According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

@Sunkisses

Baroness Barker (Lib Dem) claims that women's rights arguements come from the "alt right" Hmm

This argument pisses me off. I'm am a lifelong leftie, but I do believe women's hard-won rights are being eroded and must be protected!

Lord Hunt mentioned the Minister (which one?) said there would be a review alongside the amendment. Does anyone know what he's talking about?

The beginning of the beginning. The claiming back is at the start - Lord McCormack, great

There was a women talking the other day on the radio about covid and maternity leave she said “for pregnant women... I mean pregnant people” the presenter didn’t say a word. This is what it’s come too people having to correct themselves.

I'm irritated with myself for a feeling of gratitude.

How on earth did social circumstances deteriorate to such a position where I'm grateful for this wholly rational crumb.

I cannot believe how erasing it is to correct from the word woman

It’s insane

Lord Winston reminds Baroness Barker that he is not a "bigot" for disagreeing with her. He reminds her that he was the first doctor in Europe to offer IVF for lesbian couples

It’s like the grown ups have finally entered the room. I never thought I would say that about the House of Lords.

Good. And yes to the PP who said most people don't even know this is happening.

We just have to make sure they do know.

Lord Winston, one of the foremost and respected reproductive doctors, reminds the House that humans have around 30 trillion cells in our bodies that originates at the moment of embyonic genesis, and they are all either XX or XY

Reminds the House that no one change sex!

Thank fuck for The House of Lords.

Lord Winston is really clear. Sex is bimodal in every possible iteration in humans, and supporting women in their pregnancies is utterly vital, and it's not bigoted to say so. (Interesting asides about the affect of hormones and conditions in the womb on sexuality, but obviously sexuality is different to what sex you are)

Lord Winston. His biggest issue has been this, correspondence was anonymous and the worst. Baroness Barker coming under criticism, but nicely. Words proper definitions not been used. Gender & sexuality Professor Roger Short seminal, research isn't a single issue XX or XY fundamental 3 days of fertilisation ova testis exceptional rare and have all been XX. Hormonal sex starts before birth, women have testosterone, Brain sex determined well before birth. They affect the development of a child - chest-feeding & breastfeeding very different. Need to debate these issues will need to come back to this at another date.

Environment (for women) challenged, need for praising maternity doing more especially disadvantaged

Bit disjointed - others have said, so pick the bones out

Baroness Barker denies any evidence to support Lord Winston's statement.

I'm joking — but we all know people such as her who cling to irrational, emotional, sentimental beliefs despite all the evidence to the contrary.

I agree cheese
I've often wondered what was the point of a bunch of unelected peers having a say in our laws etc. but now I see that they can consider and comment without fear of deselection or losing the public vote so they're free to challenge.

Baroness Nicholson pays tribute to the brilliant cross-party work that went into this victory for women's rights. She says this is only the beginning!

Baroness Noakes being thanked by the Baroness, designed to help one person only, now for all mothers. Now door opened to more debates. Large group working together + crossbenchers and growing everyday.

The beginning of clarifying legislation which has become rather muddled
