What's wrong with 'Cisgender'

ASugar · 04/03/2021 15:49

As someone who identifies as a cisgender woman and works in sexual health, I am honestly confused as to why so many females (sex term) who identify with being women (gender term) dislike the term Cisgender?

Now I'm not here to tell you what to say, I am genuinely curious.

However, here is my opinion for those who may be interested.

Cisgender just means you are not transgender. That your sex links you your gender and you assign any gender terms (ie. Pronouns, Gender identity, sometimes gender expression but not always, etc). I personally don't like to think that just because I was born with a vagina means I am a woman because I know many men with vaginas and women with penises. Additionally those who don't have a gender identity, then that would mean you wouldn't use women and men as they're gender terms (according to medical professionals). It would make you non binary or agender.

I understand that the term 'Cis' has been used to insult others which for that I am sorry.
My view is that if you can't allow trans women to be accepted in society and identified as women (without the need for 'trans' infront of it constantly) then we should be using cisgender. It is a medical term that professionals such as the NHS recognize. But I understand that is just my opinion.

I probably won't be commenting as I can imagine this will be filled with comments and I don't want to disrespect anyone's views. Just a cisgender woman who wants to understand more...

And as always I would appreciate if you respect my view as I'm going to be respecting all of yours.

Cis is misogynistic

It suggests that women identify into their own oppression. Like it’s a choice and they chose to be raped and harassed.

Cis is a label applied to other people without their consent by another group. There is no other situation where that would be okay. I don’t mind other people telling me their pronouns but why should they get to assume mine (and therefore make lots of misogynistic negative assumptions about me)?

ThreeB · 04/03/2021 18:34

I find cis offensive because it implies that I subscribe to the concept of a gender identity. Gender is not a belief that I share and it is no part of my identity. I fought for a long time not to be defined by supposed gender limitations and I'm damned if I'm going to start again now.

NoSquirrels · 04/03/2021 18:34

@NigellaSeed

Transgender people have the highest rate of being murdered. Being transgender is still not accepted in all corners of society - not even in Britain, being homosexual was illegal 50 years ago and still is in many parts of the world

I could go on

Yes white men have the most privalege. Yes FGM is an abomination. That doesn't mean that ciswomen don't have more privalege than others.

I think this thread is so toxic.

Interesting article here NigellaSeed

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Transgender people have the highest rate of being murdered.

Untrue. Actually, a murder victim in the U.K. is statistically more likely to have been killed by a trans person than to be one. These are small numbers we are dealing with.

2007-current

Murders by trans people - 13
Murdered trans people - 8

Aaah. Blissful facts.

It's almost as though starting these threads just constitutes a concerted effort for women to set out their logical, evidence-based, irrefutable, stall.

Inconvenient facts

GingeAndTonic · 04/03/2021 18:36

I am biologically a woman, and I just don't identify as CIS; the term is new, and while I understand how it is currently used, it doesn't have any meaning for me.

I respect a trans woman's right to exist, her right to self-determination, her right to be safe, her right to go about her day-to-day business without fear, or to access services, but I don't identify as CIS. Nor do I identify as trans or non-binary. I simply identify as a woman. I believe that I (or any other biological woman who identifies as such) should have the same right to identify as what I feel I am as any other group or gender, that this should have an equal weight, and I should not fear denigration for my concept of myself.

If your assertion about transgender murder rates is true, then that is horrible and is clearly being under reported in the media. Where is this information??
jellyfrizz · 04/03/2021 18:37

In sports they do. To name just one area.

jellyfrizz · 04/03/2021 18:37

Oops, don’t.

Why do I need to?
My gender is not part of my identity, it has no real meaning to me. I am a woman, that is all. It is offensive to call me something which is not part of my identity and is not observable
To call me something that distinguishes me as different to a trans woman has no relevance to, trans people have their own choices and labels, please respect mine.

BelleSausage · 04/03/2021 18:37

Have you tried typing cis into the search on Twitter? It is all sneering hate-filled bile directed at ‘cis’ women. It’s misogynistic abuse on steroids and it is never, ever deleted.

Erkrie · 04/03/2021 18:37

Ain't that the truth.

Gender and sex are not the same thing.
I think this is a post we can ALL agree with!
Normandy144 · 04/03/2021 18:38

I just want to be called a woman. I was born female and I identify as a woman. There's no need to put cis in front of it because woman works perfectly to describe what I am.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 04/03/2021 18:38

If gender and sex are not the same thing then isn't this whole debate meaningless?

If women are happy to say "I am a human adult female commonly known as woman" why the need for the qualifier "Cis" ?

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/03/2021 18:38

@ASugar

Gender and sex are not the same thing.
I think we can all agree on this one!

Woman means human adult female.
Thats sex.

Femininity means qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of women.
Thats gender.

Easy!

ASugar · 04/03/2021 18:38

@prrtnyao

Hold the phone

However if they want to refer to themselves as women without having to state they are trans women, they have the same right as we do to do so.

Then why should women accept the term "ciswoman" ?

I've not stated that they should. We only should if trans women are being forced to be referred to as trans women when they want to be identified as women. Then there wouldn't be a need for the word as much.

I don't believe in gender, it's a social construct, I am biologically a woman, therefore, I am a woman, no other label needed.
