What's wrong with 'Cisgender'

ASugar · 04/03/2021 15:49

As someone who identifies as a cisgender woman and works in sexual health, I am honestly confused as to why so many females (sex term) who identify with being women (gender term) dislike the term Cisgender?

Now I'm not here to tell you what to say, I am genuinely curious.

However, here is my opinion for those who may be interested.

Cisgender just means you are not transgender. That your sex links you your gender and you assign any gender terms (ie. Pronouns, Gender identity, sometimes gender expression but not always, etc). I personally don't like to think that just because I was born with a vagina means I am a woman because I know many men with vaginas and women with penises. Additionally those who don't have a gender identity, then that would mean you wouldn't use women and men as they're gender terms (according to medical professionals). It would make you non binary or agender.

I understand that the term 'Cis' has been used to insult others which for that I am sorry.
My view is that if you can't allow trans women to be accepted in society and identified as women (without the need for 'trans' infront of it constantly) then we should be using cisgender. It is a medical term that professionals such as the NHS recognize. But I understand that is just my opinion.

I probably won't be commenting as I can imagine this will be filled with comments and I don't want to disrespect anyone's views. Just a cisgender woman who wants to understand more...

And as always I would appreciate if you respect my view as I'm going to be respecting all of yours.

I don't 'identify as a woman', I am an adult human female and therefore am a woman. I identify as me, not as a nonsense gender stereotype.
There is no need for a word to distinguish me from a biological male who 'feels like a woman' whatever that means.

Cokie3 · 04/03/2021 21:01

I got a 'Mumsnet Calling' email where they asked me to read their Mumsnet statement on moderation in particular with regard to trans rights link.

I'm not going to dignify their email with a response back. If I'm banned, well, it's been real.

“ Someone who uses she/her or she/they pronounce and identifies with being female or a woman.”

You don’t get to just make up your own individual definitions of words you know.

Well I mean, you can, but you can’t expect anyone else to understand you, let alone go along with your new personal definition.

BelleHathor · 04/03/2021 21:02

I always go back to what the comedian Dave Chappelle:
I support anyone’s right to be who they want to be. My question is: to what extent do I have to participate in your self-image?

This with bells on

She took a screenshot of one of my replies and posted it. I feel like a celebrity! Glad she kept it for posterity as it was deleted here

I'll have to take a look and see what you said 🤣 Great accolades indeed, an entry into the twitter terfy hall of fame.

Same as many others here, no gender identity for me, just sex. As others have also said, you have transwomen and women. An extra word for the women isn't necessary.

Personally, the cynic in me thinks all the cis rubbish is purely spite. Us women have to have a stupid word shoved in front of 'women' because transwomen have the word 'trans' in front of women and it's all sooooooo unfaaaaaair.

The further cynic in me thinks if this continues it won't be long before we come out the other end and we have 'women', and 'cis women'. Because all it ever seems to be is push push push, take take take. Take our spaces, take our refuges, take our groups, take our language, take our sports, take our awards, take our roles and when we have nothing left - take our word.

It will be a cold day in hell before I refer to myself, my daughter, or any other girl or woman as cis. Not happening. EVER.

I take it MN is absolutely fine with all this...

They deleted your long polite carefully written post. Damn. I need a list of banned words because I can't make heads nor tails of these rules.

Since OP has reported back on her experiment I expect the deletions will get worse and worse.

We have been called cis again and again by our new visitors today. And yet?

@prrtnyao
“ I actually think the OP is unstable. I wonder if this was all an attempt to piss people off on Mumsnet and see if they'd come over to twitter for the fight.”
Undoubtedly

minchinfin · 04/03/2021 21:23

@MNHQ do you feel a bit silly about your good faith position now that @ASugar / @AnxietySugar has reported back on twitter, complete with screenshots, gloating, half truths and lies - just like she and all of us said she would?

Stopsnowing · 04/03/2021 21:23

Why would I use a word to make clear I am not transgender?

Kettlingur · 04/03/2021 21:23

And here I thought OP was only joking about posting to create Twitter content. Or was it MNHQ who told me so..?

prrtnyao · 04/03/2021 21:24

Mumsnet have seemingly given up deleting posts. Good.

This.

I was born a female. Therefore I am a female. That is my biology.

Doesn't matter how I feel. That is it.

Datun · 04/03/2021 21:27

He has a cis hetrosexual girlfriend and she doesn't mind

The use of the word heterosexual here is not based on anything connected to equality law.

The actual law.

You have, in one stroke, put this person, and their partner, outside of the safeguarding designed to protect them.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/03/2021 21:28

Nah mate...

It was just a wee bit of sarcasm

Deffo posting in good faith and not intending to put anything on twitter

Nameitychangity · 04/03/2021 21:31

I am a biological adult woman. Just a woman.
And I don't need an extra word to play into someone else's ideology.

JaninaDuszejko · 04/03/2021 21:31

It's a badge of honour to get a post deleted surely? I had two deleted last weekend, I was ever so proud, it's like being MN royalty surely Grin.

Ninkanink · 04/03/2021 21:32

It is just too tedious.

So I think I might take another break.

I can do just as much good talking instead of typing on MN.

Anyone who thinks they can stop me talking has another think coming.

Let them play their meta game. It’s all meaningless white noise.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/03/2021 21:32

Nice that they decided the forum isnt transphobic though
