Mumsnet says Trans Rights are Human Rights!

ool0n · 03/03/2021 14:39

I always assumed Mumsnet were not the biggest supporters of trans rights, given the stories about them. But this is a good statement on Twitter, "of course trans people exist, and of course trans rights are human rights"
twitter.com/MumsnetTowers/status/1367071394870276099

Also I thought using terms like cisgender or cis were against the rules, this isn't true either -

So can I get a trans rights are human rights, trans women are women, trans men are men and non binary people are valid!

Also the shadows under my fridge

Did I miss something? Or are we back with the Dr Who scenario?

Lepetitpiggy · 03/03/2021 17:47

@NellieEllie

“I did a diversity training course last week and questioned the use of the word cis saying I had only really seen it used in a quite negative way. The trainer said it was a totally valid, from -the- Latin term, so I am now confused about it”

This argument - that “Cis” is from the Latin, hence is fine and cannot be objected to, is superlatively stupid - I mean, do they not know how languages work?

I could probably put together a latin version of “idiotic tw*tface who looks like a donkey’s bum”, but I don’t see how that would legitimise its general use in society.

Hahahaha.

I mean.... I'm a woman so I guess it's my word too? And I'm very happy to apply it to trans woman.

Please remember, you don't speak for all women.

How could I forget? But since when can some women give away what belongs to all women?

Liquorishtoffee · 03/03/2021 17:48

I’m sure there’s a German word for the donkey bum face thing... they seem to have a word for everything

7Days · 03/03/2021 17:49

a woman is anyone who identifies as a woman

That's not a definition. Its circular.

Please explain a bit better than that.

Imagine, if you answered some questions properly you might win some converts!

Wait! Did you delete that message? I quoted it.. delete me too!

Though I have no idea why it was deleted. it was amusing and was not offensive about anyone, used no banned terms!

I have reported myself! Tis only fair!

BarbaraofKent · 03/03/2021 17:50

Whoever identifies as one, or grew into one from birth.

Whoever identifies as what, or grew into what?

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are not very good at this definitions thing.

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz

Barbara that tweet Grin
The 'relationship purposes' one?

Yes it's one of my all time favourites.

Ally in the tweets, TERF between the sheets indeed Grin

Sophoclesthefox · 03/03/2021 17:52

Ok, so what could the definition of the word “woman” that includes:

Me, a human natal female with no gender identity AND
Sarah, a human natal male who identifies as a woman BUT

Excludes my dear old dad.

AND doesn’t use circular logic such as “a woman is someone who identifies as a woman”.

Please, and thank you for the explanations, because dammit, manners matter Grin

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 03/03/2021 17:52

I am still so confused.

If the gender woman not is linked to a biological woman, I really want to know what it is.

And nobody will send me a link to this web page where I allegedly can get my gender assigned. This makes me sad.

HellonHeels · 03/03/2021 17:52

@ErrolTheDragon

Cisgender: 'a term for people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth.'

I don't have a 'gender identity', my sex was observed not 'assigned' at birth. So the term is simply inapplicable.
Some women may choose to use it but many don't.

I was challenged not to use the word woman, so I didn't!
CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/03/2021 17:53

@FelicityBeedle we're going to need some proof abot that last assertion.

Bear in mind we can use Google too!

Winesalot · 03/03/2021 17:53

I mean.... I'm a woman so I guess it's my word too? And I'm very happy to apply it to trans woman.

Even in women's sport?

Even in roles set aside for women to influence policy for other women?

Even when a gender balanced board is 75% males? Even when a panel meant to encourage females to address the imbalance of females in parliament has 2 out of 6 speakers being male?

In ALL instances?

langclegflavoredbananamush · 03/03/2021 17:54

Yes, this keeps coming up and keeps causing me grave alarm.

You can express your philosophy and describe how you relate to the world without retconning history or saying stuff like "well the Romans would have been very puzzled if you said you weren't cis" (that was off twitter- I sat staring at the screen in mute rage).

Go buy a gently used copy of the Cambridge Latin Course off Amazon, and don't pollute my eyes with it again.

CandyLeBonBon · 03/03/2021 17:54

Trans people are at more risk than women in toilet situations

Trans people AND WOMEN are more at risk of violence by men.

Fixed that for ya!!

MindYourLanguage · 03/03/2021 17:54

What on earth is identity? Could someone define that please Confused

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/03/2021 17:55

I was challenged not to use the word woman, so I didn't! Yeah! But you could have taken it seriously and actually privided a non circular definition!
