Do any of you ever pause to think about the effect that your attitudes and posts have on the mental health and safety of trans men and women?
Yes I think about the mental health and safety of trans people. But mostly I think about the mental health and safety of my neuro diverse, gender non-conforming, gay children (teens and young adult).
Since this whole thing came to my attention I have been fearful that they would see trans ideology as a reason for and solution to some difficult problems they face.
Since they were quite young our conversations have gone like this with language changed according to age:
Gender is a social construct based on regressive stereotypes that harm women and men.
Liking football and short hair does not mean you are a boy.
Liking glitter and dance does not mean you are a girl.
You can like what you like, wear what you want and love who you love.
You cannot be born in the wrong body. You are perfect as you are.
As they have got a bit older we have talked about fertility, sexual functioning and health issues caused by trans treatments.
They will leave my care intact, fertile (as far as we know!) and able to experience sexual pleasure. Not goals I ever expected to explicitly have as a parent. After that it’s up to them of course but I hope the pendulum might have swung back to caution and avoiding harm.
Great thread. I work in healthcare and get besides myself seeing “People with a cervix should have a smear test,” when I frequently meet women who have very little knowledge of their own anatomy and then “Men should have prostate screening (and other people with a prostate).” Men stay men in the messaging with a caveat for trans people but women become people.
I also have women who have been abused pleading with me to ensure there will be no men in the room when they have an invasive procedure. So not just a female person performing the test but only female people in the room. Or they can’t have the test because they are already traumatised and it is too triggering for them.
It matters to their mental health and safety. So I think about that too.
