According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

As a lesbian also around in the old days, fighting against section 28 etc, I feel betrayed by the Barker person who seems to have her blinkers on, and definitely barking up the wrong tree. I still wonder about whether any of them know that transitioning often just seems to be about cutting or growing hair etc and the actual risks faced by many women in respect of men have been documented.

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/02/2021 16:09

If transwomen are women why are they called trans ?

Thanks OP

Joeblack066 · 25/02/2021 16:10

@AlfonsoTheTerrible

That is totally off-topic and a ill-disguised attempt to derail the thread, *@Joeblack066*
Off topic? How odd.

@Jacketpotato84

Ok i think i get it now, so if a woman changed her gender to a man then he should act like a man which would mean not becoming pregnant as a man as he cant have it both ways right?
We are told time and time again that we MUST alter our language so we don't trigger trans people's dysphoria. Indeed, one transman complained to Always that the woman symbol was triggering on their sanitary protection wrappers. So excuse me if I'm baffled that someone who rejects womanhood so much that they transition (and in McConnell's case get a GRC) and then do the most female act on earth...get pregnant. How does it work both ways?

@DreamEvenBigger

Who is speaking now (photo only)? What a strong statement to begin with (re breastfeeding)

Read the other posts to you Joe Don't derail a real time thread. Start a new one, we'll discuss your points, in depth.

highame · 25/02/2021 16:11

I like her, bet though that she's the wrong kind of BAMEGrin

BaronessWrongCrowd · 25/02/2021 16:12

@Joeblack066

We are discussing what is being said the HOL about the rights of women. This does not include transwomen. Please start your own thread to discuss your point.

One of the conditions of the granting of a GRC is that the person applying agrees to continue to live in their new gender for the rest of their lives. If men could get pregnant then there wouldn’t be a problem with trans men making this solemn promise would there?

However..........

Kit19 · 25/02/2021 16:13

@BuntingEllacott

Winston, and others like him, have spoken to find a middle point and been faced with the excitable claims of transactivists that such a middle point is literal violence, and has quite clearly shifted his position to a much clearer one, though no less well and politely expressed.

(I note we now have a poster flinging a 'women are going to get raped anyway' dead cat in. Not gonna dampen my sunshine, you charmer. This is a win. Take your misogyny that uses the ubiquitousness of rape as a lever to squash women down and stick it)

I think a lot of peers (and others - thinking of Ross Tucker for example) started from a position of 'we need to find a compromise, we must bekind' but a hail of 'you're denying our existence/you hateful bigot/die evil bitches' has made them pick a side (how mad it should be like this!) You cannot compromise on whether a man is a woman and what that leads too. L

Getting the light shining on the defunding of women only services too, this is wonderful!

DaVinyl · 25/02/2021 16:15

@Carefulvulvadriver

Re Claire Fox's speech: I had missed that awful news about the RISE refuge in Brighton losing funding as it is not male-inclusive. Is there a thread on it? Sounds like something we should do some digging for
@carefulvulvadriver There's a thread in feminist chat asking for support (petition signing) for this. They have almost reached their 25,000 sigs so any extra support would help. It's called 'domestic abuse charity loses funding' I think.
SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:15

Current speaker talking about sexuality with reference to trans - Lord Winston did this too.
What do they mean by sexuality? I thought it meant same sex (yes sex) attraction.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/02/2021 16:16

JoeBlack066 You were asking those questions of me - I'm busy just now, I am totally hooked listening to the speeches.

As PP suggested - start a new thread.

Or, read some of the threads that are here - you've not asked anything that hasn't been answered before. There are many resources here, much of it is really very helpful.

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:18

Sorry that wasn't quite right:

What do they mean by sexuality? I thought it meant same sex (yes sex) attraction.

I mean sexuality is about who you are attracted to not about identity.

Blackberrycream · 25/02/2021 16:20

This is really great news. Such a change from just a few months ago. It really feels like women are mobilising and finally being heard.

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:21

I’d like to send some thanks by email as I don’t do Twitter

Baroness Noakes
Baroness Nicholson
Lord Lucas
Lord Hunt

Are these the right names for key people?

I joined late and don’t want to get it wrong

highame · 25/02/2021 16:22

Lord Treisman - ONS inadequate data etc, not time to comment. Lovely

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:23

Gosh now talking about the language of the census -they must all read these boards!

YourWurstNightmare · 25/02/2021 16:23

This is the longest I've ever watched Parliament tv.

Jacketpotato84 · 25/02/2021 16:23

I implying my understanding of that it does not work both ways a woman cant just say hes now a man agree to live as a man and do a woman thing by getting pregnant. Its contadictory isnt it

NaughtyTortie · 25/02/2021 16:23

Lord Winston also and the DUP it is Lord Morrow?

Melroses · 25/02/2021 16:24

Oooh interesting - brought up the census, with little time to put it right.

There has been a huge overstep going on in the background somewhere.

FuzzyPuffling · 25/02/2021 16:24

Thank you for starting this thread OP. I didn't know this debate was happening today and I am so very happy at the raft of very sensible statements from various members of the HoL.

Very relieved indeed.
