What's wrong with 'Cisgender'

ASugar · 04/03/2021 15:49

As someone who identifies as a cisgender woman and works in sexual health, I am honestly confused as to why so many females (sex term) who identify with being women (gender term) dislike the term Cisgender?

Now I'm not here to tell you what to say, I am genuinely curious.

However, here is my opinion for those who may be interested.

Cisgender just means you are not transgender. That your sex links you your gender and you assign any gender terms (ie. Pronouns, Gender identity, sometimes gender expression but not always, etc). I personally don't like to think that just because I was born with a vagina means I am a woman because I know many men with vaginas and women with penises. Additionally those who don't have a gender identity, then that would mean you wouldn't use women and men as they're gender terms (according to medical professionals). It would make you non binary or agender.

I understand that the term 'Cis' has been used to insult others which for that I am sorry.
My view is that if you can't allow trans women to be accepted in society and identified as women (without the need for 'trans' infront of it constantly) then we should be using cisgender. It is a medical term that professionals such as the NHS recognize. But I understand that is just my opinion.

I probably won't be commenting as I can imagine this will be filled with comments and I don't want to disrespect anyone's views. Just a cisgender woman who wants to understand more...

And as always I would appreciate if you respect my view as I'm going to be respecting all of yours.

So I'm done with this conversation because now people are attacking me and my family and I don't appreciate that. Thank you to those of you who have kept the conversation civil and discussed your views. I appreciate that 🤍

Op, if your sibling was born female, and identifies as male, ask yourself why? Are they gay, gender nonconforming, butch, a tomboy?

What part of the concept of 'male', are they identifying with?

I'm assuming they don't identify with things coded female?

Ask yourself why are those things coded as they are?

imhereforthesanity · 04/03/2021 20:04

my thoughts on this are, why do people need a word in front on their sex/gender, if it sits with how they were born and only mean that means they are not trans ! trans people have the word trans in front of their gender ie: transman, tranwomen, so other men and women, born men and women don't need the cis bit..... simples really !

prrtnyao · 04/03/2021 20:04

Yes @ASugar so you keep saying.

I don't give a fuck.

You're talking absolute bollocks and making up definitions as you go along. Have a flick through some Orwell and wake up to the importance of language and the meaning of words.

Mockolate · 04/03/2021 20:05

People repeatedly saying sister, and she, when OP has said their sibling is their trans brother - why?
I can see why they are reporting it.

He tried those things. He decided he wasn't those things. I'm not going to be involved with this conversation anymore now because people are insulting my family.

I'd love to see this twitter post.

God if this thread isn’t an example of why language is important, I don’t know what is.

I think all told the words that have different meanings are:
Woman
Female
Man
Male
Trans woman
Trans man
Cisgender
Gender identity
Gender expression
Femininity
Masculinity
Heterosexual
Homosexual

I’ve probably missed something.

Mockolate · 04/03/2021 20:08

Well, it's not like I go around in everyday life calling myself a c**s woman, or have people refer to me as one.
I've never been referred to as one in RL, I've always just been a woman.
I can see how it could be helpful from a medical point of view though.

Erkrie · 04/03/2021 20:08

People can determine their sexuality for themselves. Its not for you to determine.

That doesn't answer the question.

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/03/2021 20:08

ASugar no one has attacked you.

We used words correctly. Which you dont like as you have your own meaning you refuse to share, despite being asked countless times.

We could all make up our own meaning of words then claim to be victimised, offended and attacked when someone uses them, but that doesnt make it true.

crumpet · 04/03/2021 20:08

Its probably already been said but we already have words which distinguish between women and trans women. They are "Women" and "Trans women". Why on earth should we shift the language about to introduce a new word "cis"? the differences are already catered for in existing terminology.

^ exactly this.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 04/03/2021 20:09

@prrtnyao just self indulgent twaddle. No one has taken any notice

OwBist · 04/03/2021 20:09

Just a query..... Did your sibling happen to go to a single-sex boarding school, by any chance?

Claudia84 · 04/03/2021 20:09

OP I am accepting you are here in good faith but the problem is that most of us here are trying to have a discussion using words that mean something. It would really help us understand your perspective if you could provide some real definitions to what you are talking about. Then we could actually have a real discussion and learn from each other

Erkrie · 04/03/2021 20:10

Just realised how odd that looked pms 🤣 messages. Check those.

NoSquirrels · 04/03/2021 20:10

As a sexual health practitioner, I am always ensuring him and others that transgender people that I'm around take care of their sexual health. But you kinda have to treat it with caution, like someone who has been sexually assaulted may need extra assistance. That's the same for trans people because it can be incredibly difficult and painful to discuss their sex and their genitals.

Of course - and that’s fine and good to be sensitive. But some things are just what they are. Your sexed body is one of them. The insistence on everyone having a gender identity AND a gender expression is not conducive to the sort of accepting atmosphere trans people deserve. The push for everyone to agree words are meaningless (unless they mean exactly what the trans activists say they mean) is creating discord and division.

Affirming people’s gender identity over and above everything else, saying it is more valid in some ways because there has been a struggle to accept themselves - that’s where the issue is.

I’ll agree Trans Women Are Women/Trans Men Are Men if you like - but we both know they’re not. Because we know they’re Trans. Trans is the important part of the identity for most things that matter in terms of the ‘rights’ people (gender critical and trans) are fighting about.

Karwomannghia · 04/03/2021 20:10

Surely the term ‘ciswoman’ could also be felt as discriminatory? It still highlights that you are biologically female.
Why do we need to discriminate? Do we need to? I believe we do. So we can invent new labels but we all still know who is who because we need to.
Also interested in the legality of a transwoman calling herself a woman and taking a straight man by surprise?
