. It makes vegans feel more included. I can't tell by looking at someone who's vegan and who's not. Why are we talking about women all the time on here when we should be outing non-vegans? We could call them cis-omnivores.
Right on.
JaneJeffer · 04/03/2021 22:19

It's a load of made up shite. Put that in your Twitter.

Indeed I will start addressing the meat eaters in my life as cis-omnivores forthwith.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, judges are asking what does it mean for a man 'to live as a woman' and are you actually saying you don't any figures for GRC prisoners?

Strikemepink · 04/03/2021 22:33

This thread is a cisaster.

Yes, indeed. Important to keep reminding ourselves what all these threads have been intended to distract us from over the last couple of days.

I just went over to Anxiety Sugar's twitter (as AS encouraged us to do) and - as many of you said - this was not a good faith post.

It did make me laugh, though, as one of AS's posts was this:

Gay and lesbian people shouldn't be told that their attraction to the same sex is wrong

AS doesn't seem to realise that this could easily get them cancelled as an Evil Transphobe, because, as we have all been told a million times, exclusively same-sex attraction is transphobic.
