According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

Tune in live here at 2.30pm to see history in the making: www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/3ca1efa2-16a5-489d-a5a0-5d929bff81f6

Who is speaking now? What a good point about 'Lords'

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:24

@YourWurstNightmare

This is the longest I've ever watched Parliament tv.
Me too - I was planning a lovely furlough snooze (don't worry I was at work early) and I'm still wide awake - amazing isn't it!

@YourWurstNightmare

This is the longest I've ever watched Parliament tv.
Me too. It is usually either dull or painful Grin

These speeches are so amazing. i could almost cry.

It is interesting how not needing to appeal to an electorate liberates these politicians to vocalise common sense, rather then seeking to appeal to a noisy group of voters.

It's just fantastic.

Datun · 25/02/2021 16:25

Did lord hunt say he had received letters from women, in the hundreds, just this week?

Brilliant stuff, women.

I believe he also said that everyone in government has received these letters. For fuck's sake. Cowardly is exactly the right word. I'm so glad he named it.

UpDownQuark · 25/02/2021 16:25

in the face of things like 'Nature' giving a woke disclaimer every time sex is mentioned.

Please write to them and point out how unlikely that is to lead to lasting scientific clarity.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/02/2021 16:25

It feels like some of them waited just for this bill. Because the logic of it is so bloody obvious.

The wider issues being hung off it shows that many of them came to this with their own bugbear, ready to dust it off and get it heard.

Lord Winston's clarity, despite his initial overly polite misstep, is one example.

By the time they have finished with their "and another things" there won't be a bill that can be brought that can't be referred back to this if sex, gender language needs to be addressed.

Which means this could.be a bit of a red letter day!

Melroses · 25/02/2021 16:26

Lord Balfe - ouch!

Thingybob · 25/02/2021 16:26

Its wonderful to watch isn't it, how that original brave, lone voice (was it Lord Moonie?) has turned into such a flood of cross party voices.

Thank you Lords and thank you to all you amazing women.

WeAreJackieWeaver · 25/02/2021 16:26

Datun I think there were a couple of other Lods/Baronesses that said their inbox was full. Yay us!

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:26

Lord Balfe - this is a drafting mess - quite. Who did write this into the bill in the first place.
We must ensure we're not in this mess again.

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:27

"This is a drafting mess. The people who drafted this messed it up" - Lord Balfe (Conservative)

Yes.... trans activists have infiltrated every level of the civil service, and will be in the Parliamentary drafting office

MrsKoala · 25/02/2021 16:27

I also would like to send emails thanking people. Does anyone know if there is a list of the cross party members of the group lead by Baroness Noakes? - I too missed the beginning of all this.

persistentwoman · 25/02/2021 16:27

"Someone got the government into this mess...." said Lord Balfe. What a good point..... Eyes up all the Stonewall champion government departments...Hmm

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:28

If you are just tuning in, it is still going on. If you want to go back to the beginning, then scroll back to 2.30pm

Birthing person has got to be one of the most absurd things I’ve ever heard and I am a native English speaker.

Melroses · 25/02/2021 16:30

Lord Balfe and his mention of 'luxury beliefs' - this is so true and something I heard about round here.

Getting too far ahead of the ordinary people and what their needs are.

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:30

Thank you so much sunkisses - I didn't know this was on.

I agree. These aren't off the cuff comments based on thoughts formulated over the past few days. These are people who have been thinking deeply about these issues for some time and have collectively chosen to strike now.

How much of a role has Baroness Nicholson played in this, I wonder?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/02/2021 16:30

We're certainly gaining quite a few new sentences today. I may collate a few of them 😁

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:31

"My daughter who is about to give birth called this whole thing 'hilarious nonsense'" - Lord Balfe (Conservative)

Needmoresleep · 25/02/2021 16:31

From posts above it sounds as if Baroness Goudie was also supportive. If so useful as she is a major Labour Equalities person.

Drafting bills should not be left to civil servants. Whoa fabulous
